Ashlee,

I assume that Madison is still on liquid Motrin. We ran into the same

problem many years ago but were fortunate to be able to get it thru the

military when we couldn't get it covered at our local pharmacy. The only

thing I can suggest is to appeal to your insurance company. Include info

from the doc stating Madison's dose and frequency of that dose and the need

for her to be on it long term. Then price the Motrin at a couple of local

stores and figure out how much you would spend per year buying it over the

counter. Include that info in your letter. (We figured out that Em's liquid

Motrin would cost us over $1,000 per year and that was ten years ago!)

Once Madison can swallow pills her Motrin should be covered as long as she's

getting a prescription strength dose.

If all else fails, discuss other NSAID options with Madison's

rheumatologist.

Subject: HELP!!!

We just switched insurance companies and they said that they do not cover

ibuprofen since it is over the counter??? Has anyone else had this

problem...is there any way around it??

Thanks!

What about using liquid Naproxen? I remember discussing this (Motrin vs.

Naproxen) with Sam's doctor 4 years ago and he said that Naproxen was actually

better than Motrin because it stayed in the body longer. We give Sam 5 ccs

twice a day.

I know you can get Naproxen in pill form and perhaps because of Sam's age,

insurance is approving the liquid. I don't know.. insurance companies are very

strange. Sam's Kineret comes as pre-filled syringes, of which we have to

discard 2/3 of the medicine before we administer. The cost of this is $1500 per

month, but we pay $40 - WHAT A WASTE! Yet they won't pay for Motrin to treat a

chronic illness.... something is definitely wrong with this picture.

Re: HELP!!!

Ashlee,

My insurance company never covered it and it was my most expensive out of

pocket med. That liquid sure doesn't go far.

Does your states Walmart's have the $4 generic drugs? All the Ibuprofins from

the liquid to the big 800's are listed.

Becki and 8 systemic

Thank you all so much for the replys!!

I used to have Anthem insurance and they paid for it and Madison takes a total

of 5 teaspoons a day of the liquid. I called her doc and he said that they

didn't have the strength available in the pill. Also she takes different doses.

1 1/2 t morning and noon and 2 t at night. Since she's on a lower dose I may

not be able to get insurance to pay for it. I used to get 6 bottles a month for

$10. I guess I'll just have to stock up when it's on sale. I have seen it at

our local grocery store for $2.99 a bottle but that's the cheapest i've seen it.

She used to take Naproxyn but she can't anymore because she had that reaction

where she got little scabs on her face and if you barely touched her it would

scab up. It has a name but I can't remember. :( Mostly happens to blonde hair

blue eyed girls...which of course Madison is.

I'm going to try to get her prescrip filled soon and see what happens. With

anthem they would pay for it at the drug store but not if I used the mail order

so I hope it will work the same now.

Also we have coventry - southern health insurance.

THanks again so much and Madison goes back to UVA in March so I may see about

something else she may could take.

Thanks again everyone!

Hi, I had a hysterectomy about 2 years after my MGB, no problems at all. I was

in the hospital for 3 days. Didn't need much for pain. I explained the MGB to

my OB/GYN doc and he had no problems with anything. Let me know if you have

specific questions, I will answer what ever I can'

Hi,

Unfortunately I had mine before my MGB, but my advice to you is this.

My friend did this after she lost a lot of weight, after your

hysterectomy is completed ask your doctor if you can have a plastic

surgeon " close you up " and give you a tummy tuck at the same time. You

will probably have to pay for that part of it as your insurance may not

cover that part of the surgery, but, it will be way cheaper than going

for the tummy tuck on a different seperate surgery. My friend looked

fabulous after and her scars were much less than mine have been. I had

the hysterectomy 5 years before my MGB, then ended up getting a tummy

tuck and hernia repair 2 years after my MGB. Way more costly, wish I

could have done it all at once!

Good luck to you

Thanks Lynette! It's so good to hear how other mgber's faired under other

surgeries after their mgb. I have to get my

Iron levels up ( currently 5.9) above 13 before I can go forward with the

hysterectomy.

