Guest guest
Teenager teams up with fellow musicians to raise money for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Posted December 26 2004 http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/palmbeach/ Club Ovation in Boynton Beach will become the site of " Rock Yer Bonez " punk rock band Tuesday in the name of charity. " We designate every Tuesday night for `Project Worthy Cause,' so charities can come in for fund-raisers. We're delighted to have `Rock Yer Bonez' and wish more charities would take advantage of our offer, " said Randy Grinter, owner/operator of Club Ovation. The popular nightspot can accommodate 2,000 people in two concert rooms. The club is donating the space, security personnel, bartenders, sound engineers and technicians for the benefit for the Arthritis Foundation. The concert is the brainchild of Steve s, 17, who has juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. s is a drummer with the band, Where is Monday. He wanted his band to perform at Club Ovation, but was told that unless he went through a promoter or put on a charity benefit, it was out of the question. So s, known to his peers as " Steve-O, " decided to take the suggestion to heart. Teaming up with Dorries, bassist for the band Ject, the two put together a lineup of eight area bands. " We're doing this from our hearts, because we know the money will help people. Most fund-raisers are for cancer; we wanted to do it for arthritis, " said s. Both s and Dorries have a vested interest in the project. Dorries' 21-year-old sister was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis at the age of 3, and s was diagnosed with the disease at age 2. He has limited mobility because of the rapid onset of the illness. Two years ago, he was in a wheelchair for almost a year as part of his rehab program following surgery on his hips. The pair hope to raise $5,000 for the Arthritis Foundation, which will support area programs and provide sponsorship for children with arthritis to attend Camp Funrise, a one-week residential camp for children with arthritis. The camp is affiliated with Miami Children's Hospital. " has been involved with us for many years. He wants to let people know that children get arthritis, too, and that it can be a very debilitating disease, " said Carmen Amodie of Wellington, regional vice president for the Arthritis Foundation of Florida, based in West Palm Beach. About 300,000 children across the country have juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Signs of the disease can show up in children as young as 18 months and can affect internal organs and joints, Amodie said. Other bands in the showcase are Hands Free Method of Boca Raton, Copasetic, Fall that Far of West Palm Beach, Sworn to Silence of Wellington, For the Taking and Drifter. A preview of the music is online at: purevolume.com/[name of the band]. CDs will be available for sale at the event. " We're very thankful to the businesses that have made donations to help make the event a success, especially Club Ovation, " said Gail s, 's mother, who is coordinating the fund-raiser. PK Graphics donated the artwork and fliers, and Sports Plus Tees made a " Rock Yer Bonez " T-shirt, available for $10. Bru's Room Sports Grill of Boynton Beach will sell food.
