Hey Jen,

Yes, it is the homeopath you are thinking of, but they are specifically telling me to take her to a doctor and put her on antibiotics. She just barely coughs now...looking back I do believe she had whooping cough but the remedy worked very well. But for some reason her teacher told the health dept that she was still coughing badly. I think they are lying about that...still not sure what to do but I'm keeping her home today.

Pertussis

I am wondering if anyone has any advice in this situation - my 9 year old daughter developed a cough about a month ago. At times it was severe and kept her up at night but otherwise she was fine. I kept her home from school for a few days here and there because she was too tired to go in. A couple weeks ago I had her treated by our homeopath and she is doing great now. She barely coughs at all and sleeps through the night and can run around, etc...without a coughing fit.

I just received a call from the health department saying there was a confirmed case of pertussis in her grade and my daughter was named as a close contact to this person. They are doing an investigation and were asking a ton of questions. I ended up telling them she was vaccinated because I thought that would end the discussion but she said the school reported her as being unvaxed and she wanted the dates. She also wants her to be treated by a doctor or to stay out of school for 3 weeks. Her teacher told the health department that she was still coughing a lot but she barely is at home. I am not sure what to do here...she does not even have a doctor right now.

Thanks,

Jodi

Thanks...yes, I did think about doing this too. I was hoping to find someone to just rule it out too. Our homeopath said she probably wouldn't test positive this late since she started coughing around 6 weeks ago. Maybe the health dept would give up on bothering me if a doctor said she didn't have it.

Re: Pertussis

If you can find a doctor, accept the prescription of antibiotics, fill it at the pharmacy, and then not give them to her. It's better than staying out of school for 3 weeks unnecessarily.>She also wants her to be treated by a doctor or to stay out of school for 3 weeks. This is great news. And being a Waldorf school, yes, you bet they're going to hound them all. I hope it comes up positive, too. It would be great to show the health dept that not only was it not a huge deal, but your daughter is alive and well without one vaccine.

It's also good you ended up finding the kind of doctor you want, too. What a bonus through all this madness. I think the health dept will have to accept it if it's too late for antibiotics. Otherwise they are going against their own (CDC's) guidelines! No need to keep a child out who isn't contagious, especially if everyone in the class is already done with it, too.

What state are you in? I'm going to see if I can find the law on that. It tends to be slightly different everywhere.

Hi Winnie,

I am in Wisconsin. From what I understand, they cannot make you take antibiotics but they do have the right to quarantine. Their reasoning is that any kid in the class could of been exposed at different times so just give antibiotics to all to prevent an outbreak.

I very much want the test to be positive and I really feel strongly that she had pertussis, but I also feel bad that I didn't keep her out of school during her most contagious stage. The health dept wouldn't of even been involved right now with everyone if that one kid didn't come up positive, who I think got it from my daughter. But I really didn't think her cough was that serious and she otherwise didn't seem sick at all; I thought it was bronchitis since I also used to get that every fall around her age. That is why I took her into the homeopath, but then shortly afterwards she started improving and I didn't think much more about it until the boy in her class was diagnosed and I was all of sudden being questioned about every detail of her illness. I just want it to be over! She is doing and feeling great and loves school so she feels sad that she has to stay out so long.
