Guest guest Posted April 27, 2011 Report Share Posted April 27, 2011 Hi Virginia, Basically, Niacinamide, while useful for treating osteoarthritis, doesn't have the same vasodialating, or blood-vessel widening, effects, that niacin has. Because of the flush it's recommended that you start out slow and build up. This is a good site that will explain everything: http://www.doctoryourself.com/niacin.html You can find niacin on line. To start out low just type in 50mg niacin. It's very inexpensive. Carlson labs is good. Just be sure to NOT get what's called the no-flush niacin as that won't have the effect you want. You can also get it in 25mg but I would just cut the 50mg. tabs in half to start out with. And always take it after a meal. My latest labs show my cholesterol to be Triglycerides are 458 and HDL is 35. The report says it can't accurately calculate my LDL because the Triglycerides are so high. The doc wants me on 2000mg/day of niacin and gave me a script for Gemfibrozil 600mg/day. I know there's some debate about cholesterol and triglycerides. Guest guest Posted April 28, 2011 Report Share Posted April 28, 2011 I used this for about 6 weeks and of course on a very strict diet , and had bloodwork done and cholesterol was in " safe range " .( this was about 12 years ago) Also Exercise is very important , my best friend in Holland just has been through all of this , she had a heart attack and was diagnosed with Diabetes II , she does not tolerate any statin drugs . Cholesterol was 'way bad' in spite of max doses of statins. Then I quit and adopted a Low Carb High Fat regime. Within 3 months I was off my insulin pump, 3 moths later I was off my meds. My cholesterol is now as good as it can get. I'm 66 now and my BP is 130/70 my blood sugar levels are those of a non diabetic. To this day I cannot understand the powers that motivate the collusion between the establishment, government policy and the monetary power of the pharmaceutical industry. Obviously there is a money motivation for the individuals involved and therein lies the motivation to keep people ill and promote expensive chemical products mostly in pill form which nonetheless are derived from nature anyway. The morality and ethics involved could well be the next war concerning the greedy collusion of the tiny percentage of rich people who control our lives. French revolution? Sorry, I digress and I rant. Here's the thing. Having done the LCHF wol the first year I was totally amazed by my improved health and loss of weight as indeed was my doctor. My diabetes nurse just got angry as I was doing the opposite of everything she had been told and exclaimed that I would become seriously ill if I continued - that was at least 3 years ago and I feel great! I also found that I could indulge a taste or two of a midsummer new potato or some dark chocolat and other treats without it efecting my BS levels, so now I am on a sort of relaxed LCHF regime but maintaining my weight loss and my blood sugar levels - without medication. This LCHF regime has resulted in me now never being hungry - wierd. I have my routines, Bacon, Eggs, and the occasional tomato for breakfast. I must admit that then that's it sometimes it for the day - but I'm just not hungry so why stuff my face? I used to weigh 130 kilos, I'm only 5'5 " so that was a lot, now and I weigh a steady 82 kilos though as I get older I have decided to lose a bit more I will go down to 75 before next winter - that's the plan anyway. All my blood work results are great and my blood pressure is 130/70 which I'm told is good all things considered. Well, heres the thing. If anybody reading this is not feeling too good then give it a go- it's a doddle compared with stopping smoking or whatever and you will feel results in just a few days. I take vitamin D supplements because I don't get much sun up here and I enjoy my home made wine and moonshine. My improved health is based on simple logic. If we are to accept the theory of evolution then we have evolved chronologically which means that it's about 5 seconds before midnight evolutionary wise. Less than a minute ago we discovered how to grow grain which filled our tummies and meant we didn't have to charge around hunting and gathering. The problem is that we don't do very well on fast carbohydrates as indeed our farm animals don't either. It's just fact.
