Guest guest
Quick question. Do you do the actual schooling or have you compelled the local school to provide the service? I had a situation where the school withheld " Home/Hospital Instruction " from me. Not a bad idea to have both modalities complement each other. My situation was not specific to seizures/epilepsy, but the same laws would apply. I'm a battle scarred mother; been there, done that. Take care, Annie
Guest guest
Since IDEA and Section 504 are federal policies, I wouldn't expect your requirements to be different from in my state California. Though I don't know. BTW, my battle-scarred Mom experience stems from my child having Lyme. Has your child ruled out Lyme Disease? Lyme causes seizures, plus many other musical symptoms. Take care, Annie.
Guest guest
Lorne would have qualified for the Home/Medical exemption that our school district offers, but he would also have had to " perform " to the testing schedules and met the criteira for the state TEKS testing. Honestly, the pressure from the teachers alone to " perform " during TEKS check weeks and practice tests sets the entire school on edge. If the kids don't perform well the teachers look bad. IMO, holding the teachers responsible for my son's academic performance is like holding the dentist responsible for how many cavities he gets! Having to be under the extreme amount of pressure with middle school, puberty, and the TEKS is what IMO contributed to the increase in his seizures. Like I was telling Barb, the more I read about homeschooling, the more impressed I am. I used to be the B---- that snubbed her nose at people who homeschooled (in defense, I've been around some who really were doing it for the wrong reasons and their kids were just wierd!), now I'm eating a little crow. LOL I hear your " battle scarred mother " call. I empathize! I still have 3 sons in public school. This will be a learning experience for all of us. As they say, the journey of a 1000 steps begins with a BIG GULP and Snickers bar! > Quick question. Do you do the actual schooling or have you compelled the > local school to provide the service? Guest guest
Never really looked into Lyme Disease. We're in Texas so it wouldn't be at the top of the list of possibilities. We've been unsuccessful in determining a cause for his epilepsy. My older brother had it, and all my kids had fibriles (sp) when they were infants, so. . .you know. . .it's just one of those things. He had a real problem (we thought) bedwetting when he was in 1st-3rd grades, and half way though 3rd grade he started having tonic/clonics at school. We realized then, that he was having seizures at night which was causing the betwetting. Once we got him on ACDs the betwetting stopped. For the longest time I stayed mad at the doctor because Lorne's whole personality changed too. I was convinced that the drugs had changed him. It wasn't until I figured out that he was having other types of seizures and those seizures were causing him to look like " zombie boy " that I gained respect for his DR. I took him off his meds in 4th grade, but by the end of summer he was having seizures again. We've been through depakote, zonegran, depakene, depakote & zonegran together, lamictal, and now lamictal and zarontin together. After blood test results are in from his stick yesterday, we'll decide if he needs to change meds AGAIN! The DR. seems to think he will outgrow the seizures after puberty (I HOPE!!!!!!!) but also said that it would be harder to expect that outcome the more drugs he has to take aka: cocktails. THe stress level has been so bad since school started, that he's reverted back to seizure behavior we haven't seen since 4th grade. He also is displaying a form of dyskinesia when he's fatigued (especially after P.E.) I did look into the home/medical and the school was more than willing to offer, but I just don't want him subject to the performance levels the state is requiring for the kids. I don't like the TEKS for my " normal " kids either, but they are in High School, and I really don't want to homeschool them--they all play football, and I can't afford to feed them at home LOL! I'm grateful everyday they eat AWAY from home! LOL I will look into the Lyme thing and see if there's anything up with that. Thanks for the info Annie.
