I'm sort of in the same place as although I don't go by WW. I basically

eat whatever I want at this point but try to keep my fat intake low. Fat

doesn't appeal much anyway.I still don't do well on chicken or meat so I

concentrate on fish when I'm in a restaurant and that works well to get

protein.

I think its the combination of not absorbing fat (from the MGB) and small

intake. Some days I " think " I've overeaten and then when I write down what I

ate its miniscule.

It took me about 6 months before I felt like I understood how to eat for my

new body. And my weight has come off exactly according to the charts.

evelyn, that's 20 lbs in 5 months??????? I don't feel that I have done as

well also, in 10 months I went from an all time high of 286, day of surgery

280 and today 199 and have been at that for two months with no losses, in

fact, if I have a bad day, I'll be 201. I need to diet and exercise now and

I am gearing myself up for that. When will it ever end????????? I am kind

of depressed today with this situation. All the old defeated thoughts are

back full force and my self esteem is hurting very badly also. I don't know

why others have done so well and I haven't. Not everyone dieted and

exercised religiously. I am feeling that looser feeling again and I don't

like it. I guess I am having a pity party for myself.

still love that good old crisp fat. I wish the good ol' MGB took it from me

as it did you. I think that is great for you!! Disliking fat is obviously

much more to your benefit. I still like my fat and must confess that I

occasionally indulge. And I don't think that is to my benefit. Anyway, I

am glad for you. And I hope it doesn't change as time goes on.

Try not and consider monitoring your eating habits as a diet. I simply try

and journal my eating so that I have a handle on exactly what I am eating.

If it not out of line then no " dieting " is necessary but you have to write

it down honestly and see exactly what you are consuming in a day. I was

amazed to see that at the end of a normal day I am well within my Weight

Watchers points range - I expected to be way below with the amount of food I

eat on a " normal " day. I do have days when I am under - you know those

non-hungry days - but most days I am right where I need to be. I don't ever

feel deprived because through WW I have learned good and tasty things to eat

when I want a snack and am able to have some of whatever I want - the great

news is with my MGB stomach I don't want much! I don't every feel that I am

dieting but I have a firm belief that with the help of WW (and the

exercising which is something I have yet to make a habit unfortunately) I

will make it to my goal - with a little help from my MGB!

Hang in there - you will find your way!

Thanks for the advice , I know that my issues are emotional eating and

I am even in therapy. I think writing what I am eating could be a good

exercise and may help me to confront this eating issue. I wish the Dr.

could have operated on my brain when he did the stomach!!!!

The same is true with me. Really greasy potato chips I can't eat

anymore, but french fries go down real well! I just can't eat many.

Despite this, I've still lost 80 lbs. in 6 mos.!

Hi Snicketmom,

Lately, my fatty foods in a day have included a shake I sip on through the

It's absolutely impossible to give a specific recommendation to follow as the

" ideal " for everyone. It depends on your individual biochemistry, your sex,

your lifestyle, your size, and your goals. No one should be eating less than

60 grams of protein a day, and most people shouldn't be eating under 60 grams

of carbs in a day. Most people would, generally speaking, be served well by

eating .75 g protein per 1 pound of bodyweight (this is just to give a general

idea, not something to bother with calculating). People who are weight

training to build muscle should probably be eating much more, at least 1 gram,

maybe

even 2, per pound of body weight.

In general, keep your protein around 20% of your calories. Disease-free,

healthy traditional societies and tribal groups that have been studied have had

widely varying intakes of carbohydrates and fat, but have all been found to

have about 15-20% of calories from protein. Fat runs 30-80% in these societies,

and the balance from carbs.

If you are weight training and want to build muscle, you may want to up your

protein to 30% of your calories. Otherwise, around 20%, 30% minimum for fat,

and the rest carbs.

One person's moderation is another's excess and another's deficiency. Adjust

your fat and carbohydrate levels to find what makes you feel best, and then

stick with that. All that is important is that you do this experimenting

without preconceived notions of what is " too much fat " or " too much carbs " or

whathaveyou. If you feel great, your health improves, keep doing what you're

doing.

With caveats. Whole grains if not properly prepared can give you mineral

deficiencies beyond small amounts. All grains, nuts, legumes, and seeds contain

sprout inhibitors which are phytate to bind minerals or enzyme inhibitors.

The best way to get rid of these is sprouting, but they can also be soaked in an

acidic medium or fermented. Examples of sprouted grains include Ezekiel

bread and Manna bread. Of lesser but good quality would be Shiloh Farms and

Alvorado St. Most health food stores and some supermarkets carry these brands.

Sometimes you can get not only bread, but bagels, hamburger and hot dog buns,

english muffins, etc, made from sprouted whole grains. (I think they taste much

better than regular whole grains anyway.

Sprouting also produces some vitamin C and increases the B vitamin content.