I don't know what to say, . I'm at a loss to understand why you would

have only lost 8 pounds since Feb. if you're doing all the right things. I don't

have a band, but still you should have lost much more weight than 8 pounds. I

wonder if the band is positioned correctly? What has the doctor told you in this

regard; what is his explanation?

I am so sorry to hear that you haven’t

had any success yet. But it does work, not sure why it’s not working for

you. I’m sure you are very frustrated and angry right now and rightfully

so. You said you know for sure that your band size is 4cc and you have 3.8cc

which should make your restriction really low. You should not be able to eat

hardly anything with it being so tight. Call Dr. A office and see what they have

to say. Stress if a big factor too, it can do crazy things to your body. Be

patient it will work, follow your diet and exercise and you will see the

results soon enough.

I missed your earlier email.

I have the band. My journey with it was a slow weight loss. Yours is slower than mine. But I will say that the way you eat is still important, as is how much and what you eat. Exercise is also important. It's all always important....but maybe more so with the band or any weight loss surgery. The surgery is only part of the story, not the whole story. If you can, ramp up your exercise. After I had the band put in I also exercised strenuously every day for more than a year to lose one pound a week. That was enlightening to me. I figure I had pretty much wrecked my metabolism with all my years of yo-yo dieting/weight fluctuations.

When I was not sure why I was not losing weight when I thought I should be, I wrote down what I consumed just to see if that's the area that needed correction.

As to advising others not to have the surgery, that's a totally legit response. You're just telling your story and your story, to date, is pretty frustrating. It may be that WLS doesn't work for everyone......I can see that. So you are calling it like you see it. But I have to encourage you to find out what does. Please DO NOT give up.

I will tell you that I am not eating more than 800 calories per day. I am often hungry. I exercise less now than my first year and it shows in an over-all 10 lb gain. But I have made a decision that I'm happier with the current reality than before WLS. It isn't perfect. It's the choice I made.

If you want to discuss this in detail or more, please write back.

I don't have a band--I have a sleeve, but what I would suggest is that you write down EVERYTHING you are eating. You may be shocked at the number of calories that you are taking in and don't think your are. I keep my calories down to about 800 per day and no more than 30 grams of carbs. You need to look at the number of carbs you are eating and are they whole grain. Carbs are a real killer when it comes to trying to lose weight.

Well, with any surgery type you have to do most of the work.  You aren't going to lose well if you don't change things a bit.  Cut out ALL white carbs, all of them.  General rule of thumb, if it has flour or sugar in it, don't eat it.

Eat dense proteins first to fill you up so you don't have room for garbage foods.Don't worry about the number of cc's in your band, it doesn't matter, it's a total non issue.  The only concern you should have about cc's is if you have the right amount.

Track all your food and liquids.  ALL.  Use something like....www.thedailyplate.comEverything that goes in your mouth should be listed there daily. It doesn't really matter what surgery type you have.  If you don't change eating and exercise habits you will not lose and maintain the loss.  It takes a lot of calories to maintain a bigger body, the higher your BMI the higher your BMR.

hmmmmm.....I have to say that in order of importance for MY routine, it's (1) proper food and exercise (2) the band. If I had the problems you're having, I woud live my life as if it weren't there in the sense of eating right and exercising. You may have no idea what either of these two things means for you so get to trying out different things. I mix up my routine a lot -- especially exercise -- and in the way I have discovered a few things about myself. I need more exercise than I ever thought I would. I can be filled up with 800 calories. This is true about me with or without the band. I just ignored the fact and over-ate most of my life before I got the band.

If you really haven't tried to eat that well, yet, why not do that......The band won't do what only you can do which is to put proper and proper amounts of food in your mouth and exercise.

Of my life now I often think the band makes no difference in my life. I STILL have to eat right and exercise. It did, of course, provide me with a tremendous mental boost at first. I lost about a pound a week the first 68 weeks I had it. Then I backed off on the exercise and gained back 10 lbs. (I went from 206 to 138 and am now 146 for the last year.) This is just what would happen without the band. It isn't magic.

I would like to think you can make it work for you but the operative words here are "you" and "work". Since you mentioned not having the money to do the operation in the first place, it is probably a lost cause to advise going to the sleeve. You've done what you've done, see how you can make it work. You probably have the diet principles for use with the band. Now grab a friend and go walk 5 miles a night -- or whatever is fun for you: dancing, biking, jump rope -- whatever you can move to. I found that for me, even as athletic as I am (or was) I still need more exercise than I would have ever guessed. I'm still amazed...

