Guest guest
Aja, our son was part of the keppra study over ayear ago and the empotional side effect were more than we could handle . it helped with clustering but thats it. some do well and others not. it really is a personal choice and if you had emotional side effects before you chances are great. Guest guest
My daughter is on 500 mg depakote in AM and again in PM. And is taking 250 mg of Keppra in divided dose. Plus on the keto diet. She is doing very well.
Guest guest
Hi Aja My sis in law was put on Keppra and it was a disaster for her from an emtional side effect point of view, but it did help marginally with the seizures. Having said that tho' she has had terrible emotional side effects from Topamax, Sabril (Vigabatrin) and Keppra, and is still on Tegretol and Valproic Acid at the same time. Right now I *think* she is on Sabril, Keppra, Tegretol and Valproic acid as a cocktail, but only on half the dosage of Sabril and Keppra that she was. Topamax was by far the worst (suicidal and manic episodes), Sabril and Keppra caused severe depression (but not mania) and truly scary mood swings, along with *everyone is trying to kill me* episodes. The worst side effects were when she was maxed out on the dosages. Having said that, I know people who have achieved amazing seizure control with no emotional side effects on all of these drugs. I think it's just a matter of if at first you don't succeed ...... HTH and sorry I couldn't be any more positive Kat | Hey everyone, | | My Dr. wants to put me on Keppra... Guest guest
When we tell of our experiences with medications we need to look at one ocmmon thing that i have seen. that keppra does pose problems with emotional liability. Think is this drug goingto be used as an add on (polytherepy) secondly have you had adverse reactions to other drugs. don't get me worng keppra did help with the clustering but it was not worth it overall for the emotional side effects. Guest guest
My daughter is on 500 mg per day of Keppra (250 mg BID) and is seizure free so far and no problems. She has been on it 2-3 months. Sue
Guest guest
Dr. s, I would love some more advice on Keppra -- I'm been on just about all the new drugs on the market today (Felbatol, Neurontin, Lamictal, Topamax) without much luck. Maybe because I'm looking for a solution that doesn't space me out & make my aphasia & paralysis worse than it already is (I had a left-hemisphere stroke with all the trimmings 15 years ago). I loved Lamictal because I had more mental function than I ever had since my stroke (I spoke & thought much more clearly), but the side-effects were too scary: one breakthrough blackout seizure & I started having arrhythmias while on it -- of course, I came back to Tegretol (my trusted poison) & I kept having these arrhythmias, which leads me to wonder whether it was coincidence or the medication harmed me permanently. So my doctor is urging me to try Keppra... But I have strong reservations because of the emotional side-effects that are associated with it. I heard that it's very common to get suicidal, psychotic, & /or start having hallucinations. I'm a single mom & can't afford to have my 4 year old child go through MY emotional fits & starts if it's as common as people say. Suggestions? It would be wonderful to have my cognition back, but not at the expense of my peace of mind (which is shaky to begin with) or my daughter's. I've done a great deal alternatively, with my diet, meditation, even sniffing Jasmine (which smells wonderful but doesn't do anything mentally for me), & I'm trying to coordinate a week to spend with you all, but, right now, I'm faced with this dilemma... Help? ~Aja >From: donna j <djandrews@...> >Reply- > >Subject: Re: [ ] keppra >Date: Wed, 22 Aug 2001 07:55:23 -0700 > >Dear Aja: > I am studying the effects of this drug on my patients and have been >for the >last 18 mos. WILL HAS BEEN ON THE LAMICTAL SINCE LAST MAY AND WE REALLY DON'T HAVE GREAT SEIZURE CONTROL. WE HAVE PRETTY GOOD CONTROL BUT NOT THE BEST. THE FLIP SIDE IS THAT THE LAMICTAL HAS BEEN GREAT FOR HIM BECAUSE WE WENT FROM THAT AWFUL DEPAKOTE WHICH HE LOST ALL HIS SKILLS WITH AND WITH THE LAMICTAL HE IS NOT ONLY GAINING BACK HIS SKILLS BUT LEARNING ALOT MORE NOW AND HE HAS HIS FEELING BACK AND HE IS LEARNING HOW TO SPEAK AGAIN AND SIT AGAIN. THANKS FOR THE HELP TAKE CARE LORI
Guest guest
lori, how old is your son is the first question and what type of sezures does he have. My sonw as on keppra for the drug study before it was officially used in children. our osn was 10 at the time and could not handle large doses of it. it made him depressed and agitated.it helped with clustering of his seizures. i th ink everyone is different so talk to others i have heard great stories for adults but do read the literature about the psychological affects. as far as learning it did not impact him in that way at all. julie
Guest guest
JULIE WILL IS 4 YRS OLD. Guest guest
Lori: Hi! I have been on Keppra for 7 yrs now and have found it to give great control. I had tried all other medications on the market before Keppra. It has very little side effects for me, such as dry mouth, my hands go numb about 1 hour before my next dose, and I have the oppisite effect from it because it makes me hyper instead of the sadation normally felt by other anti-seizure meds. The lamactial gave me harsh damage. I was very allergic to it. I had taken the depakote for years but did not have any luck. I now take Keppra and Trileptal. julie
