Hi Alia:

Hearing 'trace' amounts from where your little one was has brought a smile to

my face, good news:) I hope and pray that the next visit shows no cells

whatsoever.

Surgery? What would they do?

Take care.

Patty

HI Alia-

Boy, do I feel your pain. I hate the OR!!! That said, Genevieve had a knee

injection with Aristospan a month ago and is now FINALLY walking(!!).

Has your dr. mentioned this drug? If not, ask her about it. She had a mini-flare

about a week ago due to a cold she had. She couldn't walk for a day but when we

saw the rheumy last Tuesday, she can't find any swelling in any joints. This

injection may have thrown us into a remission! Since she had the flare with the

cold, she wants to keep her on the naproxen to make sure. We don't do back for 2

months(!!) and if she is still doing okay, we will taper that off. My point is

that this Aristospan has been a miracle drug for Genevieve. If I remember

correctly, it was not available at the time Caroline had her injection. It

didn't come back on the market until recently. This drug works up to a year, so

if I were you, I would ask if they can inject her with this if you decide to go

that route. We held out until we could get the Arisospan because the dr. and I

did not want to have to inject her very often as she is still a baby. This

pretty much guarantees no additional injection in that joint for around a year

or so. The other steroids can wear off as soon as 8 weeks. This one is great

for moms like me that hate the thought of frequent (if any) sedation/anesthesia.

Take care and good luck making your decision. Lots of prayers...

Therese

Re: Alia

Thanks Patty. We saw her rheumy yesterday and she confirmed that she

is back in her mini flare :(... She gave us a couple options that we

need to consider. She wants to take her back into the OR and drain

her right knee and inject it with steroid. She would also reinject

her left knee just to make them even. Or the other alternative is to

up the MTX to 20mg and add ibuprofin (prescription not OTC) and see

what happens. She wants us to do the injection MTX, but is willing to

stay with the oral for a few weeks and see how she is handling it. My

husband want to bring her back into the OR and I want to wait and see

if the meds will work. It's tough because right now we can't agree.

Dr. Akin only gets one day a month in the OR which is next Thursday

so we have to decide by Tuesday whether or not we are going ahead

with it. I don't know what to do. I am so hesitant about hauling her

back into the OR, but at the same time I don't want to see her in

pain. This morning she couldn't walk and was crying out in agony. I

gave her her meds and she seemed fine within a half hour. Dr. Akin

told us she was willing to wait a month before the surgery and if it

wasn't better that she would insist that we take her in.

Sorry this is so long... Anyone have any advice? Oh - we are tapering

her Prednisone because her doc is worried it's starting to have too

many bad side effects and that she is still on 15mg/day. We are going

to taper her down to 7mg/day over the next month and see what

happens. She told us that her knee will probably hurt more as we

taper, but we might luck out with the MTX increase... Who knows! I am

more confused than ever!!
