Guest guest
Dear Dawn Rose, Sorry to hear about all your trials and tribulations! It sounds like you got somewhat hyper from stopping the herbs, so after you've been on them a while again, especially with the small dose of ATDs, you should feel fine. Maybe the next time you need antibiotics you can ask someone about the interaction with your herbs--it might be totally safe, and you can save yourself another bout of this. Hope you're feeling great soon! Best, AntJoan
Guest guest
Oh, Dawn Rose - I'm so sorry to hear of this hassle you're having. The only way I can say anything is to say something from my own experience. This April I went away for a week. Before I went I was on an even keel - I was living well ie no sugar, no gluten, no caffeine, taking all the vits, herbs etc and consciously trying to be stress free. While I was away I ate sugar, gluten, drank caffeine, etc and was in a stressful situation - however, I was still taking the vits and stuff. But by the time I got home I was hyper again. It does seem to be the case - with me - that if I " live well " I'm okay on 1.25mg carbimazole twice a day, if I live " badly " I'm not. I wish I could be more helpful. Guest guest
Dawn, does your Shiatsu yoga lady have a website? I'd love to find out more about what she does and why. I, too, thought you might have digestive tract problems, so I'm interested in what she does for you. Guest guest
Hang in there, Dawn! You've been such an inspiration to me, as you have exhibited such a positive attitude about your illness. Having a thyroid imbalance is a life change, meaning we'll have our ups and downs. It soudns like you've a good plan and I really really hope that the upswing starts soon!! Guest guest
Hi Dawn Rose, Sorry to hear you've been having such a hard time. Reading through your email reminded me of a couple of things said about magnesium in iThyroid- go to ithyroid.com/magnesium.htm A couple of things he said: " The principal function of magnesium that is critical in thyroid disease is that it enables muscles to relax. With inadequate magnesium, the muscles cramp. When this happens to the heart muscles the heart does not go through a complete relaxation phase, and the next calcium-driven contraction begins before the relaxation is complete. This results in rapid heart beat and irregular heart rate known as arrhythmia. " " Symptoms of deficiency may include gastro disorders, irregular heart rhythm, muscle twitch, tremors, weakness, apprehensiveness, personality changes, disorientation, confusion, depression, and irritability. ... " ... craving for chocolate could be caused by need for magnesium ... According to my book on minerals, which I can't tell you the name of because I don't know where it is! - " The greatest concentration of magnesium is found in nuts, especially almonds, cashews, peanuts, dried beans, lentils, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, wholegrains (esp. rye, millet, barley), canned seafood. " My experience is that if I get a bit slack with my diet - usually by eating foods with sugar in them and drinking wine - then my heart rate goes up, I start feeling hyper again, and wake up in the morning with a really depressing feeling of apprehension. And I almost feel overwhelmed with apprehension if I have to do anything out of my normal routine. This is not my normal personality at all!! Anyway, a little extra magnesium seems to help. Hope this helps you, Dawn Rose. >From: " dawn rose " <getdawnrose@...> >Reply-hyperthyroidism >hyperthyroidism , graves_support >Subject: Dawn - relapse? >Date: Thu, 04 Jul 2002 01:01:19 +0000 > > >hmmmm ... it's complicated! > >About six weeks ago, having been euthyroid for about 5 months with no >antibodies for about 2 months, I got adult whooping cough and had a course >of antibiotics. Guest guest
Hi Dawn Rose Sorrry to hear you are having some 'hyper' stuff happening. How I envy you that in a way. I opted for RAI and no longer have any real control over my metabolism. Lots of the hyper stuff I don't miss but some of it wasn't so bad. I was at least in control at that point. Go back on your meds and remember that it will help. It just takes time - seems like forevever some days. :-) I have been taking every med and vitamin and dietary supplement recommended and reached a point where I sort of 'gave up' the idea of feeling better. I quit taking all the extra stuff, and exercising as well. Besides here it is really hot! Somehow, even though I have no thyroid left, I still am very sensitive to heat! For a while I cruised along just fine but then I began to feel much worse again. So for me it is a case of eat right, take supplements, vitamins, exercise, take meds and continue on. It is hard to come to terms with this disease being a lifelong thing. I know I'm still struggling with it. dawn rose wrote: hmmmm ... it's complicated! About six weeks ago, having been euthyroid for about 5 months with no antibodies for about 2 months, I got adult whooping cough and had a course of antibiotics. AT this point, I stopped taking any (bugleweed, motherwort, yarrow and nettle) herbs as I didn't know how they would interact if at all with the antibiotics. The whooping