When we first heard of the study I contacted Dr. LaJoie and at first she was

very willing to stay in contact with me so I started my son on the Melatonin

and as she had me increase it his seizures became worse. She said that was fine

while his body adjusted to the dosage but then and even to date I sent her an

email and after waiting numerous weeks and not hearing back from her I took

my son off the melatonin. All it did was help him go to sleep fast which is nor

wasn't his problem.

I thought I read somewhere that Melatonin can trigger seizures. Do you know

anything about that? Beverly

Hi .

I met Dr.Josie LaJoie at the NYU Medical Center Conferences on Alternative

Treatments for Epilepsy. She lectured on the use of melatonin in epilepsy

treatment. She seemed very receptive to exploring the possibilities of

something

other than the standard AED's. I haven't known any patients of hers. She is

based

at NYU medical center. I don't have her direct dial phone number, but The

sponsors of the conference NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center is

can give you a further connection.

Melatonin effect on seizures in children with severe neurologic deficit

disorders.

Peled N, Shorer Z, Peled E, Pillar G.

Sleep Laboratory, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel.

peledbn@...

PURPOSE: Recently, melatonin has been associated with antiepileptic activity,

most probably because of its antioxidant activity as a free radical scavenger.

This study aimed to expand the clinical experience with melatonin as an

antiepileptic drug (AED) in humans. METHODS: Six children (aged 2-15 years),

with severe intractable seizures, were treated with 3 mg of oral melatonin 30

min before bedtime, in addition to their previous AED treatment for 3 months. A

diary of clinical seizure activity (time of day, duration, and type) was kept by

parents for a month before and during treatment. Five patients underwent a

baseline polysomnography, and three also were monitored during melatonin

treatment. RESULTS: With the exception of the parents of one child, all reported

a significant clinical improvement in seizure activity during treatment,

particularly during the night. Sleep studies showed a decrease in epileptic

activity in two of the three patients who were monitored during treatment, and a

change of sleep efficiency from 84.2% to 89.7% (NS). Improvement in daytime

behavior and in communication abilities was reported by parents, although it was

not objectively measured. CONCLUSIONS: This clinical observation adds to the

growing data showing the antiepileptic effect of melatonin. However, owing to

the paucity of well-controlled studies, using melatonin as an AED should be

limited to this specific group of patients with intractable seizures.

It seems info runs in both directions regarding melatonin and seizures. I have

not seen a seizure increase in my son though we have kept his doseage low: 1 mg.

30 min before bedtime as needed.

Melatonin May Cause Increased Seizures In Children With Multiple Neurological

Problems

LONDON, ENGLAND -- April 24, 1998 -- Melatonin, which is increasingly available

over the counter in some countries, is used for sleep disturbances including

those that occur with jet lag.

Children with multiple neurological problems often have sleeping problems, which

led Dr Sheldon, of the Sleep Medicine Center, division of pulmonary and

critical care medicine at the Children't Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL., to

try melatonin in six patients.

Although some of the children's sleep disorders were improved, four of the six

had increased numbers of seizures while on melatonin, reports Sheldon in this

week's issue of The Lancet. The frequency of the seizures returned to their

baseline rates after melatonin was discontinued.

Sheldon writes that this possible pro-convulsant potential warrants further

investigation, particularly in view of the ready availability of melatonin.

Beverly,

Actually, I heard the opposite. I heard that it helps children who get

seizures because they are sleep deprived, it helps them get a good

night's sleep and it does work, but unfortunately, after giving it to my

daughter for two days in a row, on the third day, she had a very hard

time falling asleep on her own. She rarely has a hard time falling

asleep, her problem is snoring and restless sleep, so that bothered me a

little bit. If I feel I need to give it to her again, I will but not two

days in a row or maybe I just need to give her a lower dose since I gave

her 3mg. They also sell 1mg.

Do you give it to your son every day?? I gave my daughter 3mg for just

two nights and on the third night, she had a hard time going to sleep on

her own which rarely happens. It did help her sleep good and I did not

see an increase in her seizures. Maybe one day I'll try the 1mg.

Grace,

From the reading I have done on melatonin it seems that 1 mg is as effective as

3 mg dose. 1 mg. is definately enough for kids, the 3 mg. dose is more for older

adults that have trouble staying asleep the entire night.

Mike, thanks,

Our son just saw a sleep neurologist, and I asked about Melatonin, and

he immediately said 3 mg. Having read your info, if we try it, we will

try 1 mg. to start.

Thanks again,

Chris

Mark,

The melatonin definitely helped her sleep, it's when I stopped giving it

to her that she couldn't fall asleep on her own, but last night she slept

much better without the melatonin. I'm going to look for the valerian.

I heard that they come in drops that you just put on her nightgown or

pillow, right? God Bless You Mark!

In the article that was posted about Melatonin for Kids, the

research part on ADULTS indicated seizures as a possible side effect.

I am an adult and find that I cannot take Melatonin (less than 1

mg.) more than two days in a row. That is because of it's balance

with serotonin.

To help your kid sleep deeply, in addition to the things I posted

a couple of days ago, chamomile tea at bedtime, sufficient Magnesium

in the diet, the amino acids 5-htp and/or SAM-e (taken early in the

day) may be helpful.

Hope this helps

5 HTP is a precursor to seratonin. My son experienced nightmares and an

annoying kind of lucid dreaming when taking this as have a few others I have

talked with, though I know of other people that find it very helpful. I have

heard it's better absorbed by the body when B6 is taken with it.

MJH,

Last night she seemed to sleep better. Her neuro told me to give her two

cookies and a glass of warm milk before she went to bed, so I did and it

seemed to work, but if I ever feel I need to give her something, I will

try some of the items you posted. Thanks alot!

Mark,

No, I've never been to Texas but I've heard alot about it. When my

husband was younger, he hitchicked all the way there from Florida because

he wanted to see what it was like there. He said that he liked it.

Mark, thanks for the prayers and I'll have to try the Lavender. What

kind of dog is Sparky? God Bless!

No, I've never been to Texas but I've heard alot about it. When my

husband was younger, he hitchicked all the way there from Florida because

he wanted to see what it was like there. He said that he liked it.
