Nicks rhuemy called last night to tell me about his last labs (2/25)

shes been out of town since. Her office did call and told me

everything looked good. But when she called last night she told me

his BUN levels were elevated and we have to push more water down him.

I have always thought he was drinking enough.

Does taking MTX make you need more water than usual?? I have sent a

water bottle and a note to school, so hopefully they will let him

keep it at his desk.

I did have a nice chat with the rhuemy, shes so nice, she was very

pleased to hear how well Nick is doing. Says we should let him wear

the resting splints every night if he wants to ( the OT people said

only when hes flaring) but he asks for them every bedtime. She said

they must be helping him or he wouldnt ask for them. She was very

annoyed our insurance will not cover the injectable MTX. I could tell

shes dealt with a few insurances and doesnt take kindly to their

policies. I told her it was not a big deal as the cost is close to

our co-pay, but shes still not happy with that. I guess ill call them

up and have them contact her office. perhaps a prior autorization

from her will get it covered. She also said shes glad i didnt taper

the pred the week of the strep. Told me i made a good call :o))

We see her next week for our monthly appt... im sure everything will

look good!!!

Helen. I am so glad you finally got to talk with your Rhuemy. Yeah!

Isn't is such a nice relief. Our's gave us her pager number which is

so nice to have - just in case. Not sure about the water and the MTX,

Caroline just started this week. Hopefully Nick's school will be

accomodating, but it sounds like they have so far.

That is the pits about his meds not being covered. I wonder why. Alan

has the most awesome insurance - we are really fortunate. It is

through the teacher's union at his college so we luck out. Most of

Caroline's prescriptions only cost us $5 and we have no co-pays for

her doctors visits which is a huge blessing considering how many

times we go in! LOL!

Hope your appointment goes well next week. Ours is Wednesday and that

seems SOO far away!

-Hi Becki,

Thanks for the advice of the diarrhea. its good to know.

BUN is a kidney function test.. its part of the labs Nick has. Kinda

like the liver function. I hope its just a dehydration issue. The way

im forcing water into the kid, he will want to wear his water wings!!

LOL

Wow.. sounds like amazing insurance you guys have.. I guess im

thankful for ours as it could be worse... but they added a deductable

this year $500 per person...or $1500 for a family. We pay $15 copay

every time we see a doctor. Medications run between $10 and $35, The

vioxx is $35 a month, although i can send off and get 3 months worth

for one months copay.

Nicks already had over $3,000 of bloodwork alone.. We reached his max

deductable before Jan was over!!

Nick sees the rhuemy on Thursday.. lets hope Nick and caroline both

have great appts!!!

Helen:Are they planning on rechecking Nick's BUN? The reason I ask, is with the recent strep you want to make sure it isn't affecting his kidneys. Did they do a urinalysis? and Rob 14 Spondy

Hi Helen, I'm glad you decided not to taper the pred when Nick had strep.I wasn't sure if you had or not.Anytime the body is under stress is not a good time to taper. Not real sure what a BUN test is but dehydration can cause the MTX to become more toxic. If Nick ever develops true diarrhea, more then 1 loose stool or vomiting near MTX day hold off until the next week. Im sure the rheumy will recheck next week when we do our reg labs.

Nick didnt do the UA last visit as he " could'nt go " .

Thank you for letting me know about strep possibly affecting the

kidneys. Thats good to know. Although the strep came AFTER the

elevated BUN results. I did let the rheumy know when she called last

night that Nick had had a 2nd bout of strep. Im sure we will be

discussing it at the next visit.

Thanks again.. I learn something new every day
