Guest guest
Hi , Your lab results show that you're hyperthyroid, and most of the time the cause is Graves' disease, an autoimmune thyroid disorder. The least invasive conventional treatment is anti-thyroid drugs, but there are also many conventional treatment options that can help you and much that you can do yourself to help reduce symptoms (dietary changes, particularly correcting nutrient deficiencies and avoiding iodine, stress reduction techniques, herbal remedies, and homeopathy are all options). Whatever you do, don't rush into anything, especially anything aggressive. Read everything you can here, and at www.ithyroid.com and my site. Your doctor will probably order an RAI-uptake test to help diagnose Graves' disease, but you might want to read up on this too. There's a link on my web site. A blood test for certain thyroid antibodies is less invasive and more specific for Graves' disease. One of the most important things when you see an Endo Doctor is to make sure they spend the amount of time with you that you are comfortable with and answer all your questions. I am on my third Endo Doctor within the last 12 months. Even though they all had the same opinion I was not comfortable with the doctor. I finally found a doctor I am very comfortable with. My actual diagnosis is hashitoxicosis which is a very severe form of hyper with borderline Graves and Hashimoto. You may want to just go online and search under thyroid disease and print out the sympton list and mark the ones you are having. If you are irritable they can put you on an antidepressent. I've been on Zoloft for 8 years. As far as treatments, they have to do some test before they can decide the right kind of treatment. Good Luck!! Guest guest
, are you using preservative free eye drops? You need to do this to keep the eyes lubricated. REFRESH is a popular brand and is available as a nonpreservative drop that you can use as often as necessary!! Available at Wal-Marts, Targets, etcs. Take care, Mona P.S. Don't let the docs rush you into RAI or surgery. Try the antithyroid meds TAPAZOLE or PTU and give your body time to heal!! newly diagnosed hyper Hello. Last Thursday, Jan 4, my test results showed hyper: TSH <.03 and FreeT4 2.89. I have bulging, dry, light sensitive eyes, one fingernail that has pulled away from the nail bed and I am most irritable (ask my husband). I don't THINK I have other symptons. I meet with an endocronologist on Jan 18. What should I be asking? What do I want to know? What kind of treatments are least invasive? Any feedback is appreciated. Guest guest
Hey , I too was reported to have osteopenia. So I did some research and added vitamin K, manganese, boron and more calcium-magnesium tablets. And I started doing free weights. I used to have low back pain but I no longer do, and I'm sure when I get around to having another bone density test, it'll be improved. Guest guest
Mona, I use TheraTears which is a preservative free eye drop. I also just found a homeopathic one by Similasan.Don't know if it is preservative free though - I'll check. I've tried about 8 or so brands and these are the 2 with the most relief. I won't be rushing into anything! It took me 2 years to talk my gynecologist into a bone density test. When the results came back of COURSE my intuition was correct --- I have osteopenia. He wanted to immediately start me on medication writing a prescription without even looking up. I fired him right there and have not looked back. My new doctor who replaces who him and my family doc is internal medicine and I am quite satisfied with her approach. She waited a year a let me try extra exercise and soy products. Even though I eventually got a med, at least I have the natural way a chance. Are TAPAZOLE or PTU fairly non-invasive? What about diet? I have read to add more broccoli and cauliflower and turnip. Stay away from shellfish and chocolate --- 2 of my most favorites! Thanks again.
Guest guest
Hey Daisy. I have not the same thing. Actually I was already lifting weights when I was diagnosed with osteopenia. The Evista I am on has relieved my lower back pain immensely. My next bone density is tomorrow. I am SURE I have improved. I've been reading about Graves versus hyperthyroid and being able to have meds help reduce the bulging eyes. Does anyone have any information about this? Is it true that once your eyes have bulged and reach the " hop point " that they will STAY bulged if you have Graves? I am just getting fully diagnosed from the hyper so I have yet to learn if I have Graves or anything else.

YOU MENTION READING UP ON " MEDS TO REDUCE THE BULGING EYES " . IT IS NOT CLEAR TO ME IF YOU MEAN YOU HAVE READ THAT THERE ARE SUCH MEDS, OR YOU ARE WONDERING IF SUCH MEDICATION IS AVAILABLE. THE ONLY MEDICATION I AM AWARE OF THAT REDUCES THE BULGING AND/OR SWELLING IS ONE OF THE STEROID DRUGS. AND, BELIEVE ME, THEY ARE WELL WORTH STAYING AWAY FROM UNLESS YOU HAVE A SEVERE CASE. IF YOU HAVE COME UP WITH ANY INFO OTHER THEN THE USE OF STEROIDS, I'D BE INTERESTED IN KNOWING WHAT YOU DISCOVERED. THANKS. HELEN

HELEN Helen, I agree with you regarding the steroids thing, besides steroids not always help everybody's eyes. But I guess that what meant was the rol of antithyroid meds on bad eyes. And she's right. ATDs *indirectly* help eye disease by decreasing acting antibodies. Attention has to be kept for not going hypo, as hypothyroid stage contributes to water retention in the tissues, consequently puffiness of eyes will be probably increased. In addition, the elevation of TSH has been proved to worsen orbitopathy. Some information about this can be found at the atomicwomen's page (click on " eye disease and RAI " in the menu) http://www.suite101.com/myhome.cfm/atomicwomen
