I have to admit that I notice gas with milk also - or " real " ice cream.

I don't seem to notice it as much if I eat one of the sugar-free Blue

Bunny bars. Last weekend went away with hubby for our anniversary

(without the kids!) and had " real " ice cream twice - not a pretty

sight/smell - but boy was it yummy! Not something I would do every day

but great as a treat!

Gas

Since there has been so much discussion on gas this morning I thought

I

would share what I have found produces the worst problems for me and

that is carbs! I have found that if I eat potatoes (and I love baked

potatoes!), etc. or something very saturated in carbs I will get gas

including gas pains. I will be much more " aromatic " then too. For

some

reason popcorn doesn't affect me the same way.

Have you looked into a referral to an endocronologist. Hypothyroidism for

example can cause alternating bouts of constipation/diarrhea. You stated

that she is under alot of stress and is working varying shifts, each of

which can disrupts the bodies rhythm.

TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), T4 and T3 should be tested. It is not

uncommon for TSH to be tested alone, but one can have normal TSH (produced

by pituitary) with a low T3/T4.

I've never heard that hypo or hyper-thyroidism may be

responsible for a GI distress. The thyroid hormone's

primary function is to regulate the

temperature/metabolism of the body.

However, I can see how hyperthyroidism might cause

diarrhea, secondary to an infection (by increasing the

temperature of the body, the stool in the large

intenstine will become more liquid).

Here is a section of the following link:

http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/dept/thyroid/HypothyroidismHP.html

The symptoms of hypothyroidism are mainly dependent on the amount of

decrease in thyroid hormone and duration of time that the decrease has been

present. For most patients, the symptoms are mild and can often be confused

with other problems. The symptoms may include the following:

fatigue and muscle swelling or cramps (mainly in the arms and legs)

tingling in the fingers

loss of equilibrium

weight gain

dry skin and cold intolerance

yellow skin

coarseness or loss of hair

goiter (enlarged thyroid causing a lump in the neck)

constipation

hoarseness

memory and mental impairment

decreased concentration

depression

irregular or heavy menstruation

infertility or miscarriages

slowed heart rate

myxedema: fluid infiltration of the tissues causing puffiness (mainly in the

face)

Here is another good link:

http://www.hosppract.com/issues/1999/03/dmmmazz.htm

Hyperthyroidism will typically have the opposite effects for a period of

time.

SUGAR makes me have gas. When I know I'll be in a social situation, I avoid

all sugar and it REALLY helps cut down on the gas. I think it does get

better over time, but it may just be that I'm more careful with food

selection now.

Good luck!

Gas

Help! Does anyone have ideas as to how to minimize the gas. I'm becoming

a

social recluse after 3:00 in the afternoon. I've tried varying my food

intake but nothing seems to help. Are there certain types of foods to

avoid?

Thanks for any ideas you can give me. Sara 10/16/02

To minimize gas: decrease gas-forming foods (broccoli, cauliflower, salad,

eggs, beans...), decrease processed foods (especially hot dogs!), try Gas-X.

It varies with everyone! Hope this helps.

Since you're only about 6 months out, I'm not sure there's much you can do

about it. It gets better over time though, if that's any consolation.

i am almost three years post op and I still have this problem. It is

embrassing and I have tried everything. Perhaps Dr..R. can tell you what

would help. I have had to cancel social functions because of this problem. It

is a big issue that is never mentioned as a side effect of weight loss

surgery.

I have found that the gas is related to the foods that I eat. For

example, V-8 juice and eggs do not give me gas...Veggie soup, meats,

cheese, fish do give me really bad gas. Try eating different foods and

determine how long it takes you to have gas from them. Then test out

different foods. One of my contacts said she could clear a room with her

gas and I agree...even I have to leave.

I get awful gas too. The biggest offender for me is sugar but also, eating

too much in one sitting will get those gas bubbles going faster than

anything. Safe foods in small quantities for me are proteins and veggies.

Watch out for sugars in sauces like ketchup and other things if you

determine that sugar is an offender for you...

Good luck!

Yes, you have said it all concerning the gas issue. It is a BIGGIE

and is an adjustment to make.

I would have the surgery again however because of the health benefits. I just

got a good report from my new Oncologists. NO CANCER ANYWHERE IN MY BODY!

Thank you Lord for the MGB.

I am glad that you posted that! It has by far been the biggest problem for

me as well. I think my husband is immune, as well. I know people say that

love is blind, but with our husbands, what can we call it??????

Thanks for being honest!

I have to agree. Whatever gas issues I have at times are diet controlled or

caused and it is a lot of bad choices not just a normal diet of a regular

day... I have never had the loose stools either other than if I have eaten

really, really bad on a holiday where there were lots of bad choices and not

just one here or there.

I can honestly say I don't think what you are experiencing is

the " norm " for the MGB. Granted I think all of us have experienced

some of it. I am almost 3 years post-op and even though I have had

some smelly gas, stinky BM's from time to time. I can honestly say I

have never experienced anything nearly as bad as you are describing.

I work in a small office with several ladies and have no trouble at

all. Hope it gets better for you.

Have you added anything new (different brand etc..)? Are you doing

anything differently? Throw out those " suppose to happen " ideas. You are

different from everyone else on the planet.

What was your diet like before? Help us to help you.

Gas

Okay, I've been on the diet (religiously) now for a little over 7

weeks. And all of a sudden I've got huge gas problems. (thought

that wasn't supposed to happen until the 3rd or 4th month - over

achiever I guess) Intestines all twisted. I know someone posted

some ideas on dealing with it, but I just can't find them.

Any help?

Hi Katy,

The first week after banding I had the same problem, but every day it gets

better. I have almost no gas now, and then when I do it comes out pretty quickly

with no pain. You can help yourself by taking Gas-X tabs, drinking lots of

water, and walking walking walking. Good luck to you.

Hi Judy,

I honestly believe you can only resolve this by adapting a new mind-set.

All our family pass wind...merrily, cheerfully and as much as possibly

secretly, practising the art of the 'innocent face'.

As Schreck says, " Better out than in, I always say! "

That movie should be compulsory viewing, helping the esoteric hyper-cultured

types to come back to earth a bit. :-)

I have noticed, that increasing my water intake downsizes the storm.

Also, green tea seems to be the worst culprit (if you can call it that).

The question is, is passing wind healthy or not?

Many find, that eating food with lots of roughage e.g. dried fruit, which

is very healthy, will also produce an ample supply of wind.

Gleefully guilty on all charges;-)

Margret:-)

I think it bothers some and not for others. I had problems with the

protien powder for a while, and still do if I take to much in one

day. I think it depends on what brand you are using. I bought some

of the myoplex lite from another member for shipping cost, because she

hated it. Turns out I love it and it doens't have the same effect the

other protien powder did. So I think it comes down to the right brand

of powder. If you really want to get rid of it, I would pay shipping

cost for what you have left. I have a hard time buying it, so if you

need to get rid of it let me know.
