Guest guest
Great loss! Congratulations. Pat one year anniversary Hi guys, I just wanted to drop a fast note as tomorrow is my 1 year anniversary and on friday is my 30th birthday. I had planned my surgery than because I had been overweight for my twenties and wanted to start my thirties happy and healthy. I am glad to say that I am accomplishing my goal. I have lost 110lbs. I have been on a plateau for a while now but I really am not even bothered by it. I think eventually a few more pounds will come off and in the mean time I am enjoying myself and my family. I have an appt. with a gastro. doc for a endoscopy next week not because I am having any symptoms but because I want some extra peace of mind that I feel well and am well. I know that a lot of people are also having anniversaries this week and next and hope everyone is doing well. Bye for now, Jen 5/24/00 255/145/

Guest guest
Jen, First of call, congratulations on losing 110 lbs!!! That is fantastic! Secondly, I know exactly what you are talking about regarding being overweight for your twenties and starting your thirties happy and healthy. My two month anniversary is on Monday and my 30th birthday is Friday as well. Happy Birthday to both of us!! I think if I hadn't already had my MGB I would be much more upset about facing the big 3 0 tomorrow! Tonya in MN (my last day as a twenty something! Guest guest
le, I think we should laminate your weight loss and frame it. I've come the the sudden revelation that there are those of us that lose 50 lbs in 6 months, and then most of us who don't. I only lost 18 lbs the first month, and listened as my littermates reported much higher numbers, but I've chilled out since then. You are proof positive that a little weight gone each month really does pile up at the end of the year. Thanks SO MUCH for posting your monthly loss, it really has helped! in VA > Hello Everyone: > > I don't post much anymore, mainly because I have such a busy, active life > these days, but I wanted to share how I am doing since today is my one-year > anniversary since my MGB. Guest guest
Wonderful!! I am so happy for you. Pat one year anniversary Hello Everyone: I don't post much anymore, mainly because I have such a busy, active life these days, but I wanted to share how I am doing since today is my one-year anniversary since my MGB. It is a special day for me and an emotional one as I reflect on how much the MGB has changed my life. Let me say first and foremost that the surgery was a miracle for me, and I am SO thankful I found Dr. R and was able to have the MGB. I have lost 103 pounds. :-) A year ago, I weighed 260 pounds and felt completely disgusted with myself. It should have been a joyful time in my life as I was only 31, had just finished my PhD, and was embarking on my career. But, my weight seemed to hamper every aspect of my life. It limited me socially, physically, emotionally, and athletically. I love to ride horses, and a year ago I would not have thought about it due to sheer embarassment -- not to mention being afraid of breaking the horse's back! Like all of you, I tried every diet on Earth only to fail and then feel even more miserable about myself. Then one day I saw a news show on TV about Carnie 's sugery. Initially, I thought " wow, that sure is drastic. " Then, a few months later (and 20 more pounds later, at my heaviest weight ever) I became desperate and decided maybe surgery was my last hope, even though (at the time) it still seemed drastic to me. I began searching on the Web, looking for Carnie 's doctors -- this led me to the obesityhelp site and I looked in NC just for the heck of it, and voila -- there was a link to Dr. R's site. At that moment, my life was changed -- I began absorbing and learning everything I could about WLS, and soon decided the MGB was the way to go. I was fortunate that Dr. R was only 75 miles from me -- but if he were 1000 miles away I still would have wanted only him to do my surgery!!! Before my MGB, my mobility was significantly decreased and I was beginning to have edema in my feet and ankles. I was also having joint pain in my knees and hips. This scared the hell out of me to be only 31 and already be having such problems. I want you to know that since the DAY of my MGB I haven't had any edema and NO joint pain -- amazing. The only side effects of surgery I had were some mild depression and decreased energy for a couple of months after surgery. However, now I have energy like I never believed possible and my self-esteem is through the roof! I feel great -- better than since I was a teenager. I did have some hair loss, but it really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be -- of course, I am blessed to have a thick head of hair anyway so even if I lost 1/3 of it it wasn't missed too much! I have had NO problems with reflux or any of that stuff. I don't take the Citrucel (sorry) -- I just can't stand it -- I do take Fiber Source chewables. I take the vitamins faithfully and I also take a B-Complex, potassium and Ginseng (which seems to really help energy). I had a physical a few weeks ago and my GP was simply amazed. He asked me many questions about what I was eating, etc. He has sent several of his patients to Dr. R, even though there is a surgeon in town who does open RNY. All of my bloodwork was perfect -- my cholesterol was 124 -- all vitamin levels were fine -- my doc was so pleasantly surprised. Today, my life is SO different from one year ago. I feel so healthy, and so good about myself. I feel like I have a " normal " relationship with food for the first time in my life. No more carbohydrate cravings or obsessing about food -- food is fuel and not much more! I actually enjoy cooking now. I can eat sweets, but one or two cookies satisfies me and I don't need the whole bag. I have never dumped, but felt a little sick a few times after