Guest guest
spirulina powder...can this be used as a colorant? I use spirulina. Works great. Makes a nice bluish green color. How much you add makes a difference in the final color. It works good as a swirl too. Sharon NC

It won't hurt them, as far as I know, but it could sure irritate *you* to find your pretty green powder strewn all over the place. Voice of experience here! Guest guest
You might check out the iron content of the Spirulina. I might be remembering completely wrong, but it seems like I heard it was real high in iron. It's very possible I'm thinking of something else, but if it is the Spirulina, not only was it high in iron, but high in a easily assimilated form of iron - different than what is usually found in most foods. If that is the case, you proabably shouldn't take it. (I can't even remember where I might have read this!) Guest guest
I did a quick search - it SOUNDS like wonderful stuff - but yes, very high in iron! And, like I thought, it's not just any iron, but very easy to absorb iron, unlike the iron naturally found in most foods - like spinach. Here are just a couple of things I found. Sounds like it's also very high in beta carotene, which I think we also need to watch. (DARN! That's good for eyes, and I'm more worried about my eyes lately than my liver!) http://resorthealth.com/herbs/spirulina.html " SPIRULINA CONTAINS: Organic Iron 58 times more Iron than spinach and 28 times richer in Iron than raw beef liver " ---------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.spirulinasource.com/library-iron.html Iron Bioavailability and Prevention of Anemia Availability of iron to rats from spirulina, a blue-green algae. by P. and E. Shubert. 1986. Pub. in Nutrition Research Vol 6, 85-94. USA. Spirulina contains a highly available form of of iron. It is unusual to find plant-derived iron that is highly available. Absorption of iron by rats and humans has been found to be highly correlated. Spirulina fed rats absorbed iron more than or equal to rats fed iron from an iron supplement, ferrous sulfate. In comparison, absorption of iron from potatoes and whole wheat bread is about half of ferrous sulfate. It appears spirulina is a fairly concentrated source of available iron. __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Yep Claudine, you were right the first time...even Doc agrees ;-} I was such a DUH again...just becuz iron isn't mentioned as an ingredient, the blue-green algea is the iron. It does sound like a good herb for normal people...and I guess hair loss could be caused by insufficient iron, esp in women. Oh well, good that I only took it for about 3-4 days when I first got it...then forgot all about it. Another $30 down the tubes, oh I just thought of someone I can give it to. It really does suck to have Hepatitis C! Hugggs Carol claudine intexas wrote: > > I did a quick search - it SOUNDS like wonderful stuff - but yes, very > high in iron! Guest guest
Hi Cara, Think i remember that somebody said it needs to be taken in large amounts or will just move heavy metals around in the body..also there has been discussion about it often being contaminated. I have only done one swoop through the herb store long ago now.. All of the supplements are gone except the spirulina.. Have used it a couple of time, but in places where it would come out of the body as well..(anally, vaginally, and sniffing it!!??) At the time i did use it I did have other stuff come out with it and great improvement!! Have not often intuited taking it orally in the capsule, this is why i still have some left, sometimes i use the capsules to put other things in or part spirulina and part something else.. Did help me. Have a feeling that it " attracts " the stuff you want out of the body, or attaches itself to it and that is why i intuit to use it in places where it comes out within a couple of days.. Only used it for about a week, but did make a jump in terms of getting better that week.. I noticed that one of the > ingredients in the Intramax that was NOT in Intramin is spirulina. 5 years ago, I was taking spirulina regularly, and felt that I was getting a boost in energy from it. Then I went to several people who did compatibility testing via muscle testing, ART, EAV, etc. All of them tested the spirulina as being bad, which mystified me because I was convinced it was doing me good. Later on in a discussion group, someone mentioned that Earthrise spirulina (the brand I was taking) was known to be contaminated with lead. So that might have been it. I also think that all of the freshwater algae products (chlorella, spirulina, blue-green algae) are potentially contaminated with heavy metals, because of their very nature to attract heavy metals. The salt-water based sea vegetables don't seem to have this problem, or if they do it's not nearly as bad, as I've regularly tested well for things with kelp, dulse, etc. in them. Alternately, it may be that the spirulina is mobilizing the metals already in the body, causing them to be let loose into the bloodstream and cause further damage. My wife stopped taking spirulina because it caused her heart palpitations, and I think this could be caused by mobilized metals (I also got heart palpitations following the removal of my mercury fillings). That all said, I have occasionally tested well on " Vitamineral Green " , which contains both spirulina and chlorella in the ingredients list. So perhaps these aren't contaminated, or perhaps there are other beneficial ingredients which outweigh the negatives of these being there. But in general, I think the safe thing to do is to avoid the fresh water algaes altogether (chlorella, spirulina, blue-green algae). Guest guest
