Guest guest
Dear Vilik, I have the book and followed its recommendations for some months back in 1995. I was not impressed with it. The celiac disease did not markedly change. Only when I had Bicom treatments (like Voll) did I get a really noticeable change for the better. Best of Health! Guest guest
Sounds like just another name for any of the 'Atkins-like', high protein, low-carb diets, to me. > SCD > > Dear Friends, > > I have stumbled across the most interesting information about > a diet called the Selective Carbohydrate Diet based on the > research of Dr. Gottschall. Guest guest
SCD stands for Strict Carbohydrate Diet and allows NO grains. It does allow some milk products, but only those that are fermented (regular yogurt doesn't cut it, you have to ferment your own for at least 24 hours I think.) What few baked goods are on the diet are made from nut flours, pimarily almond flour. Karyn Seroussi and just coordinated an informal study to look at the GFCF versus SCD diets and its effects on kids. They used a casien free version of the SCD diet. Search on the net for " Breaking the Vicious Cycle " and you'll find a website dedicated to discussions of the diet. There is also a group for it as well. cs

Guest guest
Hi All, I am gearing up to launch into the SCD again on the advice of Dr Usman. Who is doing it? Is it Sharon...Maybe you could help me...We tried it before and was a bit high especially when eating almond muffins. However, we have NEVER really tackled yeast issues directly (except enzyme usage and probiotics) so I wonder if that was the problem then. We didnt stay on it for long maybe about 3-4 weeks then we started to see Dr Danzcak who advised against it and we decided to see if he could help us. I would like to bake some bread substitute and try again with the almonds because now takes extra enzymes and maybe we wont have that problem now. I have BTVC and have read that and tried only the recipes from there. I know about pecanbread.com so will check that out again too. Does anyone have a recipe I could try or any advice about starting out? It would be much appreciated. Kind Reagrds Caroline in Aberdeenshire PS Where do you buy ground nuts from. I have only seen small packs in both Asda and Sainsburys can you get a big load from somewhere if she reacts OK to them this time?? TIA
Guest guest
Hi Caroline, Yes we do SCD, the dairy free version (though I am increasingly thinking of giving goats milk yoghurt a go - coconut milk just doesn't do it). Not much of a baker I'm afraid, so you'd be better off checking out pecanbread site for that. The only baking I do everyday is the muffins. My kids have these for breakfast. We use almond flour (organic ground almonds) 2.5kg bags from Infinity Foods, Brighton. Our local Health Food Store (Food for Thought) orders the bags in for me and charges £26.50. My hubby (bless him) makes chicken nuggets and fish fingers coated in almonds for my boy and we freeze them, also almond pancakes and he also uses almonds as filler in meatballs and, occasionally when the energy level is up, he will make sausages. Otherwise its very Atkins ie straight meat and veg, bolognaise (great for smuggling in extra veggies)and lots of fruit and coconut milk/honey ice cream (home-made). Diet is heavy on almonds so I'm lucky he tolerates them well. Not all do. They are high phenol apparently. Also many children don't digest them well to start with either. We HAD been treating for yeast for ages before going SCD. Even then, Owen had one mother of a die-off reaction, so beware! But the prize was big improvements in the poo department - much higher percentage of formed stools and much less foul, a great relief all round. His BMs were such a state before going SCD it keeps me motivated to continue. We just couldn't go back to the way it was before. Hope this helps. I'm sure others will chip in with their own experiences. Sharon (who is still smilling a the thought of Sam chatting away to Mandi tonight!! > Hi All, > I am gearing up to launch into the SCD again on the advice of Dr Usman. Who > is doing it? Guest guest
Hi Sharon, This seems a tad expensive for almond flour, ours costs £5 per Kg at a local asian store. There is somewhere else you can buy in bulk (if you have freezer space) and they deliver, I'll dig it out for you. It's a company that supplies all the cereal makers, but as a favour supplies all the scd'ers as well - I got the address from group 'scduk' a while back. I also bought some unblanched ground almonds from them at one point to make almond milk! Mark > > Hi All, > > I am gearing up to launch into the SCD again on the advice of Dr > Usman. Guest guest
