Guest guest
Hunter is taking the daily folic acid, as well as multi- vitamin and iron supplement 2xdaily. I just have this gut feeling that something is wrong and the doctors have not found it yet. Sandi Ken Hunter (6 Systemic)
Guest guest
Sandi, What are the hematocrit numbers looking like?We were told those numbers were more important then the hemaglobin. Anemia is common with systemics and can be caused by several differant things.Sometimes it's not iron deficiancy but the disease itself and the meds. I hope things turn around quickly and get back to normal. Hugs Becki and 6 systemic
Guest guest
I am wondering if they checked her Ferritin level. When my daughter was younger she was anemic. We assumed she had iron deficinecy anemia, but when her ferritin count was checked, it was normal, despite the anemia. Hers turned out to be a hemolytic anemia. When they looked at slides of her RBCs you could see that the membranes were all destroyed. She was making the cells and destroying them. So for her more iron, vitamins, etc. would not have helped her anemia. I hope you get answers soon. She went from 9.9 on Hemoglobin to 9.1. We started her on a iron supplement last month. She did have a flare this month. The Rheumy stated " it isn't critical yet " - any advise or past experience with this from you all would be helpful. Guest guest
No - but come Monday I will be calling the doctor to have her seen by a hematologist I don't want to wait until it could become critical to find the exact cause of the anemia. This disease is so unpredictable. Thank you all for the advice. Happy New Year to all of you and your children. Guest guest
Sandi, Is Hunter getting a daily folic acid supplement? If not, please ask her docs about adding one. We found that was the key to keeping 's anemia controlled. Liz Concern about Anemia Hunter's lab revealed again this month that is she is getting more anemic. She went from 9.9 on Hemoglobin to 9.1. Guest guest
Good suggestion, Kim. When was sent to a hematologist all of that was done. Has Hunter's doc mentioned having her seen by a hematologist? Liz Re: Concern about Anemia I am wondering if they checked her Ferritin level. When my daughter was younger she was anemic. Guest guest
Sandi, I don't kknow exactly what hemoblobin has to do with anemia, but ferratin sure does. Has that been specifically checked? As I recall, there is a screening test for anemia, and then also a deeper more sensitive ferratin test. Also, the nature of the disease disallows absorption of iron, in general, which means that as much as you can supplement iron, the body won't absorb it. These are general things I've picked up and may or may not be 100% accurate. Double check with your rheumy. Guest guest
Sandi, Again on this anemia subject, Becki and I seem to be on the same page....I was just told at last appt. that our rheumy was impressed with the hematocrit number (of Hunter) as one of the key indicators of how well he was doing, and anemia, but wasn't quite sure about repeating it on the list because I haven't researched it....but it seems to be dittoed by Becki's comments--- >What are the hematocrit numbers looking like?We were told those >numbers were > more important then the hemaglobin. > Anemia is common with systemics and can be caused by several differant > things.Sometimes it's not iron deficiancy but the disease itself Stacia and Hunter 8 systemic, iritis
