i have goose bumps reading your email thanks so much for sharing and

before my own surgery i was told i wouldn't be able to understand speech

without speech reading because i was without sound for 28 yrs just like

you

i proved that statement wrong and proud to do so this CI is really an

amazing device it's open worlds unknown to me

That was a lovely report you wrote I was smiling reading it! It shows you

showed great patience and a good attitude/mind-set in going for the

implant... not getting expectations up and taking it all one day at a time

etc., not letting low scores bother you... onwards and upwards!

Today's test proved to me that pre-lingual deaf (profoundly deaf since

birth)

CAN do it!

I went ahead for implant in hope that even if I can get 25% discrimination,

I

will be pleased, that all I care about, knowing that hearing better will

give

me better lip-reading communication. I never dream that I would

discriminate

speech.

To give you all a little background, I was clearly born profoundly deaf.

Back in the 50's, they could not test babies until they reach age of 3 years

old.

Until my test, they had questioned my hearing but until I was tested, they

had no way of knowing how much. I never verbalize a sound, not even

baby-talk.

At the time, they discovered that I had profound loss and I was given my

first hearing aid.

I was placed in Oral preschool for Hard of Hearing (don't ask me, I am and

always been deaf) based on my ability of being such a " chronic motor mouth " ,

later mainstreamed, never learned sign until I went to college.

Fast forward 40 some years........ I decided to be implanted, still worn my

beloved hearing aid. Keep in mind that my hearing NEVER decreased as I got

older, other word, what I heard at 3, same loss at 40 something. That was

about

95dB average with no response ever above 750 or 1,000 freq.

Today, I had my first hearing test since I was implanted. I am still in

awe,

and " refuse " to believe that the audiogram I saw belong to me. I heard at

average of 30dB clear across the chart, from 250 to 8,000! There is NO WAY

it

looked like anything I had for the last 40 some years. 30dB is ideal

hearing

range for the implantee, which it equals to having mild hearing loss. I

then

had single word test, open set, that went from 2% with hearing aid to a

" nice "

4% with implant. I didn't care because it been only one month and I knew in

time, it will improve. HOWEVER........ in doing open set sentence, I scored

a

whooping 30%. That alone is too unbelievable for me. Hearing aid score was

3%

With all those " pre-lingual deaf can't benefit " ,,,,,,, I still can't believe

whoever started it would start that rumor....... I am a living proof that we

CAN do it!

I am researching CI stories (mostly pre-lingual Deaf) good and bad...

everyone should be aware of both sides of the equation before making their

minds up... I'm gathering the info for a TV documentary. We won't publish

it or put it on TV without further approval from you... it's just to build

up a genuine data of evidence to back up both sides for and against the CI.

Here in Ireland the information is mostly one-sided... A trait that even

hearing TV producers have questioned. Even more so when we have met an equal

amount of 'failed' CI's as well as successful CIs. Note I only use the word

in ' ' for want of a better word really as most of them have other factors

that explain why they say the CI has failed them - i.e. high expectations

not met, or some have good sound recognition but have facial twitching and

migraines.

We noticed that here this group is all positive, positive, positive's

experience... occasionally the ugly head does pop up (e.g. on Culture; brand

wars etc.) but I don't see any posts from anyone who declares themselves

'failed' CI.

Not all implants are successful and that is well known. Sharing

them is actually encouraged but also it is preferred to be the

actual listmember's experience.

You should understand that it's difficult to post about a failure

issue among individuals who are telling how well they are doing.

Anyone who goes thru this process wants it to work as planned and

well. Stating that it doesn't can be painful. We have had

instances of implants with failures on the list. We don't see many

of them but they are here. An interesting factor in these failures

has been found that many are surgical failures rather than actual

device failures but the real life issues are scattered thru the

archives and you can find some of the examples you are looking for.

For your research regarding failures and problems, you might also

want to join Problem CI which is another list I run.

Mickey,

All those supplements sound good, but I've got one piece of advice, give each

supplement at least two weeks to see if there are going to be any side effects

or reactions from it and then introduce the next one. I say this because we had

a terrible reaction to L-taurine freeform capsules I got from the healthfood

store. I had been giving her the caplet form for about 1 year and she showed no

reaction to it but I didn't think that it was working as well as it should, so I

decided to try the freeform kind and she acted like a bat out of hell. I just

thank God that I realized that the Taurine could be the reason for this awful

behavior and once I took her off of it, she was fine after about three days.

What I'm saying is that if you give her too many at one time or too close to

each other, if she has a bad reaction to one of them, you won't know which one

is the culprit so it's best to do it slow and take your time with it just like

the meds. Good Luck!

For now I am giving her multivitamins 3 times a day, at the end of

well so we compromised on taking them with dark chocolate, which she

loves. I have taked with the pediatrician about vitamins

(especially vitamin B6 --recommended dosage for 45 lb--she gets

10mg/day now)and I got no help from him-- he does not believe this

is worth trying...

I am kind of doing this by myself, trying to read as much as i can

and put together pieces from different sources. I am not sure this

is the best way to do it. We'll be out of town the second half of

June, and I have big plans for when we come back: introduce L-

taurine, L-tyrosine, magnesium_I got the chelate form as per Dr.

Balch's book, glyconutrints, cicuta virosa, cell salts, Epson

salt baths, heavy metals oral detox. Gradually and slowly.

Does anyone know about the role of Lecithin--I got the soy all

natural granules in the tratment of epilepsy. I know it is helping

the brain, I imagine it can not hurt. I have started her on a small

dose yesterday.

I would like to elaborate on the clothing exchange just a little.

Last year when I helped to sort and size all the left overs, we came

across some sad surprises. Visible stains and obvious holes or tears.

Please check your clothes carefully before bringing them to the

Exchange. For most of us, clothing has been a real source of

psychological distress. " Nothing fits " , " Why can't they make anything

cute in my size " , " I'll buy it anyway and lose into it " . It can be a

real heartbreak to find something wonderful, get it home, and find that

it has some irrepairable problem. Thank you for your time and

consideration.

Janet,

I had no idea you were a principal of a school for the Deaf. Which one? And

that is great you have the support of the staff and the deaf kids. I'm not sure

the Deaf folks here would be supportive if they knew I was getting a CI. Since

I'm not teaching now, I just stay in contact with my closest friends there.

Being a stay at home Mom makes it hard to keep in touch with friends that work

full time.

Anyway, good luck on the surgery. Enjoy the fact you have time alone. And I

love Anne of Green Gables as well. I've only seen the first movie but I have all

of the books.

I hope to farm my daughter out for at least the first night and maybe the 2nd

night when I have the surgery. She's 8 yrs old so it is harder to farm her out

:}. She also goes to school and the family that will have her homeschools. And

she has to be driven to school: from their house it is nearly 30 mins.

So...makes it a bit complicated. Makes me wish I had family nearby other than my

elderly inlaws who can't keep her due to health issues (alzheimer's and heart

problems).

the test was all on calculations. there were 39 questions, 36 of which were

basic short calculation problems (examples, Nitroglycerin is available in a

variety of strength including 1/150 grains. what is this in mg). and three long

clac.(like finding FV or IC) problems. thanks again.
