Hi Listmates,

IMPORTANT NOTICE PLEASE READ

I have just discovered that both L-Arginine and L-Ortnithine (amino acids) are Not To Be Given To Children.

From Earl Mindell's Vitamin Bible:

All About Arginine

CAUTIONS: DO NOT GIVE TO GROWING CHILDREN [could cause Giantism] or persons with Schizophrenic Conditions. Arginine Supplements --- and Arginine-Rich Foods --- are contraindicated for anyone who has Herpes. Dosages exceeding 20 - 30 Grams daily are not recommended. [Could cause Enlarged Joints and deformities of Bones.]

This amino acid is necessary for the normal function of the Pituitary Gland. Along with Ornithine, Phenylalanine, and other Neuro Chemicals, Arginine is required for the synthesis and release of the Pituitary Gland's growth hormone. The need for Arginine is especially great in males, since seminal fluids contain as much as 80% of this Protein Building-Block, and a deficiency could lead to infertility.

What It Can Do For You:

....Increase sperm count in male.

....Aid in Immune Response and healing of wounds.

....Help Metabolize stored body fat and tone up muscle tissue

....Promote Physical and Mental alertness

Best Natural Sources:

Nuts, Popcorn, Carob, Gelatin Desserts, Chocolate, Brown Rice, Oatmeal, Raisins, Sunflower and Sesame Seeds, Whole Wheat Bread, and All Protein-Rich Foods.

Supplement Guide:

L-Arginine is available in tablets or powder. It's best taken on an empty stomach [with juice or water] in a 2-Gram [2,000mg.] dose immediately before retiring. Additional benefits - particularly those for muscle-toning --- can be gained by taking 2-Grams [2,000mg.] on an empty stomach [with juice or water] one hour prior to engaging in vigorous physical exercise.

Personal Advice And Comments:

Arginine is necessary for adults because after the age of 30 there is almost a complete cessation of its secretion from the Pituitary Gland.

If you notice a thickening or coarsening of your skin, your're taking too much Arginine. Several weeks of extremely high doses can cause this side effect, but it is reversible. Just cut back on your intake.

Any physical trauma increases your need for dietary Arginine.

L-Arginine taken in conjunction with L-Ornithine can help stimulate weight loss.

Hi DeEtte,

I forgot to address the Sleeping Issue.

I personally take a couple of L-Ornithine (500mg) at bedtime and they do the trick. Better than any sleeping pill and they are all natural.

Hope this helps.
