Hi Lois,

Two weeks on copper isn't very long. It usually takes months to get the

copper up so hang in there. The magnesium is reponsible for the diarrhea--it

gradually gets better. Remember that the copper works better with B complex.

Extra biotin (600-1200 mcg) and extra PABA (200-500 mgs) are very important.

Also you are probably at the point where you'll need iron. Start slow,

like 18-25 mgs every other day. Also the itchy skin, hemorrhoids, and the

hypo feelings are probably from a zinc deficiency, so add a little zinc and

try to keep in about the same amount as iron (average about 10 mgs a day).

The three minerals, zinc, copper, and iron, need to be balanced and too much

of one or two of them upsets the balance. Remember if you go hypo, you may

need selenium.

Also the calcium/magnesium could be depleting your potassium, so look at

increasing potassium foods (see the potassium page at iThyroid.com). Other

minerals like sulfur (MSM), silica (from horsetail), and boron, also help.

If your heart rate is dropping, you're making progress. It should just

keep getting better.

magnesium, so I doubled it. I also read some information from

your website and have added 200-400mg magnesium a day

more. I am also taking 10 mg of Tapazole a day, trying to avoid

RAI, and still struggle with a rapid heartrate though not nearly as

high. I'm trying to stay off my heart meds because they make me

so sluggish. I was diagnosed with Grave's in Sept.

Since increasing the copper and magnesium, I have been

bothered by daily diarrhea and worsening hemorrhoids. It's

driving me nuts. Is this a side effect of these minerals?

Over the past month, I have had very dry itchy skin and also feel

very sluggish. I'm thinking I could be low thyroid, but my doctor

doesn't think so. I would appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks, Lois

Lois, I'm curious, you mentioned you're " trying to avoid RAI " . What does

this mean? Are the docs trying to pressure you into this treatment? I

can't help you with the vitamins/minerals but dry, itchy skin is very

common, I'm always slathering on lotions. I found Curel works for me. When

was your last blood test? Mona

I had dry and itchy skin over a week ago, after takin PTU for less than

3 weeks. I stopped PTU immediately and had my blood test done for sgpt

(liver enzyne). The result is an elevated sgpt--a side effect from

PTU. My skin is fine now. I wonder if your Tapazole is similar to my

PTU or not.

I started taking 6mg copper and 500-1000 Mg and Ca after learning that I

had hyperT in early Nov. I stopped all supplements when I had skin

itching. I am not taking anything other than some beta-blocker once a

while when I feel racing heart, although the pulse, at worst, is less

than 100/min. I don't know for sure if I have Grave or other, because I

skipped my thyroid scan. I hope to use diet and rest and relaxation to

heal my thyroid.

Dear Lois,

Magnesium definitely can cause diarrhea. I think spoke about this

once--how to start with less magnesium and build up, I think, but hopefully

he will address your questions. As for the beta blockers for the heartrate,

maybe you can start at a small dose as well? Just a little might calm your

heartrate and not make you sluggish--this is just a thought, as I'm not

really knowledgeable about drugs and dosages.

Good luck,

AntJoan

Liz,

How's your neck problem? Overall, how do you really feel aside from the

itchy skin?

' Hope it's an improvement from before... just be patient and keep on

smiling....
