A carefully selected holiday gift could actually benefit a child during

their hospital stay, according to UAB Child Life Specialist Jane Love.

“Find out if there are any special directives or tasks ordered by a

child’s physician. For example, many times after a major surgery doctors

try to get children up and walking as quickly as possible.” Love says a

remote control car is an ideal toy to prod a child to get up and moving.

Also, she said many times surgery patients need to do deep breathing

exercises following a procedure to loosen up fluids and alleviate

soreness. Love said pinwheels or bubbles are excellent ways to get kids

to breathe.
