Water: softened or reverse osmosis?

All summer, I've been pulling well-water from outside and using a Brita

filter.

But now that fall is here, my husband has shut off the outside water. All

that is available now to me in the house is softened or reverse osmosis

water.

I am not going to buy water (buying the Brita filter when I am married to

THE water man was almost cause for divorce!).

Which is my better choice until well water is once again available: softened

or reverse osmosis?
