Guest guest
From Nature with love has borax. I believe that it is used to soften the water or something. It's starting to get cold here too. in MT Borax I have run across a lot of skin care recipes that ask for you to add Borax. What exactly does it do and where do you buy it. The only borax I know of is used in the laundry business. Help somebody. (catlady514) in Michigan Burrrrrrrr! it's getting cold here. Guest guest
I have been concerned about Borax because I know so little about it. I see here that it used in toiletries, but I also saw it on TV as one of the toxic substances people keep in their homes. Can anyone educate me? Thanks. Guest guest
Hello, I looked up descriptions of borax in some of my books and this is what I found. What's in Your Cosmetics?, by Aubrey Hampton stated; " borax:This naturally occurring mineral( also known as pyroborate, diborate or sodium borate) is used to manufacture glass, ceramic glazes, enamels, water-softening agents, flame-proofing materials, preservatives and fluxes. It may be harmful if breathed into the lungs during manufacturing or processing. In cosmetics, borax is used as an emulsifier. When combined with beeswax in a cream, it usually makes up about 6% of the weight of the wax. As the concentration of borax increases, the cream stiffens. " In Natural Body Care Products, A glossary of Terms and Ingredients, put out by Feather River Co. they state " Sodium Borate: Borax, a naturally occurring mineral. pH adjuster, emulsifying cleanser. Traditional cream formed by emulsification with beeswax. Reports of irritation. Will foam in Bath Salts. " Hope this helps. That's it! " Borax may be totally safe for skin. I just don't know. The thing that I like to bear in mind though is that something is not necessarily safe because it is natural. I mean hemlock and poison ivy are 100% natural, too. Sage
Guest guest
Putting baking soda in bath salts causes clumping~I tried it out just to see for myself and it indeed caused clumping!!!!! My recipe just calls for Epsom salts --Kosher or fine sea-salt (I use Kosher) and a few fo's or eo's !!!!! thats it!!!!!! Im sure there are different recipes for bath salts but the way i do it is flawless! (not trying to sound like a know it all either! I know Im far from it compared to many of you here!!) :-) Misty http://community.webtv.net/mpw98/ForeverYoursATouch
Guest guest
Works as an emulsifier I've been told. Recently too and by someone who is very knowledgable about chemicals. I just can't recall the exact reason or combination of borax and what that makes it so. Anyhow, thought I'd pass that along... **************************************************************************** Sullivan americanwumn@... americanwumn@... Guest guest
Tht'a just Borax. You can find it in the laundry aisle. The brand I use is " 20 Mule Team " . hth, tina 's Handcrafteds a bit of fragrance always clings to the hand ----- Original Message ----- I've seen hundreds of sites that sell borax for soaps & lotion-making, but can you purchase this same type of borax in the grocery store? I saw a blue box of borax, about a 2 lb size, and it says " Borax " on the box and it was located in the Laundry soap aisle, but can this be right? Is it just borax or do they add other ingredients to it? I can't find an ingredients listing on the box which leads me to believe it's just borax, but of course I want to make perfectly certain about it before I use it in my products. Can anyone confirm? Guest guest
Just read the ingredients and make sure there are no other additives - that should be right. We have the 20 mule team variety where I live. ;0) Willow
