Anti-thyroid Medication/ Copper:Zinc Ratio??

Dear ,

What are the names of some anti-thyroid medication? I

have avoided Tapazol because of the warnings about

possible liver damage and osteoporosis. But I noticed

that you do recommend taking anti-thyroid meds until

the hyper symptoms have abated.

Also I am confused by your supplement list of the

ratio of copper:zinc. In answers to other questions

about taking zinc after the copper is built up, you

have said take equal portions of each. When do you

know if your copper has been built up to the point

where you start to take zinc in the first place? When

do you know to take equal measures of copper to zinc?

Thanks for your help!

Jan

Hi Jan and Everyone,

I don't like to use or recommend the use of drugs if they can be avoided.

However, in hyperthyroidism, you can have a thyroid storm and die. More

than likely, someone dies from this every day somewhere in the world. It's

very serious. I've been through these, " will I live or will I die " storms

and I lived because I have a strong heart, but not everyone makes it through.

That's why antithyroid drugs have a place: to keep you alive so you can

recover.

There is a danger from these drugs but generally the danger from the

drugs is less than the danger from not taking them when the hyperT is severe

or the person's health is not great. The danger to the liver is generally

from long-term use. Hopefully people who follow the supplement

recommendations will get better and not have to use the drugs for a long

time. Also, taking supplements should offer protection from the effects of

the drugs.

Tapazole is a brand name for a drug called methimazole. The other

commonly used drug is propylthiouracil or PTU. The drugs inhibit the

conversion of T4 to T3 and therefore have a very quick effect. I took PTU

for four days until I discovered I could control my hyper attacks with

cal/mag, but I found that I could feel the effect withing 30-60 minutes, so I

took it on an " as needed " basis.

If you are getting along without using antithyroid drugs, then you can

probably continue without them. That is definitely better. However, if

you're having thyroid storms, that's another story.

Concerning the copper/zinc ratio: You'll know your copper is getting

built up when you're not having thyroid storms, your heart rate is getting

down into the 80s or 70s, and you can exercise without rapid heart beat.

Once you get to this point, try increasing the zinc. If the symptoms

come back, decrease the zinc to the point where you can tolerate it.

Can any tell me how you know your heart rate? Do you do it by pulse and

if so, how may beats do you count and for how long? Is your wrist the

best place to detect it? I know it seems like a simple questions but

I've never done it before, even when I was doing arobics I didn't know

how to do the pulse rate. Thanks

katharine

I take my heart rate at the wrist. I count every beat for 15 seconds, and

multiply by 4. This will give you your beats per minute. Mine is at about

100 now, but I just recently weaned myself completely off of the Inderol

(beta blocker) I was on, with my endo's approval.

Dear Katharine,

You have several places where you can take your pulse rate, wrist, and neck

are the best.

You are better to take it for a whole minute as the ensure a correct count.

Hope this helps

Deborah,

No, my heart rate was down to about 88-90 while taking only one dose

per day. I actually am back down to 85 today, after being completely

off of the Inderol for 4 days. I think he wanted to get a better

idea of how my heart was doing while taking only the Tapazole. He

said my heart sounded great when I was in his office, and one dose of Inderol

really wasn't much-my body seemed to object for the first couple of days,

but I guess after being on it for 7 months, I had become slightly dependant

on it. Now that I have been on the Tapazole for 2 1/2 months, I am

feeling a lot better. My test results will be back in next week (

I hope), and we'll see what they show.

LIsa,

Why did you wean off the Indural? Did your doc think 100 was low

Katharine,

I take my pulse on my wrist for 15 seconds and times that number by 4.
