Guest guest
So, after consulting my insurance's listing of endocrinologists and getting various wrong, disconnected, and busy numbers, I finally found a new endocrinologist. I had an appointment with him this afternoon and man, I sure lucked out! He actually listened to me, wrote down my entire history, answered all of my questions, and even mentioned various studies on hyperthyroidism and RAI, a treatment which he won't push on patients. He explained that the textbook way is to put " hypers " on meds for a year, then wait and if they don't stay in remission, to go to the RAI step. When he first started practicing, he apparently tried to follow this method, until he had a patient who preferred not to undergo RAI and was fine with staying on meds. He reconsidered the textbook approach and is perfectly fine with long-term PTU usage. He also recognized that I've been doing my own research and has said that I can gauge my dosage and symptoms, but if I feel the need to see him or have questions, that I can talk to or see him. He recognized that the endo I'd been seeing was not quite doing what he would do (after being on PTU for a year, she had me wait 6 months until I saw her again, whereas he felt that was at least 2 or 3 times too long). He also mentioned that his wife was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, so he's had close experience with her symptoms and treatment. Looks like I have a new endo! Just wanted to share, and if anyone is near Mountain View, CA, I can definitely recommend a great doctor in the area ...