cough went and I felt good and decided to see how I would do if I continued - no pills, no herbs, no diet, and no exercise - well, not as much. Living a normal life (as much as the burping and the upper left abdo pain allows!). Well, it was great while it lasted, but I am beginning to feel really hyper again. Hyper in the way that I felt for the 18 months or so when I straggled around without a diagnosis, feeling awful, probably subclinically hyper. It waxes and wanes, my heart pounds when I lie down to go to sleep, my heart rate takes longer to come back to normal after exercise, I am REALLY ratty - people annoy me and I grit my teeth and just can't stand in a cue or wait for a bus... if the bus doesn't come in thirty seconds, I would rather walk the two miles. These symptoms are all much worse when I am pre-menstral, which seems really often as I am having periods every 23 days, though this month it's late rather than early; part of me thinks I should wait until I am not premenstral anymore before I write this, as I will probably see it all differently then! Sounds like I need to go back on some sort of meds?? My blood tests are still within the normal range, but the TSH is only just. Antibodies for TSI are all normal. I have drawn a graph of my blood tests and when I look back over my results since January I notice that my TSH has been going down all the time and is now 0.7 (0.35 being the normal range low), and my FT3 has been rising slightly, my FT4 staying fairly much in the middle. I am obsessing again about WHY my endocrine system is so confused! A fair enough obsession when it looks like it is going to go off again. So... I have my quaterly appointment with my endo week after next and he will probably say go back on the ATDs. In the meantime, I am taking herbs again, and have already reintroduced 2.5mg of carbimazole at night to try and stop my heart racing (it's not working and sometimes feels like the ATD is causing the heart racing to worsen). I want to get back to the gym but am tired, alot. I thought I might at least have lost a few lbs but when I stepped on the scales I realised I had gained yet another 4 kgs AHHHHG. I had been having cappucinos and milk in my tea and eating grazingly instead of three meals - so that's all got to stop. I am now 88 kgs...I'm only 5.5", I should be 60 (was 60 - I have gained fifty percent of my body weight since Christmas 2000, most of it in those first three or four months of being hypo.) I am planning to join an organisation called sure slim who work out a menu for you... I keep believing I can loose this weight myself, but now it is 18 months on and I am still looking in the mirror at this person who doesn't represent who I think I am!! I really don't want all the health problems that come with obesitiy - diabetes, heart problems, sleep apnea etc. SO... NOW I am going to go on another diet - I find that cutting out carbs seems to bring me more towards hypo and stop weight gain... though it doesn't always get me to loose weight. I am also, today, going to see a woman yoga teacher who has Graves' herself and is feeling good by all accounts. I have to remind myself that it is never going to be as bad as it once was because now we know what it is. Any other hints for avoiding a relapse before it happens fully, gratefully recieved. DAWN ROSE As a recap, I had severe thyrotoxicosis in June 2000, was on and off ATDs until November 2000 due to falling neutrophil count, finally went on ATDs in November 2000 and was considered euthyroid in about March 2000 in terms of my FT3 and FT4 but was kept hypo to try and get my TSH back. I gained an enormous amount of weight Jan - April 2001 and have never lost it. _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com
Guest guest
Hi Dawn, Sorry you're having a tough time at the moment. Can I ask what you take the Slippery Elm and Acidopholus for? Is it for digestive and/or Candida purposes? Thanks, and take good care. Love, Peta x

Guest guest
Hi Peta, Yeah it is for gut problems though I have never been diagnosed with leaky gut or candida... I don't discount them though. The slippery elm just does make it all fell better in there and the acidophilus too - and i take that because I had a stool test (sorry) once that told the whiz bang lab in America that I had no good flora in my gut anymore. So having an absence of the good stuff tells me that I probably have some bad stuff in there that they are not able to detect yet. So I have a flora building exercise all worked out with the doctor, but it is such an enormous amount of pills to take and I am scared about any one of them setting off my hyperthyroidism again so I have just skirted round the edges of it for the time being. I might give that idea some more thought again though, I've still got all the tablets and they are just about still in date!! You are doing an anti candida diet are you? Instead of the feeling that we're giving up stuff ie chocolate, caffeine etc <mmm, chocolaaaaaaaaate> - maybe we need to think in terms of glowing with virtue and health and chocolate and stuff is just a pollutant that we don't really want at all and just messes up the temples that are our bodies.
