I plan to get a cast iron pan, but I'd like to find a quality, but not too expensive, set of stainless steel cookware. Or if someone can recommend a brand of ceramic cookware then that might be an option. > > Thanks, > > @@ Hi , If it does not have to be new, then try your local Thrift shop or Salvation Army Store. I got my iron pan, steel frying pan and my Corning ware Visions Glass pot; each for about $6.00 ;-] Be certain to bring a small magnet with you to test the sides and bottom of the pots/pans is magnetized steel. If the pan/pot is magnetic, it is 18/0...if not, it is 18/8 (or 18/10), which is not 100% steel. The reason I mention this is because I did a little research and some of Cuisinart's steel pans, in example, tend to be 18/10. Therefore, name brands, may not be necessarily always the best. There are two kinds of stainless steel : one kind is attracted to magnets, the other kind is not. So give it the magnet test . You want to buy only the magnetically-attractive type of stainless steel, which apparently has very low nickel content and does not leach nickel into food. Nickel is likely more toxic than mercury and the main reason for concern with stainless steel cookware.
