Rob has back pain and has a spondy diagnosis, but the only changes in his spine they have found on MRI are a spondylolysis (a fracture of the pars interarticularis), which isn't related to the spondylitis, and spina bifida occulta, which also is not related. I remember reading that spondy can affect the spine and changes are not evident on xray until years later...has had changes in his spine yet? Guest guest Posted January 13, 2004 Report Share Posted January 13, 2004 Hi, . Chris' back problems began with lower back pain and stiffness, which would say that his hips hurt. Upon checking him out, his first rheumy (she relocated to Duke) said that actually what was hurting him and inflamed was his pelvic rim, along with his achilles tendon and his heels which is what added the spondy diagnosis for him. His new rheumy has found that his sacroilliac (sp?) in his back is inflamed. The back xrays I have not talked to the dr myself about yet. He called and spoke with my dh and told him that has a slight degree of scoliosis (which I was not worried about, as my oldest has this @ 8 degrees and I know that is nothing to really treat) and that otherwise things were ok. I am not too thrilled with this, but since he sees the dr on Monday, I chose to wait until then to speak to the dr myself. I looked at Chris' back last night and he still has the swelling on his spine that I first noticed about 3 months ago, with a spot above and below the biggest swelling now getting bigger. The area has a bruised look to it, but not really bruised. The rheumy did send a letter to Chris' ped with a copy to us in which he stated he would consider orthopaedic consult in January. I believe that is what will happen. I want a real answer as to why back looks like it does. He does occasionally now complain of stiffness or soreness in his lower back. Since starting MTX 2 years ago, he has done very well. I really believe something may be going on in his back and hopefully we can figure it out. did have an MRI in Sept 2001 and nothing significant was going on at that time. I am going to ask the dr to check and see if anything seems to have changed from that MRI to the xray had in Dec. Sorry I could not be more informative, after the visit Monday I will have more info. I am glad that he has an upcoming appointment about his back. I will be anxious to hear what you find out. I am especially interested if his SI joints appear inflamed on xray...one of the hallmarks of spondy. We are having a tough time sorting out Rob's back pain, whether its the spondylolysis or the AS, or muscle pain, or what! It sounds like it might be a good idea if they repeated Chris' MRI of the spine and compared it to the previous one, for changes. Maybe the orthopedic consult can help in that direction. Please keep me posted. I hope that you get some answers. The waiting is maddening, isn't it?
