Guest guest
Hi Jeanine, Unfortunately not all children tolerate oral MTX so well.Nausea and diarea are both common but you have to careful with dehydration as it can cause the MTX to be more toxic. My son took MTX as injections for well over 2 years and while tapering it,we asked for pills and he developed severe gastritis. He was put back on shots and we tried Zantac for about 2-3 months before moving on to Prevacid to heal the damage the MTX caused his stomache. I hope Sadie feels better soon. Hugs Becki and 5 systemic
Guest guest
Hey Jeanine. MTX has so many side effects, but the upset stomach, nausea, etc. etc. are common with this. Caroline is currently on 20mg/weekly of oral suspension. She is always VERY tired the day of her dosage and doesn't eat much. She complains that her tummy hurts sometimes, but she does have nasty poopy diapers all day. We have her on Zantac and it seems to help. We have never tried the Phergan. I have heard that the injectable relieves most of the symptoms. If Sadie has problems next week I would push your rheumy for that. Good luck Alia and Caroline, age 2, poly and uveitis Methotrexate ? Sadie started taking pill form last week and got so sick. Her Rheumy wanted to see how she did with her next dose before switching her to shots. She is taking Phergan to combat the nausea. However, she has gotten a severe case of diarrhea and won't eat hardly anything, is this common with this med? Jeanine
Guest guest
--Jeanine.. The 1st week Nick took the pill form MTX he got very sick to his stomach, the 2nd week he had dirarraha (sp).. it was not fun. I think he only had 3 doses of the pill form before we switched. I think this is very common. The doc said she could add another medication to help with the tummy upsets but i didnt see the point of adding more drugs, they are on enough as it is and it might not have even helped. From reading this list I saw that most people ended up on the shots anyway and our rheumy prefers the shots anyhows. Nick did get very tired the day after his MTX but ive noticed that doesnt seem to be as bad lately. I mean its still there, but i also think being out of school and having no set schedule is also helping. He gets to sleep in everyday till he wants to wake up, not when i tell him its time. Its been much easier lately. I hope Sadie starts to feel better soon.
