Guest guest
Hi Sophie, Thank you for the gracious complement. It is my pleasure to be of some help to wonderful parents like you who are taking a moment out of your all too busy caring responsibilities to thank me for doing what I can to help spread the simple idea that a more natural development of our god given capacities to its maximum potential is more rewarding than reliance on expert medical interventions that often come up short of the promises they have usually sold you prior to their procedures. a's first complication appears to have arisen from the deprivation of oxygen after her traumatic birth and first long hospital stay. Many of these cases have been reversed and ameliorated with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. I know people who have gone to Canada for Hyperbaric Oxygen treatments, you do have it. Below is an article I sent last year. Last month I reported on Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) for Multiple Sclerosis. This month Dr. Rowen,MD in his newsletter Second Opinion, June 2003 writes about some of the other uses of this underused therapy. HBO has been used successfully to reverse damage from strokes for years. It is best to get to a hospital with a hyperbaric chamber as soon as possible, but improvements have been reported as late as 5 years after the stroke. It is still worth a try. A number of professional sports teams and horse trainers use hyperbaric oxygen chambers for wound healing and injuries, they have to get athlete's back in the lineup or the team and owners lose big money. The FDA has given limited approval for HBO decompression sickness (the bends),osteomyelits (bone disease), poorly healing wounds and carbon monoxide poisoning. Within these limits the medical community usually does not take advantage of the allowed or indicated treatments, the provision for wound healing is a huge opening that is just not used enough. HBO does not have the high profit incentive of drug companies to push the information to busy physicians. If used after surgery healing would be much better and faster. The FDA has approved a low pressure " mild " HBO fabric chamber for use in high altitude sickness. The latest research shows the lower pressure achieved in these HBO fabric chambers is sufficient. A recent study found it helpful with cerebral palsy, patients confined to a wheelchair for 15 years were able to walk after a series of HBO treatments.SPECT scans of special brain metabolism have shown improvement in cellular function with mild pressure alone. Dr.Ricard Neubauer has used low pressure HBO at 1.4 ATA(atmospheres) where sea level is 1.0 ATA for Multiple Sclerosis. Portable chambers now make it much easier and hopefully cheaper to get HBO.FDA approved it for in home use and the patient can have the chamber. The chamber comes with an oxygen concentrator. Combined with mild pressure elevation of 1.3-1.4 ATA, tissue concentration makes the level needed for optimal healing. Scuba divers can rig up a mld HBO chamber by diving down 10 feet in a pool and breathing from a tank of 100% oxygen for an hour session. This is about 1.3 ATA. This may explain the miraculous healing at the Dead Sea. At 1,340 feet below sea level, additional air pressure 24 hours a day might provide enough extra compressed oxygen gas to cause significant revitalization. In order to purchase a mild HBO chamber you will need a doctor's prescription. Information on mild HBO chambers can be obtained from Oxy Health Corporation website: http://www.hyperoxy.com/ their toll free number 800-635-4334. For a physician familiar with HBO check these sources of doctors who are likely to be familiar with and use HBO. Facilities hat use HBO http://www.hbomedtoday.com/ American College for Advancement in Medicine http://www.acam.org/ International College of Integrative Medicine http://www.icimed.com/ Foundation for Advancement of Innovative Medicine http://www.faim.org/ American Academy of Environmental Medicine http://www.aaem.com/ From your description I know a remains somewhat shy of going out and getting some fresh air and exercise, and as winter approaches this becomes more difficult. She also probably feels very embarassed and inhibitrd by her limitations. Life can be hard for these kids-but they are kids and gowing ones at that. I think her self image and capacities should be developed and explored. I am somewhat familiar with the support and encouragement given to ALL participants by the Achilles Track Club. It is a club consisting of various handicapped runners. Some much greater than others. but all given encouragement and acceptance. We have just seen the latest NYC Marathon, for many years Zoey Koplowitz who had Multiple Sclerosis was always the last finisher. She walked on crutches and fell down repeatedly, but always picked herself up with the assistance of another volunteer who helped her all along the course as thousands cheered. She usually took 24 hours to finish but they kept the finish line open and she was an isp[irational story on the TV and the newspapers. She was always cheered and encouraged to complete this difficult task. When I enter races in New York I see many Achilles runners who are severely disabled and some cannot control more than their toes to push off on their wheelchair. They still get encouragement and a measure of satisfaction and exercise of the available organs to avoid further atrophy of bodily function-which is a danger. She may need physical therapy first, but lets aim for something like that. But a has to want it, perhaps she can see others doing it. arnold
