The FDA just issued a warning on naprosyn about three hours ago. The NIH was

conducting a study with naprosyn and Celebrex and the effects with Alzheimer's

patients. The study just got cancelled because of an increased risk of heart

and cerebral problems. The FDA says that people should not exceed the

recommended doses of naprosyn or take it longer for ten days. n has been

taking it for five years, but she has developed chest pain this year that no one

can explain. (n, 15, systemic)

You can alternate an NSAID with Tylenol but you should never take more then 1

NSAID or you run a major risk for severe side effects.Another thing is each

NSAID is differant and each one takes a couple weeks to take full effect so if

you keep switching you'll get some pain relief but not the anti inflamitory

benefits.

Krystal was taking naproxen and Celebrex, alternating the naproxen with

ibuprophen. She too developed chest pains, but the cardio couldn't find

anything. He labeled it as anxiety, even though she wasn't undergoing anything

stress wise at the time.

My son has been on naproxen for the past 2.5 years.

I read the naproxen news as well - it looks like this study was

ongoing for 3 years and stopped after a number of people in the study

had heart-related problems/strokes.

I am not sure if there are any safer alternatives. What does your

doctor say? We've left a message for our doctor, but no news yet.

Raj, Our doctor said that the study was done on older patients, pretty much

what everyone else is saying. He said he had no problem changing n

though. I told him that we had issues with naprosyn even before the study.

n has been refusing to take it recently, for she said it does nothing.

He said we could try something else if we wanted. (n, 15,

Unfortunately she wasn't getting any of the anti inflammatory benefits--it has

been strictly to attempt to lessen pain. This was done under dr's watch. All

we've been able to do is attempt to deal with the pain, leaving it to the

rhuemetologist to deal with the inflammation. I personally haven't seen where

any of it is doing anything for the pain. She has bad and worse days, but

nothing that can be termed good days, which is what she had prior to taking

anything. This is why Monday can't come soon enough for us. Apparently there

is a shortage of Rhuemetologists which is why there was several months wait to

get in.
