+++Hi Clara. You don't " have to " buy virgin coconut oil, but I couldn't find

any description about their organic virgin CO, since it must be unrefined,

undeodorized, unbleached and non-hydrogenated. Maybe you could contact the

company to get that information. Otherwise I wouldn't recommend using it.

Here's a link for other good companies that have coconut oil, but you still need

to verify they are unrefined, undeodorized, unbleached and non-hydrogenated:

Here's my Mountain Rose Herb ad on my website, which helps me when you buy from

them:

Clara, their prices are good! I sent them an e-mail to ask how much it would be

to ship 1 gallon of their organic virgin coconut oil.

Nutiva charges $49.99 for 1 gallon, but that includes shipping. Many other

companies charge even more for 1 gallon, so right now I am happy with Nutiva

(their service is great too).

Some places have nice low prices, but by the time you figure in shipping,

there's not as much price difference as it originally seemed.

Actually, I've found the cheapest way to get Nutiva coconut oil is through

Amazon. They have a subscribe and save program that you can get it shipped to

you as often or as infrequently as you like and it is just under $10 (including

2 day shipping) for two 15oz cans.

Hope that helps,

Hi ,

Thank you for that tip about buying Nutiva at Amazon. Please go through the US

Amazon ad on my website so I can get some credit:

+++Hi Clara,

Virgin and extra virgin are not regulated terms, so they can be used by anyone.

Ensure their coconut oil is unrefined, undeodorized, unbleached and

non-hydrogenated, and ask them how they get the oil out of the coconut meat,

i.e. expeller pressed, or another method.

Cheers, Bee

It really isn't fair. Coconut oil is so much cheaper in the States than it is

here in the UK. I can't believe the difference in price. I could get it cheaper

from the States, but the shipping is prohibitive. Everyone is jumping on the

bandwagon now and making a 'killing' commercially. I get through so much of

this stuff and it is crippling my finances.

Alison, since there are a lot of subcontinent Indian immigrants in the UK, and

since India is a major source of coconut oil, might there be a less expensive

way to get coconut oil through an Indian food market?

The same criteria would apply to buying coconut oil from that kind of market...

Not RBD; organic; what kind of processing.

I have seen some small jars of coconut oil in one Indian market near me in the

States. It was cheap, but when I opened it up, it smelled funny, so I did not

use it.

It is awful that coconut oil would cost so much more in the UK.

I checked out their cheapest shipping costs for 1 gallon of coconut oil; it

would be between $17 and $18. Add that to their price for the 1 gallon, and it

comes to between $45 and $46.

That IS shaving a few dollars off the price of Nutiva ($49.99) which includes

shipping.

I might or might not try them in the future. However, Nutiva often gives me

one-day service, because I'm in Southern California, and they are just up a ways

in the same state.

At any rate, it's good to know that we have a variety of sources from which to

choose.

Hi, this is Angie from Az.

I purchased a 5 gal container of CO from Mountain Rose Herbs for $149.00 plus

s/h of $26.00,price per gal came to $35.00. That is a good deal and there are a

few people that want to go in with me each time I order. Instead of paying $37

for ea. gal, plus $12 s/h I now will only pay $29.80 per gal plus s/h of $5.20.

Hi Pamela, yes there are Asian food shops fairly locally and they do sell

coconut oil relatively cheaply but it is only RBD oil.

I did contact the company (KTC) and was told that the benefits of the oil are

still intact - all the fatty acids are still in it. It is apparently not

chemically extracted, but is very bland which suggests that it may at least have

been deodorised.

This is a product that is used extensively by the Asian population both here and

in India.

Maybe I will have to contact the company again and try and get more information

about the processing and what it goes through.

Thanks for your input though. Much appreciated.

Ali.

Hello Bee,

Here is their response:

" When we call something " virgin " it is unrefined in any way--so all of those

things that that you mentioned---it is non-deodorized, not bleached and

definately NOT hydrogenated--it has a natural 76 degree melt point---it still

has that coconut smell. It is COLD PRESSED - so no chemicals are used in the

pressing. "

It sounds great right?

Thank you for all the good tips, I am going to keep looking to see what its the

best deal !

+++Hi Clara. Sounds good, but virgin and extra virgin are not regulated terms.

If their products are trully unrefined they should be willing to put all of

those details on their labels and website so no one has to doubt it.

Can we choose the type of oil we order? Is it coming from Wilderness Family

Naturals?

We'd definitely like to order, I just want to make sure we can get organic :)
