Guest guest
So is RAI a test they do or is it a treatment, is it something to say " NO " to. Guest guest
RadioActive Iodine. Its the treatment where you swollow a drink or pill of radioactive iodine. The iodine, containing the radioactivity, is taken up by your thyroid. The radioactivity will eventually destroy thyroid tissue. This will make it where your thyroid cannot produce thyroid hormone as usual. The ideal dose would damage the thyroid only to the point to where it will not over produce hormone again. Too much will render you hypOthyroid. Either result is for life since the radioactive causes permenant damage. At least, that's my understanding. (Please correct me someone if I'm wrong. Thanks) Re: Very informative group with real peoples stories and al... Can you please tell me what RAI means? Guest guest
RAI is Radioactive Iodine. Your thyroid attracts iodine (as in table salt) and when you take the radioactive iodine it goes to your thyroid - or that's what we're all told... Guest guest
Good description. The only thing I might add is that the endos nowadays generally try to destroy your thyroid. They don't want any 'mutated' cells left. So the dosage is calculated to 'ablate' your thyroid. K Re: Very informative group with real peoples stories and al... Can you please tell me what RAI means? Guest guest
It's a treatment for symptoms but not a cure. It's a choice to say yes or no. Personally, being hyper all the time was killing me, so I chose RAI. It's up to the person what they want to do. The important thing is whatever you decide, keep checking your TSH, T4 and T3's. If they are still not right, chose another treatment. It is very dangerous to be hyperthyroid too long. Guest guest
Kate, I agree with your statement regarding endos. When I met mine in August, after he said " Hi " , he told me that he likes to treat Graves/hyperthyroidism by RAI and then use safe and easy meds indefinately. I took this to mean: " I want to destroy your thyroid forever and make you dependent on medications you can buy from pharmacuetical firms for the rest of your life. Guest guest
Yes, as it will most likely render you hypO. So if you are already hypo it wouldn't be needed. RAI is also used in aggressive treatment of thyroid cancer. Usually surgery to remove the entire thyroid, then RAI to kill off any thyroid tissue left behind. Guest guest
When you have graves, it's almost like being diagnosed diabetic 1. It doesn't just " go away " and like many illnesses, it has to be treated. I would rather take synthroid than an anti-thyroid medication. Many people have to take medicine daily, I don't know why some people take thyroid problems so lightly and try to cure themselves. Being hyperthyroid is a very serious condition that can destroy your body if not treated. Bruce Rubin <barubin_medical@...> wrote: Kate, I agree with your statement regarding endos. Guest guest
Aimee, I'm not happy about the 30 mg of methimazole and 50 mg of atenolol I have to take each day. So far, I haven't seen any side effects though my endo for the 1st time has added a liver test to the blood chemistry he's checking and I always have to remind my primary care to add white blood cell count to the 3 hormones she's been checking. My point was the endo didn't go thru the options and when he came to RAI, he could have mentioned that is his preferred form of treatment, which is irreversible. Instead, it was the 2nd thing after he introduced himself and I had to ask about other options. --Bruce Aimee Cakes <AIMEECAKES@...> wrote: When you have graves, it's almost like being diagnosed diabetic 1.
