I can't believe all that you had to go through. I am so glad my 3 had

the chicken pox years ago (at Christmas time!) before Chris' JRA

developed. I could not imagine having this worry on top of everything

else. Hugs to you and I hope things calm down for you so you can have a

OK, update time.

Bayly's half-brother does indeed have Chickenpox.

It is definitely a BIG RISK for Bayly. Life-threatening even.

It is also a risk if his baby sister Violet contracts this incredibly

contagious disease, as it will expose Bayly to it yet again, and his

immunity, as you know, is shot to pieces, so it's a struggle.

Could not for love nor money get onto a GP- too busy despite my mentions

of urgency! Got onto Bayly's local Specialist who wasn't overly

concerned, but planned to arrange an antibody shot for Bayly this

afternoon sometime. Finally got a call from the Rheumy in Sydney who

said the shot had to happen " sooner rather than later " , but the Mtx

wasn't a big issue, since Bayly's 'only 'on 10mg orally, once weekly. I

then had to get onto the Paediatric Registrar at our big hospital, who

consulted with Infectious Diseases, who said Bayly had to have the human

anti-body Zoster Immunoglobulin (ZIG), and Violet the Chickenpox

vaccination- which isn't usually recommended for under 12 months (she's

11.5 months!) Off to Emergency at the hospital, and into Isolation so

Bayly wouldn't pick up the other nasties floating around in the air... 3

hours later, Bayly's had the ZIG shot into his tiny little leg (screamed

blue murder I can assure you) but they've misplaced the Vaccine for

Violet!!! Can you believe it?! One of the biggest hospitals in NSW,

and they can't track it down!

11pm and we've all had it. So we're told they'll call us to bring

Violet back again today for her vaccination, but so far- no one's rung

me to organise it! She has to have it within 3 days of the original

outbreak.

is in Quarantine in his bedroom (with PS2, stereo/radio, TV, and

host of books and other stuff- I never had it so good when I had

Chickenpox as a kid!)

Bayly's on close watch to see if he develops the disease, if he does-

it's 7-10 days in hospital on antiviral I.V. 3xday. At Christmas!!!

*For those who are wondering- Chickenpox is indeed one of the regular

vaccinations now, but only recently in Australia, and only available

through GPs at a bloody big cost. It's not guaranteed for tiny tots.

The illness is still quite prevalent in Australia, and can lead to

Meningitis, Encephalitis, Pneumonia, and a lot of other stuff I don't

even want to think about, including death- and that's for ALL kids...the

Immuno-compromised have a much higher risk.

So, prayers please.

Just another thought about chicken pox and the kids who are on steroids.

One of my childen had *croup* a lot when she was little and was sometimes

put on a 3-day round of steroids. Our ped was always very careful to

question if she'd been exposed to chicken pox. I think he said being on the

steroids could make the chicken pox more severe or dangerous. It's been a

long time, so my memory's not real clear. I just remember him being very

careful about not wanting her on steroids if there was any known chance of

her contracting chicken pox.

With so many being on steroids, I just thought it worth mentioning.

My daughter was exposed to chicken pox last week. She's on .2 ml of

Methotrexate and 1 ml of Prednisolone. Her doctor is not worried at all

since she has had the immunization. He said to just call him if she got

them.

I'm glad you've checked with your doc. There could be other factors

involved in my ped's concern or it might have been a different steroid (and

I've got no idea what the dosage was). And I'm sure the immunization

alleviates a lot of the worry. I've heard even if they still get the

chicken pox, it's usually a much milder case.

By no means do I want to try and worry anyone.

No matter what, I hope she avoids the chicken pox!

I guess since my daughter is on a low dose of both methotrexate and

prednisolone and the fact that she did have the immunization she's not as

much of a risk as the other children here that haven't had the immunization

and may be on higher doses of meds. I sure hope none of your children get

the chicken pox and best of luck to you all!

now. It must be a worrying time for you.. Im sure Bayly will be

fine, It sounds like you were very proactive and got the situation

in hand.

My gosh! What a very stressful situation. I'm so glad that you somehow

managed to have everything taken care of so quickly. No easy feat. Your
