Guest guest
Dear - I have been diagnosed with flatback and also have knee problems. I never connected the two (my knee problems seem insignificant compared to my back pain, so I have never mentioned it to my doctors), but I have seen several other posts here talking about knee problems. I believe the way in which the rod/fusion affects our posture puts undue pressure on the knees. mary b leg problems Hi All, though I have not been officially diagnosed, I am sure I have flatback. (Harrington Rods, double curve) I have nerve damage due to surgery. Had torn cartledge in my knee that had to be fixed a couple of years ago. Lately, I have had some knee pain again, tingling down the leg, but mostly fairly normal stuff. Today I fell twice going up stairs because I don't think my leg moved as well as it used to. Maybe I'm just clumsy. Anyway, It's always the same leg with the problems. Anyone have similar issues? Thanks - and God Bless -
Guest guest
Hi , I too, have flatback (Harrington rods in 1966 at the age of 12) and experience terrible problems with my legs and knees. While I have not seen an ortho about this particular pain, I have talked to my Pain Mgmt. Dr. and read extensively on this. One of the main reasons the knee problems are so prevelent in flatback sufferers is we usually stand, walk, etc. with our knees bent to help relieve the pain in our backs. Years of standing with our knees bent will sooner or later take a toll on the knee joint. I also have a lot of pain in my legs, ankles and hips. One thing I have found helps me with my knee is to wear a brace (the sort that basketball and other sports players wear) on my knee when I am walking or standing for any length of time. My husband picked a couple up for me at the local sporting goods store (I think they were only about $15-$20) I hope this has been of some help. Guest guest
Hi Matt, None of us can tell what is medically going on with your legs but having had those symptoms myself, I can suggest things to check out with your doctor, or if available, a doctor who has had multiple successful experiences treating people with achondroplasia. Two things that came to my mind when reading your e-mail are 1. that the cartilage in your knee may be wearing away which would cause numbness in your knee and the areas above and below it, and 2. that your experiencing stenosis which is when the spinal column impinges on the spinal cord. Each of these have completely different treatments. I've had both problems and I underwent leg straightening for item #1, and I underwent a laminectomy for item #2. My primary suggestion would be to first contact a doctor familiar with dwarfism. If you e-mail the list with where you live, you might receive some names of doctors that others have used. I hope this helps. If you have any questions, please write again. Guest guest
> > Bee or anyone else, > > I have been battling leg issues since I started the diet. At times they will be heavy than they will be so tired and unsteady I think I'm going to tip over. They will also ache, throb, and feel like they are vibrating. Sometimes I will have all these symptoms in one day. The bottom of my feet will also feel so swollen/sensitive they hurt to walk on. Is this simply die off toxins? Thank you. > +++Hi Shaila. Guest guest
My son, , is in a brace and has been for a while now. He complains frequently about his legs, foot and the little spot right behind your ankle. I have never taken him to the doctor because it does usually go away. Most of the time it is during th night. He will wake up crying. I always felt it was growing pains. I usually give him Motrin. Let me know what the doctor says. I am curious. Guest guest
Hello, My son also had this issue. The ortho doc said it was just growing pains and not to worry. He did even limp for awhile and I was very concerned. The peditrican took x-rays, but didn't see anything. I had the ortho check the x-rays too and he wasn't concerned. My son has been an off-and-on toe-walker though so they thought perhaps he was just going through a phase with the limping as well. They had me give him Ibprophen and said to follow-up in a month if it didn't stop. Sure enough about a month later he was walking normal again. The pain complaints continued though off and on for quite awhile though (I can't remember how long, but I want to say the complaints lasted about a year.) He's 4 now and never complains anymore. I think you're doing the right thing though by seeing the doc. Good luck and let us know what you find out.~Noah 4 1/2 years old9 months of casting in SLC; 2 1/2 years of bracing; Currently treatment-free at 8*And Mariella 16 months old - resolved Infantile Scoliosis infantile scoliosis treatment From: ryanswalk@...Date: Wed, 16 Jun 2010 03:33:09 -0700Subject: Re: Leg Problems My son, , is in a brace and has been for a while now. Guest guest
Thanks for replying. My daughter was seen by her doctor yesterday and he thought that the brace was too long and perhaps pinching a nerve. The brace was shortened a bit and this morning she was still limping a bit. But by the afternoon she seemed a whole lot better. The other good news is that the doctor is going to keep her at least one more month in the brace since there were no changes in the curve. She was really excited about that since she starts swimming classes in a few weeks. > > > Hello, > > My son also had this issue. The ortho doc said it was just growing pains and not to worry.
