Guest guest
Hi! I work at CVS and you do not necessarily have to have a prescription for it. There is some that's over the counter, but just not the 1mg that is by prescription. If your daughter is going to take MTX I would defiantly recommend her taking folic acid. Some patients on MTX get mouth sores and ulcers and the folic acid helps counter act that. (I know from experience) It's really cheap though so I would go for the prescription one. The amount in a multi-vitamin is usually not enough. I hope this has helped you!! Spirit folic acid supplements Another question.. For those of you who give your children folic acid supplements.. is this by prescription? What do I need to do if I want to do this for my daughter? She is currently on ibuprophen which depletes folic acid and will most likely start MTX at some point. Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer! Guest guest
Hi , was also 3 when he started MTX and couldn't swallow pills so they just had him take 400micrograms which is what you find in multi vitamins.By the time he was 4 he was a good pill swallower so we got the script for 1mg folic acid pills. They are pretty small. was also taking massive doses of Ibuprofin and with the 400mcg or the 1mg we never had any abnormal liver function tests and he's been on it for almost 3 yrs. Guest guest
We currently give it to Caroline through a Flintstones multi-vitamin. We could switch to the prescription, but we haven't yet. Caroline is only 2 so her Rheumy thinks because of her size that should be enough. Alia and Caroline, age 2, poly and uveitis folic acid supplements Another question.. Guest guest
Jordan, Hmmmmm, the folic acid topic. You'll probably get a wide range of opinions on this one, with the exception that we all agree on one point --- and that is that if you're on mtx, you should be getting at least 400micrograms of folic acid daily. Some will say they are told not to have folic acid on the day of the mtx, some are told to double the dose on the mtx day. Our rheumy says, it probably doesn't matter whether you double up or withhold on mtx day, as long as you are consistent giving it other wise. I'm mystified why anyone needs a prescription for folic acid. It's in every OTC multivitamin out there. I'll be curious to read the replies to your question.