eating too much sugar. I threw up once after eating fried chicken on an empty stomach (won't be doing that again). But for the most part I tolerate anything within reason and I have that " magic switch " that goes off when I've had enough. I leave food on my plate now and I trust my body to tell me when to stop. The best thing is I am so much more confident in every aspect of my life -- career, relationships, riding. I just bought a horse and I'm riding again!! I interviewed for jobs a couple months ago and felt so confident and self-assured. I have a new/old (long story for another time) Dutch boyfriend and we're probably getting engaged sometime in the next 6 months. Everything is so different, and so wonderful. I could really just go on and on. So, would I do it again? You bet. I would have the MGB every year if I had to in order to feel this good. If pre-ops have any questions for me, I'd be glad to answer them or be a contact for you. Just e-mail me privately. Here are my stats. I have lost a total of 103 pounds (still losing 4-5 pounds a month) and a total of 58 1/2 inches!! One thing I'm glad I did was keep a chart tracking my measurements. Pre-op (5/25/00) One Year Later (5/25/01) Weight 260 157 Inches Neck 15 13 Biceps 16.5 11.5 Bust 48 36 Waist 45 31 Hips 54 39 UpperThigh 32 23 Mid Thigh 27 20.5 Calf 16.5 12.5 Ankle 9.5 8.5 Size 24/26 12/14 Weight Loss Month 1 = 19 pounds Month 2 = 11 Month 3 = 12 Month 4 = 10 Month 5 = 6 Month 6 = 10 Month 7 = 7 Month 8 = 6 Month 9 = 8 Month 10 = 6 Month 11 = 2 Month 12 = 6 Thank you, thank you, thank you Dr. R for giving me my life back! Thank you so much for sharing your experience and thanks for such a wonderful recap of our progress month by month and inch by inch. It's great to have the month by month progress to refer to. Guest guest
HI a, What a great success story !!!! How wonderful that your skin has been so cooperative. I am happy for you that you could get back to your love of riding. I have always wanted to scuba dive, because I love to snorkel, but couldn't fit in a wet suit, but now I am looking forward to being fit enough and small enough to try it. Isn't life grand. Guest guest
CONGRATULATIONS SUZANNE!! Will you be at the picnic, I'd love to see you in person, or at least what's left of you!! LOL Trudy One Year Anniversary Hi to all my MGB family! I don't post often because I'm so busy with school and work and generally enjoying my new life, but I did want to post a progress report. My surgery was on July 17, 2000 and I've lost a whole person (98 lbs). I have about 30 lbs to go to reach my goal, but I would be elated if I stopped where I am because life is so much better that it was prior to the surgery. I can't begin to describe how my life and my outlook have changed. I feel genuine sympathy for the people who chose not to have this surgery because of negative comments made by certain people(who shall remain nameless) who don't seem to have the capacity to see the good that Dr. R is doing. I thank God every day for leading me to his website and the solution to a lifelong problem. I so glad to be a part of this family. Suzanne in NC mgb 7/17/00 254/156/ 125 one day! Guest guest
Congratulations Sara. How wonderful to hear how great you are doing! Here's to another great year! one year anniversary Hi Everyone, I don't post much, but I wanted to let everyone know how I am doing since today (8/2/2001) is exactly one year since I had the MGB. I weighed 255 when I had surgery, and today when I went to my doctor I weighed 141. I have lost 114 pounds in one year! My doctor is thrilled with how well I am doing, and he says I look great. I had my one year blood tests today, and I should get the results back next week. I can now do anything I want to do, but a year ago I could hardly do anything because I felt so exhausted and sick all the time. I have never thrown up since having the MGB, I have not had any bile reflux, and my acid reflux that I had before the MGB is gone. I have felt very sick (dumping syndrome, I assume) about 4 times since surgery because of having milk or too much sugar (I am now lactose intolerant, but I can eat yogurt and cheese). I take a Prilosec every day because my stomach felt a little bad for a while, but it feels fine now unless I eat something with too much fat or sugar. I always take my vitamins, Citrucel, and Tums. I also take fish oil, potassium, and have protein drinks most days. I feel good. I am very blessed. I feel that my decision to have the MGB was one of the very best decisions I have ever made. I am so thankful that I was able to have it (and that my insurance paid for most of it). I am very thankful to Dr. Rutledge. If any of my littermates are out there, I'd love to hear how you are doing. Sara Schutz 255/141 MGB 8/2/2000
Guest guest
Sara, It is so good to hear that you are doing so well. I just made an appointment for my one year tests also. I'm pretty sure everything is okay because I feel wonderful and have no bad symptoms. I have only lost 92 lbs so I'm a little envious here. I weighed 256 on the date of our surgery. My doctor is also very pleased with my progress. He spends lots of time asking all sorts of questions every time I go in. He is very interested in the surgery. I haven't had any problems either except a little nausea when I have eaten too fast or too much. I agree that the MGB is the best decision I ever made for myself also. I just spent a week on the beach and actually wore a bathing suit. It felt so wonderful. I feel as if I have been given wings and learned to fly. The sense of freedom is so overwhelming sometimes that I have to pinch myself so I know it is really true. I hope you continue to do well. It is really good to hear from you. Actually, you and your husband were the last people I saw when I was wheeled in for surgery. Thanks for being there and talking to me.