Tell us what you come up with. Don't give up! LJ

I was 70 yoa when I was banded by the marvelous Dr Aceves and that was 4/07. I weighed 208. Today I weigh 130 and I am 5/4. My weight loss has been unlike anything else that I have done in my million years of dieting. From April 2007 to about end of September I lost about 25-30#, then stopped.

Got discouraged but continued w/the exercise and counting the calories and basically aimed for 900-1000 calories a day. Then about January of 08 I suddenly started losing again and by April or May was down another 20#....then stopped and was about 150-55 then and was totally ok w/that because I felt so much better....then about six months later down another 10-15# DOING NOTHING DIFFERENT, GO FIGURE!

Last January started losing again and went from 145-46 to the 130 I have been since about May. Doing nothing different. I have no answers, it is just the way this old bod likes to hang on that fat!! But I have been consistent w/exercise and counting calories. There are days when I am simply not hungry but gee I want to eat anyway...but I don't. There's never two of those days in a row by the way. I have had 3 or 4 fills and a couple of unfills. I now have 1/2cc and I am a bit more hungry than I have been but also was having trouble w/heartburn and coughing at night, the last unfill has taken care of that.

Why do we think it is going to be EZ??? It is a tool. Like lots of tools we are given in life some of us are grateful for the opportunity (not every day) and utilize that gift...others just don't wanna do the work and take the responsibility. Belly up to the bar honey and participate in your own recovery. You CAN DO THIS!! joanne

Re: HELP!!!

,

I have heard the same from many band patients, I had gastric sleeve surgery and it has worked so well. I lost 135 in the last year!

....

The one thing I ALWAYS try to REMEMBER...

" THE LAPBAND IS A TOOL, NOT A SOLUTION.. "

You wrote the answer to your own question...

'I havent realy tried to eat that well and almost never exercise...i think im

being stubborn and am waiting for the band to start workn before i try myself!!

'

We all got fat because we have serious food issues.. You need to start HELPING

yourself to lose weight.. WHAT are you eating? Butter? Cheese? Ice Cream?....

Creamy soups?....

Start some type of exercise program, ANYTHING.. Your metabolism may have dropped

also..

Dr. Aceves installed the tool, it's up to YOU to put it to use... This is when

YOU STEP-UP and take CONTROL of YOUR life.. No one else is going to do it for

you..

Take care,

MICHELLE

So you already know the answer. I don't have a band, but NO I wouldn't use diet pills for anything. Come on---if diet pills worked that great, then none of us would have had weight loss surgery and we wouldn't have been fat. So that tells me they do not work!

This is only your tool (the band) and it is up to you to use your tool in the best possible way. So it is going to take work on your part and effort with some exercise. Sorry, I didn't give you the easy way out. There is NOTHING easy about losing weight! It requires you to work at it.

Hugs,

Suzanne

I took diet pills for over 30 years, was hooked on them (Phentermine) and was

buying them on internet sites, etc. I finally decided to get OFF them - that was

about 4 years ago. They didn't help me lose weight (well maybe in the first 10

days they did), I was just addicted to them so I took to feel 'normal.' I would

never suggest using any kind of prescription (or other kind) of diet pills as

they just don't work. You get a little boost in the beginning, and then your

body gets used to them and they stop working. Not a good idea.

I've lost 112/113, depends on which day I weigh, pounds in the last 13 months,

most of it from sleeve surgery. I never exercised to lose it. It came off over a

period of time. You should exercise; I was lazy. Now I have a lot of loose skin

which will need to be revised through plastic surgery. I look fine in clothes

but not naked, ya know. I'm 5'-7.5 " tall and weigh 133/134, and wear a size 4/6

in pants and med. in tops, sometimes smalls depending. My BMI is 20. Weight

comes off faster with a sleeve; sorry, but that's a fact. You have a band, so

you'll have to work a bit harder to get the weight off, but you can do it, you

just have to get your head around it and start doing the right things, as others

have told you. Best of luck and keep coming back here for support.
