Guest guest
Hi Elaine, exactly what is this disease...never heard of it. Also a friend of mine just had a thyroid panel and her T4 was below normal - TSH and T3 in were in normal range. Would she be considered hypo? Hope all is well with you, Mona Re: keratoconus Hi, My daughter also has this. After being treated incorrectly and misdiagnosed by a number of docs in Colorado and NYC, she finally found an ophthalmologist at the University of Chicago who diagnosed and initially treated her. This doc said that hard contacts are required to stabilize the condition. Otherwise, the disease could progress to where a corneal transplant is required. This was 4 years ago and the doc was right. My daughter initially had a hard time getting used to the hard contacts but now she is stable and there are signs of improvement. Before the diagnosis she kept going through soft contacts becase the other docs couldn't assess her vision properly with regular instruments. She also would get eye pain so severe she had to pull off the road. Having a proper diagnosis early on should really benefit your friend's son. I'm not sure if it helped but I also had my daughter take lots of lutein, eyebright, mixed carotenoids, zinc and other eye nutrients. Guest guest
thanks elaine!! Re: keratoconus It's a thinning of the cornea that causes eye muscle instability and may lead to complete corneal erosion. I've checked with several ophthalmologists and they all insist it has no relationship to GD. Your friend may be in the very early stages of hypothyroidism, and the TSH hasn't yet begun to rise. They might want to get their levels rechecked in 6 weeks. This would be the most common cause. Other causes are of course lab error, medications that interfere with either the TSH or T4, and pituitary problems along with hypoT.
Guest guest
Hi Marilyn, Yes, your zinc relative to your copper is too high. For normal people, and 8:1 zinc to copper ratio is recommended, and that's what you'll find in most vitamins. But since hyperthyroidism is associated (and perhaps triggered by) low copper and excess zinc, you want to strive for about a 3:1 zinc/ coper ratio. More like 16 mg copper for 50 mg zinc. Also, make sure you're not getting too much dietary iodine. Many people have seen improvement with a few dietary changes like adding goitrogens and cutting out sugar, saturated fats, caffeine, dairy and wheat. I also have 4 friends whose symptoms totally vanished when they eliminated aspartame.

Now that's interesting, but certainly not surprising! http://webhome.idirect.com/~wolfnowl/aspartame.htm for anyone who's interested...
