Hi, my daughter is going to do a quick steroid burst starting tomorrow for 5

days. She will be having 60 mg per day. This is our first time doing this and

I am wondering if anyone could share their experience with me. I am wondering

about side effects, which we were told she would experience, because the dose

is so high. Also, how quickly do the side effects go away once you finish the

burst? Thanks for any information. Kim

Hi Kim,

Our son went through MANY (60 or more) IV steroid treatments.

He is seen at Texas ish Rite in Dallas. He would receive what

they call PULSE STEROIDS. He never went on oral steroids...because

they felt they could stunt growth long term and the pulsing would not

(as much). Is this the type of steriods we are talking about for

your daughter? He recieved much larger doses (200-300mg range)....3

treatments for three days....for three weeks....then three treatments

for three days....every other week....then three treatments for three

days every third week...etc..until the symptoms were controlled. If

this sounds familiar...I can give you LOTS of information about this

process. E-mail me directly at mwestfal " at " ktc.com....I will be

out of town for a few days...but will check my e-mail today before

leaving and when I get back on Tuesday. Best wishes, Marguerite and

(systemic 4...diagnosed at 1)

Dear Kim, There are many, many of us whose children have had to use

prednisone. There is a long list of side effects with prednisone, but it

comes with long time usage. If your daughter is to be on prednisone just

for five days I wouldn't worry. What would concern me is the reason why she

needs the steroids. It has been my experience that when n needs the

steroids five days would not do the trick, and then if we suddenly just come

off of them-then we are worse off than where we started from. I think this

is true for most of the systemic kids. A five day usage of the medication

you might see imsomnia problems and that would be it. Others may chime in

to correct me if I am wrong. Her appetite will increase too, but I think

everything would be back to normal in a few days. (n, 15,

systemic) Let us know why she is doing the steroids.

Do you see Dr. Helen Emery, by chance? I was with her for two days

in late June when we went to Wash.DC to advocate for the arthritis

bill. I thought whe was a wonderful person, but we didn't

talk " patient shop " . Just curious. I'm in Boise, ID. So far,

you're one of the geographically closest people to me on the list.

I am just learning abou this " pulse " steroid treatment. I guess the

jury is still out???

Best wished to your daughter and your family.

Stacia,

That's doctor. Yes I agree she is wonderful. Children's hospital was

wonderful. Very through. was in our local hospital for three weeks

ruling out all the infectious disease. All they could tell me was what she

didn't have. Our PCP called up there and they had us come up. They admitted

she saw 13 specialist ruling out what it could be.
