Guest guest
I had a doctor's appointment today. He had read the info I sent him on flatback and stated that he did not feel competent to make a diagnosis. He has referred me to a Dr. Harvell in Greenville, NC. Someone please send me the website listing scoliosis doctors so I can see if he's on the list. I already know that if I am diagnosed with flatback, I will go to one of the 6 doctors that are experienced in doing the surgery. Here are some other questions I need advice on. When my doctor's nurse called Dr. Harvell's office to make the appointment, she told them I wanted to find out if I had flatback syndrome. The response was, What's that? Should I send them copies of the information I have on flatback syndrome? I explained that it was a condition developed by people that had scoliosis surgery years ago. I told them I had surgery when I was 12 and that I hadn't had any x-rays done in 20 years. They asked, Do you still have scoliosis? I said, I don't know how to answer that question. I honestly don't know what curvature I may still have. How do I explain it to them? I also plan to let them know that I have osteoporosis and that I'm concerned about the rod staying in place. I have had a lot of pain off and on recently. The pain is located when the rod ends in my lumbar region. I'm wondering if something is going wrong in that area. I appreciate all the advice I know you all will share with me! Peggy Greene JPG Unlimited Antiques & Collectibles jpgreene@...
Guest guest
Hi Peggy... You'll find the list of SRS members at: http://www.srs.org/htm/mbrlst/mbrlst.htm I would be worried about a scoliosis doctor who didn't know about flatback. However, it's entirely possible that the message never got to the doctor. I don't think it would help or hurt to bring him any information you have, as he either knows about flatback already, or you don't want him as your doctor. I do not have the answer to the question " do you still have scoliosis. " I've never quite known how to answer that myself. When people ask what's wrong with my spine, I never know quite how to answer. I think that the technical answer would be that we still have scoliosis. Good luck with your appointment. Guest guest
I agree with . I think you would be best served by finding someone that knows what flatback syndrome is because you may be mis- diagnosed. I remember that I went to my ex-family doctor who I asked if he ever heard of flat back syndrome. He said " I don't need to know about it, you seem to be the only one in this province that has it... " Good bye doctor. I found another doctor who got out the books and read about it. Good luck.
Guest guest
Peggy... Who were you talking to in the hospital? It seems unlikely to me that some administrative person in the orthopaedic department would know much about the specific types of problems that are being treated. The one thing I think it's important for you to find out, is how many scoliosis revision surgeries your surgeon does/has done. Get the names and phone numbers of as many as you can, and call those people to discuss their experiences. Good luck. Regards,

Peggy, But is he a SCOLIOSIS spinal surgeon? From what you stated in your post, it sounds a bit fishy to me. Refer to the Scoliosis Research Society's web site at WWW.SRS.ORG, and go to the subheading " Doctors Listing " . See if this surgeon is listed. SRS members are spinal orthopedic surgeons who sub-specialize in the treatment of scoliosis. S.
Guest guest
The doctor I am seeing is not strictly a scoliosis doctor. But I am only seeing him to determine if I have flatback and to see how the Harrington rod implant is after 25 years. He does have experience with these things. If I will need surgery for flatback or anything else, I will see one of six specialists listed on the flatback sites. Peggy Greene JPG Unlimited Antiques & Collectibles jpgreene@... Guest guest
Hi Bee and everyone, I have a doctor appt next week for my yearly pap smear but I'm a little nervous being I haven't had my period in over 10 months now. Obviously they're going to ask when my last period was. Should I lie or tell them it was 10 months ago? Just not sure how they may react to that. Thanks for any advice! I haven't had a pap smear in 15 years and I have never had a mammogram. I believe doctors promote such tests, as well as annual physical exams, in order to make more money. The " scare tactic " they use is: " Something may be killing you but you won't know about it until it is too late! " I think I'd know if something is out of whack with my body. If you go ahead with the test, I suggest you lie, or you may get adverse reactions from your doctor. My diet isn't the only one that causes women to stop menstruating; even the GAPS diet (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) causes it too, as well as many others. I've been reading about experiments done on animals, and the same thing happens to them - it's in the book Good Calories, Bad Calories, p. 436. All the best, Bee
