Guest guest Posted June 14, 2001 Report Share Posted June 14, 2001 It is our strong desire to treat our son's seizures through nutrition, and have already started toward that goal. Our dilemma is, how do you graciously turn down the drs. recommendations without being considered irresponsible parents? We understand the side effects of the drugs, and we explained our concern to the drs. But their thoughts were the danger of the seizures outweigh the side effects of the drugs. So, we thought we could have him on a low dosage of the medicine, while at the same time build him up nutritionally hoping not to have him on the drugs long. Has anyone rejected drug treatment and took a chance with your child nutritionally? How did you handle the seizures? What were your paths? Where do you go for a hair analysis? I live in St. Louis. Thank you, Bianca Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest guest Posted June 14, 2001 Report Share Posted June 14, 2001 Bianca, We had our then 3 1/2 year old daughter Tasya on Depakote for 1 1/2 years using nutritional means to build her up concurrently. The neuro's are right that the seizures are dangerous, even life threatening, but they are sadly wrong if they don't mandate nutritional intervention as a co-factor in overall treatment of the disorder. Our neuro said that nutrition is okay to play with but drugs are the only " proven " method of controlling seizure activity. Of course, the neurologist won't talk to me anymore as Tasya is off meds (since November 2000), and has only had two waking petite mal's since and a few small bursts while asleep on occasion, but very mild ones. I am one of the lucky ones as I run a company that has 12 medical advisors and resources to do more research than the average person could hope to do. You can read about my daughters on going saga at my website http://www.carbonbased.com/EpilepsyJourney.htm . Hopefully this helps. Guest guest Posted June 14, 2001 Report Share Posted June 14, 2001 Look up www.doctorsdata.com and your doctor should be able to send it to them. If not them Great Smokies Lab or Great Plains Lab. Also check amino acids, Mark on the list should tell you more about that with cellmates. For me, since my child is autistic, the first thing was to get all wheat and milk products off. This improved seizures by at least 50%. Then looking at phenolic foods because he has PST deficiency (not enough sulphar, which detoxes the body) and even diets such as FEINGOLD www.feingold.org . Then doing semi to full paleo diet (www.paleo.org ). Then adding nutrition with healing the gut (which is the first thing to be addressed in epilepsy imho), things like L-Glutamine, Aloe Vera (mannatech or other aloe products), Microhydin (alkalaizes the body), Mitochondrial Cocktails (Vit A, E, K, C and Nicatinamide), for me also addressing a carnatine deficiency, Fatty acids such as Lauric Acids, OMEGA 369 balance, No transfats (no Mceedees), Homeopathic Mecurials (to remove mercury since most if not all autistic children are mercury poisined from vaccinations or environment), Homeopathic FGF (www.biomedd.com ), and now looking into chelation We are also on the stealth protocol involving anti virals (www.ccid.org ), and I am looking into RIFE treatments to zap buggers and viruses. Guest guest Posted June 14, 2001 Report Share Posted June 14, 2001
My doctor told me all " alternative " options were " bull-shit. " & nbsp; After being on Dilantin for 10 years, I tried a few other seizure meds that made me ill, When those meds did not work my doctor said that I should just stick with the Dilantin because that is what works for me. & nbsp; I was not happy with that answer, because the & nbsp;potential for side effects, one being " coarsening of the facial features " was not something I wanted to take a chance with. & nbsp; & nbsp;Also, I read & nbsp;elsewhere that Dilantin can cause sexual disfunction in women.--not my idea of fun. & nbsp; So I went against my doctor's recommendations and slowly took myself off my Dilantin. & nbsp; I take B-Complex, Taurine, Tyrosine, and Calcium/Magnesium. & nbsp; I went through brief stages of very minimal seizure activity (just a hint of electrical " mis-activity " ) and now I am totally off the Dilantin and I have not had any seizures. & nbsp; It has not been long, but I am feeling quite fortunate with my progess, and very disconcerted with my Doctor's statements. & nbsp; Please keep in mind that I had simple partial seizures and the risk I have taken may not be as great as the risk of not taking meds if a person has grand mal.
Angie
& nbsp; rushdelivery1@... wrote:
It is our strong desire to treat our son's seizures through nutrition,
and have already started toward that goal. & nbsp; Our dilemma is, how do you
graciously turn down the drs. recommendations without being considered
irresponsible parents? & nbsp; We understand the side effects of the drugs, and
we explained our concern to the drs. & nbsp; But their thoughts were the danger
of the seizures outweigh the side effects of the drugs. & nbsp; So, we thought
we could have him on a low dosage of the medicine, while at the same time
build him up nutritionally hoping not to have him on the drugs long. & nbsp; Has
anyone rejected drug treatment and took a chance with your child
nutritionally? & nbsp; How did you handle the seizures? & nbsp; What were your paths?

Where do you go for a hair analysis? & nbsp; I live in St. Louis.

Thank you,
Bianca

& nbsp;

Groups Sponsor

<FORM action=http://rd./M=201903.1442210.3019427.1372631/D=egroupmail/S=17000\ 61677:N/A=663526/R=0/*http://store./cgi-bin/clinkform/ydomains+merchant\ -ad:dmad/M=201903.1442210.3019427.1372631/D=egroupmail/S=1700061677:N/A=663526/R\ =1/992526054+http://whois.domains./domains_wresults.html method=get>

<IMG alt= " ! Guest guest Posted June 15, 2001 Report Share Posted June 15, 2001 I am now three years seizure free without drugs--drugs never fully controlled my seizures. The benefits do not outweigh the risks for everyone. I have some information about taurine with links on my web page: http://www.indiana.edu/~pietsch/zoe-taurine.html Other information here: http://www.indiana.edu/~pietsch/seizurethreshold.html You may find this book very helpful as well: Epilepsy - a Behavior Medicine Approach to Assessment and Treatment in Children; Joanne Dahl;Paperback(May 1993); Hogrefe & Huber Pub; ISBN:0889371067 If you are going to decline or muinimize the use of drugs there are many things you may do to seizure-proof home as well. This next link will connect you to the Charlie Foundation. Jim Abraham's young son owes his life to the ketogenic diet. Lot's of info and links there. http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Hills/2844/mso_charlie.html Zoe Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Guest guest Posted June 16, 2001 Report Share Posted June 16, 2001 Hi Aja! Great news to hear from you! All seizures are preceded by changes in blood flow in the areas of the brain where they start. That's why tests like the SPECT are useful, they track cerebral blood flow and help in finding where the seizures start. Are you doing any slow deep breathing routines? Do you want some to try? Conscious control of your breathing helps regulate the heart and blood flow to the brain. Be patient, lady, you're doing great! Zoe Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
