Guest guest
Hello. I am new to this list. I have been making CP soap for several years and have had a small business selling soap since 1997. I recently started making some additional products including lotion, lip balm, and lotion bars so I hoped this list might offer me some guidance on those toiletries that are new to me. I live in San , Texas, and have a husband and two children ages 6 to 8. I also work part-time as a housing consultant for a non-profit neighborhood revitalization agency. I have a question regarding lotions. How do you get the lotion into the individual bottles. I have tried spooning, funneling, and today using a lotion pump to try to pump the lotion from the mixing bowl to the bottles. It sort of worked but gave me a read sore hand. The only thing I can think of is to get a big gallon plastic container with a pump like used for ketchup or mustard, mix the lotion in the container, and use the pump to pump it into the bottles. Is this what everyone else does or have I missed some other solution? Then is there an easy way to wash out the pump to use with another batch. Thanks very much for your help. Guest guest
Debbie, what I do is funnel it into a squeeze type of bottle when its warm, and then keep it in the refrigerator, when its time to make an individual bottle, i squeese some into the bottle, add the fo or eo, and then shake it up realy good. then let it settle back down then continue to fill the bottle and shake some more. Then Wala! its done except for the labeling. The bowl i mix it in has a spout so it is easier to pour. Have a good one!! It's kind of like using a pastry bag to decorate a cake. HTH in FL
Guest guest
What I've used in the past is a veterinarian's syringe. The one that I have holds 8 oz. at a time, and works quite well. It gets to be a pain if you are filling more than ... 30 or 40 at a time (my hand got stiff bigtime!) but you know exactly how much is in each bottle. I usually put lotions in the bottle unscented, then add scent as I run out of each kind along with a clear marble, to help mix it in. I've thought about investing in one of the little battery run whips that bartenders use (don't know for what, have just seen them in the liquor stores) but haven't yet. I use my cookie press. Its the gun type. Simply put the long needle attachment on the end and shoot away. Fills up bottles with just a couple of presses. Guest guest
You may want to try using a 8 oz or 16 oz stroke pump for you gallon containers. We us a stainless steele version make specifically for thicker liquids that fills 8 oz and 16 oz bottles fairly quickly. China Whipped Creme 14 oz. Distilled Water 4 oz. Oil ( your choice ) I used Almond 1.5 oz. Emulsifying Wax 1.2 oz. Stearic Acid .8 oz Citric Acid .2 oz Germaben II .1 oz. Fragrance Oil / Essential Oil 2 Drops Color All items used to make cream should be sterilized Combine over double boiler water and Citric Acid heat till it's totally melted, then add all ingredients except fragrance, color, and Germaben II. When the mixture turns creamy color pour into a blender and whip off and on till it cools ( this can take quite a while ). I usually whip it for 5 minutes let it cool 10 minutes. Add remaining ingredients and whip some more. You don't want it to get so cool that you cant pour it, this will thicken in jars as it cools more. Makes approximately 20 ounces of cream. -- ----<--<@ ----<--<@ The Soapery Handcrafted Castile Soaps
Guest guest
Ash I make my own lotions, salves, lip balms, soap and bath oils etc. It's great. You need something - you just whip it up!! You need a gift - you just whip it up!! It IS just a tad expensive to get started (not TOO bad, though) But once you have all your supplies on hand - it turns out to be way more economical, fun and self satisfying. If all you want to make are lotions your start up costs won't be so bad. If you need some help or recipes, let me know! deb in MI roman@... Guest guest
Hi, I know of a few suppliers that carry a nice, unscented base =) go to: Craft Express (they only sell the lotion base in 5 gallons, but it's a great price)- http://store./craft-store/lotions.html Essentials by Catalina (they have it unscented, scented and colored, etc, and they sell it by the gallon)-http://www.essentialsbycatalina.com/index.html Or you can go to mangobutter.com and you can search and find many companies that carry unscented lotion bases. Guest guest
> Hello all, I got some lotion ready made and it is to thick. What can I ues > to thin it out ? Help please. It is very simple. Just add more distilled water. Whenever I get a lotion that is too thick, I just add more water. In fact the recipe that I use all of the time only calls for 6 ounces of water and when it is cool it is too thick to come out of the bottle, so when I make it I add around 14 ounces of distilled water and get a nice smooth lotion that will come out of the bottle and a pump easy. Hope this helps you; Raven

Guest guest
Hi, Raven I would love to have the recipe you use for lotion as mentioned below. I do not know how to email you. thanks so much.
