Join the Army - and get big breasts

by The Londoner

All those snaps in the celebrity mags of Posh Spice, Pamela et al

with their surgically-enhanced breasts must be having an impact on the

Armed Forces.

Images of celebrities such as Pamela may have influenced

servicewomenAccording to the MoD, at least four servicewomen are known to

have had breast implant operations at the Services' Royal Hospital Haslar

in Hampshire since 1 January, 2000.

However, the total number of implant operations carried out annually in

military wards at NHS hospitals across the country is likely to be far

higher.

" There are no central records of the total number of servicewomen who have

had breast implant operations, " explains the MoD.

The Ministry stresses that such surgery is only carried out for clinical

reasons and is consistent with national NHS practice. " If there is an

over-riding psychological reason, it would make good sense, " an MoD

spokesman adds.

So, for example, a 27-year-old corporal had a £2,500 breast enlargement

courtesy of the Army in 1994, to make her " a happier soldier " . However,

with the news this week that the MoD is considering cutting up to 10

infantry and armoured regiments, some are surprised that it is spending

money on such surgery.

" It's ridiculous, " said shadow defence secretary Iain Duncan . " I

find it bizarre that there can be any connection between breast implants

and fighting capability - it gives a whole new meaning to the words

'second front'. "