Hi folks, I have taken spirulina for nearly two years. At times as these days I take as much as 40 grams daily. I get a great boost from it as from nothing else. Also, besides being electrosensitive I am very sensitive to the quality of the food I eat. Spirulina is one of the foods I like the most. The spirulina I have been ingesting for two year now could be potentially polluted from who knows what since it is harvested in the Texcoco Lake which is in a heavily populated area near Mexico City. Yet, I still take it because if I do not take it I feel very bad. When I take it I feel the spirulina stimulates my elimination procecess which is a good thing. I am very sensitive to pollutants... much more than most people I know personally. I cant stand smoking, incense, dust, some chemical paints, but I get much benefit from potentially polluted algae. I can also feel when something is making toxins flush out of my body as some clays, fermented foods and spirulina. It is likely that spirulina " recycles " some of the pollution into some nutrients, I read it thrives in human urine. Who knows? Guest guest
A good friend many years ago suggested spirulina to me for energy. I use Klamath Falls spirulina in capsules (www.klamathbluegreen.com) that I buy at the local health food store (I buy Blue Green Algae Enzyme Enhanced) and take one first thing in the morning. I also use another product called Overdrive from Pharmanex that has spirulina in it also. My friend told me to take only one at first and then build up as needed, but don't take too late in the day as it can give you so much energy you won't sleep as well. It works for me. If I forget to take it I drag through the day. in La Selva Beach CA Rich / all:benefits with spirulina ? Guest guest
I had wanted to add a blue green algae or other green powder into a smoothie with coconut oil or milk and I have really wanted to use spirulina because I have heard how beneficial it is. The problem is that every time I try to use it, I get very nauseous and even vomit. One time, I inadvertently took a total food source vitamin that had the spirulina in it. It wasn't long before I found myself getting sick and recognized they were the same symptoms I got when I took spirulina. Sure enough, it was on the label. I had missed it when I had read through prior to taking it. Has anyone else had this problem and would anyone have any idea what is my problem? Guest guest
I take Klamath Falls spirulina every day and love how it gives me energy. I don't know that I would replace my Stress B Complex by Twinlabs with it, but it is worthwhile as a supplement. A friend got me onto it years ago as an energy boost and I take it first thing in the morning. This is what they replied: Aloha, Please find below the response to your concern from Gerald R. Cysewski Ph.D. First we should point out that the information presented in the book, “The pH Miracle: Balance Your Diet, Reclaim Your Health” about Spirulina is not correct. Spirulina does not thrive in acidic conditions. Quite to the contrary, Spirulina thrives in very alkaline conditions under pH’s of 10 to 11. Spirulina itself is an alkaline food and fits very well with the nutritional theory put forth in the book. Second Spirulina is a blue-green algae, or in scientific terms, a cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria are a very ancient life form and do have the ability to produce vitamin B12. The vitamin B12 in Hawaiian Spirulina Pacifica is the result of the natural synthesis of vitamin B12 by Spirulina and is not as a result of bacterial contamination from birds. The authors of this book are misinformed. Best regards, Gerry Gerald R. Cysewski, Ph.D. Chief Science Officer Executive Vice President ---------------------------------------------------------- My conclusion: I feel that my Spirulina came from a good source, after looking over their website, and I appreciate their response - it rings true. Other things in the book " The Ph Miracle " concerned me as being misinformed. There is some good information in there too, and I know that boosting your ph - getting your body from acidic to more alkaline is important - but too much misinformation and painting everyone with a broad brush. Just thought I'd let you all know, since I brought it up. Deb From: ncruzsaubert@... <ncruzsaubert@...> Subject: Re: spirulina Date: Monday, February 21, 2011, 8:49 AM Greaaat.
