Wow.

That's almost as bad as and Barbara Bush and their dog all getting a

autoimmune disease back when he was president.

That kind of thing sort of points to an environmental factor.

Speaking of environment, I think the rest of the group is at ithyroid.com.

I haven't gotten used to that yet.

Hi there, I read that tapazol at least stays in the body for 10 days

after stopping. Obviously it gets watered down to being no use at

all by day 10. Where is your TSH these days? I wonder because

you felt symptoms come back right away. Other than that, I don't

think it makes a hout of a difference. Your body will decide

remission not the medication. I use to imagine that the tapazol was

holding the TSH still until the body got the message. But I really

think that the body will go back into kilter and then remission. I

figure this because of the acupuncture and chinese herbs must do

something that Western medication does not. And why would

supplements help if it were only a thyroid problem? There are lots

of questions. See ya at ithyroid. Swan PS. Sorry to hear about

the cat being ill. There is a site for hyperthyroid cats at egroups.

Hi , I swear you are going to have to get better just so you

aren't aggravated by the numbering system: norm 0.3-5.0 (differs

by lab) Low is OVER 5.0 and hyper is UNDER .5 or whatever.

Yep. Just keep eyeballing those whole numbers. You'll get there.

I went to 15 at one time for a couple of weeks and was bruising

myself, couldn't lift my legs or drive. But off of the meds I went to

..02 in 1 month. That was zooming and my eyes were effected by

all that a bit. My eyes are almost OK now and it's been remission

since Sept 99. Swan

Hi,

I have gone from hyper to hypo and back. I was given RAI in March of

this year. I went through a terrible time with no warning - I had been

on paxil and was taken off. I had taken propranalol and was taken off.

And something somewhere went crazy. I couldn't sleep. I was extremely

anxious. My endo was out of town and my GP didn't know what to do. In

the end the weird part passed. I don't know if it was withdrawal or

adjusting to having no thyroid or what. In mid April I was put on

levothyroxine and now I'm much better. I go to my endo tomorrow. At

the moment I am hyper again from the replacement T4 and am not minding.

I normally weigh 100 lbs and from last October to now I went up to 135

lbs. A large gain. No reason given by any doctor. But I am losing a

bit right now. Have tried to cut down carbohydrate. But the weight

gain is the worst of my symptoms so I guess I should be happy. Can't do

stairs yet - my legs feel as if they had 20 lb weights on them.

Hi Norma,

Interesting that your cat has hyperthyroidism also. There is a study showing

a relationship between cat hyperthyroidism and eating canned food. Do you

feed your cat canned food?

That's sounds normal what you went through. Even after surgery

removal, the drop of hormone will lay a person out. It takes time

but I think you'll be fine. I have met plenty of people whose weight

is just fine after RAI. Yes, 35 lbs is alot. Still, I think you can lose

it by getting out of bed and not eating all day but just eating a

couple of great meals, and walking if nothing else. Talk later, lOve

Hi Debby,

The optomitrist says not but doesn't understand hy I now have

astigmatism. I have major puffiness around my eyes but had that before

RAI. I heeded new lenses for my glasses after four years of no change.

I had to have drops in my eyes so he could examine the back of my eyes.

One would not dilate after two tries so he gave up on it.

Nothing too scary anyway at this time. How about you?

Thanks for the encouragment. I am extremely active physically. I was

working out 5 times a week but my endo has said not to. I teach

canoeing and do a lot of whitewater and wilderness canoeing so I feel

that I am fairly active. I have garden in our whole yard - I don't cut

grass if I can help it. But again that's very demanding physically. I

think my weight may have stabilized where it is but I am not sure and

really hate it so much. Funny the things we like/hate the most.

Hi ....I've been on PTU for over 3 years and meds have been reduced to

1/2 day/day. I went hypo last summer so my meds have been meds have been

reduced slowly. May be going into remission. HOwever, I've heard we can go

in and out of remission. This next blood test will tell if I'm holding

steady. Is the .07 the T4 or TSH? Mona

Hi Swan....sounds like your eyes are affected by your levels too. Lots of

docs don't agree. When I was taken off PTU seveal years ago my eyes bulged

for over 4 months - it took a year and a half for my eyes to return to

normal. I'm having pressure and " movement " in my head and around my eyes

now but it's intermittent - more an irritant. ARe you eyes in remission or

your TSH? MOna

Yes, I did get in that bad habit of canned food - I wish I would have

never started. It's hard to break them once they've started. I have

two - both 15 year old.

HI ......TSH is the thyroid simulating hormone, Can't remember what T4

is. I just know if T3/T4 is too low then you're hypo (too high = hyper).

range for TSH is .5 - 5.5 (if too low then hyper, if too high then hypo).

Someone on the BB can probably give you a quicker answer to definitions of

each hormone, take care, Mona

Hello Deb,

It is interesting that I've noticed that a few people in the group who have

thyroid problems ended up having mitral valve prolapse with mitral

reguirgitation. I was diagnostic as have MVP w/MR in January and February.

This was news to me. I really thought it might be inherited cuz my father

had that and he had a mitral valve tear repaired about 3 years ago. Now it

appears that one by one have come forward telling us that they were just

recently having MVP along with Thyroid problems. I wondered if this is a big

connection between thyroid and MVP???? What do you think??? ???

My eyes are okay, I guess. They have always been big, so it is hard to

tell sometimes.

I am worried about my heart. I had an ultrasound and it showed some

reguritation of my tricuspid and mitral. The mitral was more that the

tricuspid. Nothing has worked too much for me. I am not getting worse,

but no better on the supplements. I guess the heart thing is new since

Feb. It isn't bad now, but down the road , it could wear the valves out

if it isn't checked, I suppose. Oh well.

Hi Norma,

I don't know of any effects of Paxil on hyperT. I looked up Paxil and

selenium and found no studies, so I don't know what's happening there either.

I don't believe there is any problem from skipping doses of PTU other

than the return of hyper symptoms. PTU interferes with the conversion of T4

to T3 so you just wind up with more T3 and hyper feelings. These, of course,

could get serious with continued nonuse of PTU.

If you want to keep your animals (and yourself) healthy feed them fresh raw

meat. We are able to buy the ground meat waste products at a grocery store

for $.69 a pound and our animals are so healthy it's incredible. Canned

meats seem to contain some heavy metal (probably cadmium) that affects the

thyroid and also the estrogen mimic bisphenol-A which accelerates the

accumulation of the heavy metal.

Hi Deb,

Let me know what supplements, and how much of each, that you're taking and

maybe I can figure out what to adjust to get you better.

Hi Kozy,

We talked a little about this before. I'm pretty sure that the MVP is a

result of copper deficiency. Copper is essential for forming collagen which

forms the structure of all the body, including the heart. Copper deficiency,

gray hair, and thyroid problems are all connected. I had been diagnosed with

a leaky mitral valve in the past and could feel some heart problems. I no

longer feel those problems but haven't been to a doctor to see if they are no

longer detectable.
