Hi.....I also have mitral value prolapse (MVP) but never told valves could

wear down. on a scale of 1-5 mine is 1.5. I only notice it when I'm

reallly stressed or lifting heavy weights (which I don't do anymore). You

sound a little down and just wanted to tell you that unless doc tells you

your case is serious you only need to worry about taking amoxicillin when

going to the dentist. It takes time for everything to work and for many of

us patience can be difficult.

Supplements can help but also state of mind is very important. You have

everyone's support and concern here, so you're not alone. It helps if you

can laugh a little, spend time with friends and family that make you feel

good, go to a funny movie. Make time for yourself. I don't know why we all

had to get this disease, I hate it but I have learned how great life is

even with problems. I always tell myself it could be a lot worse! I'm not

preaching just want to help you feel better about yourself. Take care, Mona

Re: Graves + Paxil

My eyes are okay, I guess. They have always been big, so it is hard to

tell sometimes.

I am worried about my heart. I had an ultrasound and it showed some

reguritation of my tricuspid and mitral. The mitral was more that the

tricuspid. Nothing has worked too much for me. I am not getting worse,

but no better on the supplements. I guess the heart thing is new since

Feb. It isn't bad now, but down the road , it could wear the valves out

if it isn't checked, I suppose. Oh well.

I was officially diagnosed with MVP about 6-7 years ago, diagnosed with

Graves 4 years ago. MVP is supposed to be more prevalent in women! This

would be an interesting study for researchers to track. Mona

Re: Graves + Paxil

Hello Deb,

It is interesting that I've noticed that a few people in the group who have

thyroid problems ended up having mitral valve prolapse with mitral

reguirgitation. I was diagnostic as have MVP w/MR in January and February.

This was news to me. I really thought it might be inherited cuz my father

had that and he had a mitral valve tear repaired about 3 years ago. Now it

appears that one by one have come forward telling us that they were just

recently having MVP along with Thyroid problems. I wondered if this is a

big

connection between thyroid and MVP???? What do you think??? ???

Kozy,

Do you know what the symptoms of MVP are? I have been feeling strange and

wondering if I need my heart checked?

Kathleen,

Well... I hadn't noticed any symptoms for my MVP..... until I went to a new

doctor and got a physical. He listened to my heart thru the stethoscope in

his office and noticed that I did have a heart murmur. So he ordered an

cardioechogram and they found that I have MVP with Mitral reguirgitation in

the left bottom side. I do feel my heart palpating sometimes... so I don't

really know. You can look up symptoms of MVP in the AOL health section of

conditions and treatment. Hope this helps.

MVP presents a feeling of a heart stopping, rolling over, then starting

again with a HARD thump. There's also a moment of rapid heart beats. I

don't know what anyone else feels but this is my experience. It's barely

noticeable. On a scale of 1 - 5 mine is 1.5 - doc wanted to put me on

Inderal (betablocker) - I did for a while, thought it was stupid and

discontinued. No problems, just premedicate before dentist.

Mona,

This is exactly what I feel sometimes!!!! I hate the feeling but it makes

me nervous and wonder if I will get an heart attack. Is it safe to do some

exercise while feeling that way?? Whenever, I go walking.... I would feel

that once or twice...I'm afraid to pass out from it. Do you still exercise

when you still feel that way??

Hi Kozy,

I worried about the exercise too but I actually notice it more when I'm

relaxed or very excited or stressed about something. I seem to go in

stages.....I will notice it alot then not at all for a while.

I have noticed it during a run so just slowed down and let it pass. I

notice it more often when I lifted weights or worked out in the gym. That

was the reason I went to the doctor. The rhythm gets thrown off I guess

then readjusts itself...haven't heard anything about a heart attack. I'm

more concerned about getting an infection around the heart due to dental

work. By the way, I had a friend who kept complaining her heart

hurt...according to an article in a magazine this is indicative of an

infection in the lining of the heart. When I told her this she ran to the

doc and they immediately put her on antibiotics!

When it happens and it's strong, it feels like the heart is stopping or

pounding very hard and I usually cough a few times, then it reaadjusts.

gotta go, server down, Mona

Yes, that's the weird part. The irregular pounding and skipped beats

usually happen when I'm totally relaxed. I take a very deep breath

and exhale, and repeat this several times, and it evens itself out.

Has any dentist ever explained WHY the antibiotics are needed to

prevent an infection in the heart from dental work? Aren't

these germs in your mouth, or under your gums with access to your

bloodstream, all the time anyway?

Wouldn't you think that any infection you get--such as an upper

respiratory infection--would pose a threat to your heart if you have

been diagnosed with MVP?

Why aren't we on antibiotics all the time? And doesn't that

stimulate the immune system, helping to create more auto-antibodies

in

autoimmune diseases?

Wanna play 20 questions or what?........... Is there a dentist in

the

house?

I'll shut up now - Have a great Friday!

My dentist told me anytime blood is exposed in the mouth is a cause for

antibiotics. Well, I know if I get lazy and don't floss for a few days the

gums bleed, then what? Actually, the story I heard some time ago was that

when the blood is regurgiated (flows backwards) it carries the bad blood

that can cause infection. Funny, I had dental work for years without

premeds then suddently MVP was found and I have to take meds. I have

cheated a few times......

Maybe it's just because some of us are getting older? Or because we have an

autoimmune disease could this cause a great risk? In any case, I don't take

chances with big dental work - I take the meds. If I noticed a fever or

illness shortly after a dental visit I'd RUN to the nearest doc to play it

safe....we only have one heart!

I agree we take too many antibiotics! It's in poultry and meat, eggs....no

wonder we're building a resistance to the drugs....they're handed out like

candy!! Does anyone have any answers other than grow your own veges,

poultry and beef?

I visited friends in Alton, Missouri (a very little town) that raise their

own poultry and beef. The hormone free meat tastes very different from

store bought. Even veges taste different. Mona

This was an interesting article with more information on MVP, just something

I found, if interested!
