Dear Jan,

I know you were referring your question to . The info I have on the

subject, maybe I have been " struggling " with whether or not an autoimmune

person can take " immune inhancers " . I read the post on echinachea

recommended and thought it had great merit and shared it with another group.

A woman with Lupus responded with her own set of scientific principles for

autoimmune people to stay away from echinachea at all costs. Both had valid

points.

The Interesting thing about Astralagus is that in some herb books it it

specifically used to decrease over active immune systems, specifically in

thyroid situations. Yet it can inhance a sluggish system. Some theorize

that all immune system herbs do this, but I've never seen it specifically

stated as I do astralagus by any books or herbalists on the web.

It also grows easily in the garden and has large roots. You can easily

grow two crops of them in a season in Northern Wisconsin. You use the root,

but the veggie tastes like asparagus and is much easier to grow than

asparagus.

I'm sure may have other good info to add to this.

I've decided to limit my exposure to immune system builders to astralagus

because it has been specifically described as an herb to reduce

I know about Astragalus as my naturopath put me on it in 1991 when she and

M.D.'s were trying to figure out what was making me ill. thyroid tests

were normal but to the naturopath the thyroid was low functioning. SHe

used the astragalus to build up the immune system, as I was very low

functioning in general. It worked beautifully.

What Astragalus did for me was build up the immune sysem. Mine had been

compromised and I was, well, I was in very bad shape. It took six months,

but it worked.

Since you are the guru in the group on supplements, I

have a question. I am HT with Grave's and go to an

acupuncturist who recommended that I use an immunity

enhancer called Astragalus. She gave me a copy of an

article entitled " Astragalus: Immunity Enhancer " from

Have you heard of this root? Do you know anything

about its effects?

Thanks, Jan >>

Hi Jan,

My knowledge of herbs is very limited, so I looked up astragalus in

Rector Page's book, Healthy Healing. On page 74 she states, " Astragalus--an

herbal immune stimulant and body tonic, that enhances adrenal function.

Vasodilating properties lower blood pressuure, increase metabolism and

improve circulation. "

What concerns me are " immune stimulant " and " increase metabolism. "

Generally anything which stimulates the immune system or increases metabolism

increases the symptoms of hyperthyroidism. On the other hand, she lists it

as an antioxidant and in general antioxidants improve hyperT.

I have never taken astragalus or know of anyone with hyperT who has tried

it. I personally wouldn't recommend it, but if you do try it, take small

amounts, be cautious, and report back to the group.

As I mentioned before, I am HYPO and have tried it and it helped rebuild a

very failing thyroid situation, but not like 's supplements. I think

my naturopath thought I was cancer bound, and maybe I was, for all I know.

So, I would listen to 's sound advice. If you are HYPER, it make rev

up the metabolism more.

I, too, tried Astragalus, in combination with a couple of other herbals, in

response to a severely immune-compromised health crisis I was in several

years ago. It was helpful. I am borderline hypO.
