Guest guest
Dear Sherry: Thank you for your detailed information. Could I ask a few questions? 1) How much water to use to desolve the epson salt and baking soda and how much epson sale and baking soda should we use? 2) Would allergy eye drops affect the medication that we are taking, like Tapazole? 3)Should we go see an eye doctor? Inside of my eyes are red and my right eyelid is kind of puffy - I thought it was allergic to the make-up because it is sometimes a littly itchy. Thanks again. Guest guest
Dear Elaine: Did you take tapazol to control the hyperthyroid before in remission? Thanks Pam
Guest guest
Dear Elaine: Thank you very much for your prompt response. I think I better go see an eye doctor just to make sure my eyes are ok. I have Glaucoma on the left eye and not seeing much out of it . I'm using eyedrop on this eye for treatment which gives me redeye. I only have one good eye left. I'm wearing soft contact len on the right eye which sometimes gives me the red eye as well. I've been trying new eyeshadows and don't know if my swollen eyelid is because I'm allergic to the makeup. I can see fine so far. Do you think if the tapazol controls the hyperthyroid fine, the eyes would be ok as well? Thank you. Pam
Guest guest
Itchy, swollen, red eyes are always a problem that should be checked by an ophthalmologist. I saw one every six months and was told to return if there were any distinct changes at any time during his care. Eventually, I did suffer from full-blown TED, dealing with double vision. Eyes are not to be ignored when dealing with thyroid problems. To correct the double vision I did undergo orbital radiation and short-term prednisone treatment. My Graves is now in remission, I have never undergone RAI, but I pay serious attention to anything involving my eyes. You are only given one set of eyes, they deserve attention. Elaine It is not these well-fed long-haired men that I fear, but the pale and the hungry-looking. --Julius Caesar Hello pamchou On Saturday, April 26, 2003, you wrote > Dear Sherry: > Thank you for your detailed information. > Could I ask a few questions? > 1) How much water to use to desolve the epson salt and baking soda and how much epson sale and baking soda should we use? > 2) Would allergy eye drops affect the medication that we are taking, like Tapazole? > 3)Should we go see an eye doctor? Guest guest
Yes. I suffered two bouts with Graves, the first in 1991 and there was no associated TED. At that time I took PTU and moved into remission in about a year or more. During this bout I was always hungry and lost weight. The second bout occurred in about 1999 and the TED actually was the first noticeable problem, followed by typical Graves distress (sweats, palpitations, muscle wasting, weakness, inability to sleep, etc). During this bout I was always hungry and gained weight <smile>. During this bout I started on PTU and eventually was switched to Tapazole. I weaned from very weak dosing with Tapazole last year (down to half a dose every few days before stopping). All doctors (with the interesting exception of an HMO caretaker doctor who authorized the specialists) pushed for RAI. I didn't want it. I think it is too often given with little thought about the eventual need for more consistent follow-up than is being given to the people who end up being hyPO after RAI. The orbital radiation of my eyes and the prednisone regimen did correct the double vision and for that I am extremely grateful. I also am aware that TED does not have to run concurrently with Graves and so I continue to carefully watch for any possible TED symptoms. I believe, but am not positive, that medical people do not think second attempts to use radiation are successful if there is a reoccurrence of TED. I am due for a physical in May. At that time all thyroid functions will again be tested and I will share here. I also will be scheduling an eye exam during May. I should mention that my family also suffers from allergies and arthritis, two other auto-immune problems, and that my endo associates all of these diseases, feeling that if you find one, you will more than likely find another among the " victims " . My husband died in 1991, precipitating the thyroid crisis; in 1999, not eligible for any other health insurance, I feared that my HMO would bankrupt and collapse leaving me without insurance coverage. Note that both crises precipitated Graves. That is not unusual. Guest guest
Pam, If I recall correctly, there is a fine line about ATDs and TED. I believe if the ATDs tip you toward hyPO it can heighten the TED problems. I hope someone here who might know more about that will give us more information. That is why I had very frequent checkups when using both PTU and Tapazole. I think I was tested at least monthly and more often if there appeared to be anything seriously out of sync. In the meantime, I will also check for more information about that possible connection. The endos heavily rely on our description of symptoms and our own monitoring. When I weaned, I was on verbalized " orders " from the doctor, though the prescriptions carried the usual dosage, and if I felt poorly or exhibited certain symptoms, I increased dosage, if I went the other way I decreased dosage, all per his instructions. As for eye makeup, it is entirely possible you are suffering from an allergy. Perhaps not use it for awhile, give it a week, and see if symptoms lessen. For those suffering from shadows beneath their eyes, that is a very common side effect of allergies, and very prominent among people in the area where I live during the height of the allergy season. Guest guest
Just another bit of info re dark circles--it seems lots of us have them, I wonder if anyone's are as dark as mine, without makeup I look look like a racoon. I was reading an article in Health magazine about mothers and daughters and inherited beauty problems. One family had all generations w/dark circles (my family has them, too). The solution they gave (which involves a visit to a dermotologist), was to combine Renova and some kind of bleaching cream used nightly. I have no idea if this works, but they claim it did. I had them at birth, and wonder if anyone else here had them at birth too, and, if so, if there is anything that can be done. Guest guest
I also had dark circles at birth. Looking at baby pictures when I was a few months old you can see the circles, both dark and the half moon look that you see with someone who uses glasses alot. I think the type of anemia from parents born in Mediterrean countries, I forget the name of that type of anemia, thassia....... something, can give you dark circles also. Guest guest
I just wanted to add I also come from a family of women with dark circles. Avon's Lighten Up works. You do need to use it twice daily. It won't completely eliminate the problem but it will make a major difference. Sandy
Guest guest
Hi, Wanted to mention that dark circles are frequently a sign of allergies. And those of us with thinner under eye skin are more likely to have noticeable dark circles. My circles improve when I have enough sleep, drink enough water and avoid allergens, particularly wheat in my case.
