4:52pm 06/01/01 Abbott defends thyroid drug (ABT) By Ted Griffith Abbott Laboratories late Friday issued a statement defending its popular thyroid drug, Synthroid. Abbott said the drug is "safe and effective" and will file an application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to ensure that Synthroid remains on the market. Abbott's comments follow a report in the Wall Street Journal that said the FDA has raised questions about the thyroid drug. Abbott said that Synthroid, like some other drugs that were marketed before 1962, did not receive formal approval from FDA. But Abbott said it's now working with the federal agency on submission of a new drug application. Shares of Abbott (ABT) slipped 36 cents to $51.62.