On the other hand, gluten grains (wheat, barley, rye, oats) are a problem for

some people, and if you have any reason to believe you are gluten intolerant

you should be tested, and in such a case that you are found positive should

not eat any gluten grains, regardless of whether you are producing symptoms.

(Some gluten intolerant people think small amounts are fine, and then their

" first " symptom is cancer.)

No, it grows in the sea, and is fussy what it absorbs. It concentrates

the good stuff, just like land plants concentrate stuff from the soil:

Sea salt is 85% sodium salt.

Nori has 20g sodium in a 3g serving - so it is 0.66% sodium salt.

Sea salt is 1% potassium salt.

Nori has 74mg potassium in a 3 g serving - so it is 2.46% potassium salt.

steak, wild mushroom (are those also weeds?) and dandelion greens. I

Irene, I keep hoping one of these days I'll find dandilion greens in the grocery

store. Right now I can only get them when they come up in my yard. I try to get

them when they first come up and soak them well to get the dirt and any

chemicals that might have spread from my husbands burmuda grass hay, when he

sprays. Usually it doesn't seem to blow in the yard, but I'd rather be safe.

I think cheese & nuts are discouraged for folks who are trying to cut fat,

but otherwise nuts are a very healthy source.

- natural peanut butter

- avocado

- nuts in your salads

- extra virgin olive oil to your salads or vegetables

- salmon

- whole fat cheese (still in moderate portion sizes, but whole fat rather

than partskim or reduced fat or non-fat)

I doubt that adding some of this to your daily menus will bring back all of

your weight. I don't know about you, but I didn't gain my excess weight by

overeating avocados and salmon.

Actually, nuts and lowfat cheese are both on the list of authorized

healthy fats. The whole thing goes:

Avocado

Sunflower seeds

Pumpkin seeds

Cold-water fish

Natural peanut butter

Low-fat cheese

Low-fat salad dressing

Low-sodium nuts

Olives and olive oil

Safflower oil

Canola oil

Sunflower oil

Flax seed oil

You should definitely get some more healthy fats in your diet. Even

20% fat is pretty low. I shoot for more like 25-30%. Important

" beautiful bride " factors like soft radiant skin, shiny hair, and

strong nails have to do with the amount of healthy fat in your diet.

It also helps your fitness results by reducing carb cravings,

improving fat metabolism, boosting immune function, lubricating

joints, improving cholesterol levels and lots of other great benefits.

Don't shortchange yourself.

Tara,I find it really tough to keep my fat that low, there is a

tendency for it to creep into the 25% territory. The biggest food

contributors to fat are: salmon, hummous (I mix it with tuna, tastes

great and adds some healthy fats/beans), flax oil (1Tbs)/ground flax(2-

3Tbs), string cheese, a bit of olive oil on my salad, handful of

almonds. You need to have enough healthy fats to help prevent dry

skin, dry hair, as well as a host of other problems.

By the way, there is nothing wrong with eating a few nuts. 7 almonds

is only about 50 calories and is a pretty good portion you can add to

salads or have with a snack. It is the healthy fat that you want to

get. I can see omitting string cheese because it is saturated fat,

but boy it is tasty & convenient! lol

Tara, for you that IS too low. Nuts or cheese would be a good way to

increase.

Remember, you are trying to gain not only muscle mass but some BF% as

well. You need to eat more than you are.

One of the early BFL winners (a man, but still) was in the same

possition you are, wanting to bulk up. I don't remember his name, but

he's a black guy from the early years (you should be able to find him

on the web site) and I think he wrote a book about gaining the healthy

way. Look into that. I know that you are fighting with not falling

into obsessive eating, so maybe reading about someone else's efforts

to gain will help you see that it is OKAY to eat enough to fule your body.

Turquoise and clear plastic wrapping. Tastes better than string cheese to me.

I remember you saying that you wanted to finish the UDO's capsules

that you bought but it might be easier to just " bite-the-bullet " and

give up on them. I think you have to take a LOT of those things to

equal just one T of the oil. One T of UDO's has 14.5 g of fat.

Believe me, that will bump your fat % up there in a heart beat...and

it's the good stuff!

How does anyone possibly consume 15-20% fat? I have the opposite

question...I have been logging everything in Fitday and find that I

am consistently over 30% fat. Usually in the 30-40 range.

I don't do Udo's, but I do cook my egg whites in a teaspoon of

camola oil and take a teaspoon of flax oil 2-3 times a day. I make

large salads dressed with a teaspoon of olive oil. Most of my fats

are healthy but with the incidental fat in some low fat foods and

the teaspoon here and there of flax, olive oil, and canola I am

taking in some serious fat grams. Is this making sense to anyone?

If it's healthy fat I assume it's OK, provided I am not consuming a

lot of calories, but I don't want to be crowding out protein or

carbs.

Should I cut out some fat or stay where I am?
