Getting back to my posts on natural Anti-virals, here is some good info on Coconut Oil. (Who'da thunk?) See http://www.coconut-info.com/ and be sure to check out the links. I have used coconut milk, bought from Trader Joe's and it is pretty tasty, but have never tried the coconut oil.....yet.....

Coconut oil contains lauric acid which is converted by the body into monolaurin. The action attributed to monolaurin is that of solubilizing the lipids, in the envelope of the virus, causing the disintegration of the virus envelope. Enig, MS (Nutritional Sciences), Ph.D., has done extensive research on trans-fatty acids. She wrote that some of the pathogens inactivated by monolaurin include HIV, measles, herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus (CMV), influenza virus and pneumonovirus, as well as several bacteria. Lark Lands, Ph.D. reports in her upcoming book "Positively Well" that, in India, coconut oil is fed to calves to treat cryptosporidium. Mark Konlee in Positive Health News (Report No. 14) reports on coconut products and lauric acid research as well as how it has been reported to resolve neuropathy in a few instances.

Dr. Enig suggests a rich lauric acid diet would contain about 24 grams of lauric acid daily for the average adult. This is based on her calculations on the amount of lauric acid found in human mother’s milk. The daily amount (24 grams) could be found in about 3.5 tablespoons of coconut oil or 10 ounces of pure coconut milk. About 7 ounces of raw coconut daily would contain 24 grams of lauric acid.

In his report Mark Konlee gives ideas on how to use raw coconut, coconut milk or oil. If you are allergic to coconuts, you may use coconut oil . The allergy is caused by proteins in the coconut, not the oil. He also describes other uses for coconut oil such as for skin rashes, fungal infections and plantar warts. Abram Hoffer MD in "The Facts About Fats" recommends using a certified organic coconut oil such as that distributed by Jarrow Formulas. It is made by Omega Nutrition, Bellingham, Washington, and is packaged in opaque containers. Since the demand for organic coconut oil is often greater than the supply, as long as the coconut oil is natural and not hydrogenated, it should still work even if not certified organic.

Coconut Oil as Medicine

Coconut oil's potential uses in the field of medicine have been around for decades. In a paper entitled "Coconut Oil: An Anti-bacterial, Anti-viral Ingredient for Food, Nutrition, and Health" presented by Dr. G. Enig, a nutrition expert from land, at the AVOC (ASEAN Vegetable Oils Club) Lauric Oils Symposium in Manila in October 1997, the capability of coconut oil to fight some disease-causing microorganisms like bacteria and viruses have been discussed. Her review on the various studies done on the subject has attributed these coconut oil's properties to the medium chain fatty acids that it contains. It particularly singles out lauric acid and monolaurin as the most important and most effective component of coconut oil. Coconut oil contains as much as 46% lauric acid, which is why it is called lauric oil. When coconut oil is ingested, the report says, the digestive tract naturally manufactures from the lauric oil a monoglyceride called monolaurin. In the fields of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), Dr. Enig's paper discussed some documented reports, from an AIDS activist group called Keep Hope Alive, on the use of coconut in the treatment of HIV+AIDS. The report said that the intake of coconut meat, coconut oil and coconut milk have dramatically reduced the viral load count of HIV/AIDS patients from a very high level before the treatment. One of the several cases that was cited was a patient who included coconut in his daily diet (consumed as half a fresh coconut as cooked cereal every day) that resulted in the drastic lowering of his viral load count to non-detectable level from over 600,000 in two months and a half.