Hi Caroline, We also do SCD but I don't use almond flour as even with No Fenol Joe still reacts. I use cashew nuts which are low in sals. I can't buy cashew nut flour so I buy the raw nuts and grind them up in the food processor. It is not as hard as it sounds I am no wonder chef. It is quite noisy though guaranteed to send Joe running for cover with his hands over his ears! I think the raw nuts work out about £10 a kg but you can buy smaller bags in any supermarket. I probably get through about 250g a day, maybe less.Joe probably eats more nuts than he should. I like the cashew nut butter muffins which are made with banana,I think the recipe is on the pecanbread website, they are really easy to make and taste really nice, much better than gfcf stuff.I also make some biscuits using cooked pear and green beans and cashew nuts,I can give you the recipe if you like but they're not as nice as the muffins. You could probably make some kind of flat bread with the recipe though. I don't bother with bread anymore just use the biscuits instead. I had already eliminated alot of stuff from Joe's diet before we started SCD,he never liked potatoes except crisps,so it was really just corn I had to pull (major withdrawals) so we did it all at once and did 2 days on the intro diet that pecanbread recomend. After that we waited a week before introducing nut butters. It was a long week, trust me, with Joe starving all the time,he would eat a whole chicken every day, it cst me a fortune! Even now 10 months on I still grind the cashews into nut butter rather than nut flour. If you use a food processor it doesn't clog anything up. Hope this helps, Good luck
Guest guest
It's very important that ground almonds are fresh as the fats will oxidise fast after grinding. Suggest ensuring your supply is very very fresh and that it is then frozen in small batches for use as needed later. Margaret
Guest guest
Hi Kay > > Do you still allow Honey in your diet when treating Yeast or do you > cut down the amount in the recipes? I cut the honey down to an absolute minimum, maybe 1/4 of the recipe amount, depending on the taste. I haven't made the tomato sauce so can't help there. Can > you just coat chicken pieces with egg and dip in Nut Flour? Yes, I made some with nut flour mixed with garlic and pepper, they were really nice, Joe didn't eat them though! Could > you just do the same with fish for Fish Fingers? I guess so. > > Also fruit plays a major part in the diet but again with Yeast > issues do you still just limit it to Pears? I also give Joe golden delicious apples, and cook with over ripe bananas and mango. On gfcf he didn't have any fruit at all in the end, his yeast is no worse now, comes and goes. I give enzymes as well though, which must help. > How well do things like the Muffins freeze, as I like to batch cook > wherever possible? > They freeze fine, > Can anyone help me by letting me know where they get the dry curd > cheese from? > I don't think you can buy it in the UK. You can make goat yoghurt and use that as a substitute, I think. If you haven't already, look at the pecanbread website, the recipes there are more child friendly than BTVC. Hope this helps
Guest guest
Hi Many thanks for the info. I have been busy trying some more recipes and Louis is just gobbling them up! Still not sure whether to commit totally to SCD or just to use nutflour wherever I can to try to keep the carbs down in an attempt to keep the yeast down. Don't seem to be seeing any improvements re fighting the Yeast, we are in week 7 of giving Nystatin, and still lots of negatives especially with the sleeping or the lack of it! Anyway thanks for your help. Regards Kay. > >> > . Guest guest
My son was a child who crossed over from GF/CF to SCD. I saw gains on GF/CF but his clostridia levels went through the roof and that's when I learned that rice feeds yeast (we replaced milk with rice milk). That's when I learned the wonders of SCD (minus IGG food allergies). Your children are showing some really nasty fungal and bacterial issues... so the good news is that SCD will probably do great things for you. I would also get on an antifungal like Diflucan asap. - Stan > > Hi Everyone > while attending the DAN conference a few weeks back, I realized how much I need to clean > up my children's diet. Guest guest
There are so many posts that I can't keep everyone straight. Sorry. As for responding. If you are doing it on the web use the REPLY option in the upper left corner of the message. Steph SCD to steph - yes, I mentioned in my first post that SCD is only thing that's helped me. I started that in Nov. 2002. Not sure best way to post to continue a thread. I tried "reply to sender" on your last post re: BTVC and SCD, but it just put your email address in a new email, and didn't think that was right. I'm also a tooth soap user x 6 months
Guest guest
What is the difference between the SCD diet and Bee's candida diet?
Guest guest
Hi there, Welcome to Bee's group! Can you tell us your name so we know who we are responding to? From what I can tell, the SCD allows many of the foods that feed candida. A big one that comes to mind is honey! That will feed candida like crazy - yikes! Besides, sugar, even in very small amounts, can really trigger some people's sweet tooth, making it even harder to remain on a low carb diet. The SCD also recommends bad oils which are damaging to the body. Bee recommends a high fat diet (using good, saturated fats) so the body goes into ketosis. I'm not sure that the SCD does that. Bee also recommends important supplements that the body requires for healing. I can't tell from the SCD website what they recommend, so I can't comment on that. I guess to get a really in depth answer, you would have to do a content analysis of both diets. These are just a few things come to mind right now. Here is a list of the foods allowed on Bee's diet and the supplements list. Her diet is more restrictive than the SCD, but for good reason. http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/articles/foodslist.php http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/articles/supp1.php Hope that answers your question, > > What is the difference between the SCD diet and Bee's candida diet? >
