Guest guest
My son is 11 and said he would like a pen pal. He just came back from the Boggy Creek Camp in Florida and had a wonderful time. He seems to be more in the spirit of sharing JRA with others. Let me know and I will forward his email address. V. Adam 11 JRA penpal > I am once again in search of a penpal. Guest guest
It was our first experience there. Adam's doctor encouraged us to let him go, in fact his doc was the camp doctor during camp. It is north of Orlando in a beautiful setting and each week of the summer they have a different group of kids. It is a sleep away camp and lasts five days, last week was rheumatology week...there were JRA kids along with hemophilia children. The camp was great, it had really nice cabins for the kids and the grounds were beautiful. There was a board walk, along with wide side walks for kids with wheelchairs......most places were air conditioned except for the cabins. There is an infirmary which has a pediatric rheumatologist and many nurses, so if your child needs medical attention it is available. They are familiar with all the drugs, it wasn't a hassle with different medications. They keep the kids really busy with different activities, it is on a lake and there is a great swimming pool, fishing and a theater, they have a dance. The counselors are wonderful must of them are in some way studying to be in the medical field....some are med students and psychology majors etc. They are all high energy and the kids are always supervised. Adam said it wasn't really a time to talk about arthritis, it was a time to forget. Some kids talked about their illness and some didn't.....it was just a fun packed week. He wished it was longer and he can't wait until next year. I will be honest, it was definitely not what I expected, I am not sure exactly what I expected; but, I was pleasantly pleased. It is free to each camper and it doesn't have to do with income; I believe the only requirement is to have a rheumatolgical disease. We got involved only because our doc is involved and I am glad we did. Hope this helps. The web site is www.boggycreek.org Re: JRA penpal > Could you tell us more about boggy creek.
