This inquiry is addressed primarily to women. I have been plagued for years

w/chronic yeast infections " down there " (pardon the indelicacy), for which I

have tried everything: Western medicine, diet, supplements, acupuncture,

herbs, etc. I'm sure I have this problem because I was on antibiotics for

years in my 20s due to chronic bronchitis and urinary tract infections

(another wonderful side effect of Western medicines). Anyway, I used to have

systemic candida, but that is now under control; the yeast just stays in one

place and won't go away for long, no matter what treatment I use. Does

anyone else have this problem, and does anyone have any solutions?

Thanks in advance for any info,

AntJoan

Dear AntJoan,

I don't have the solution, I was diagnosed with candida infection in my

blood. Feeling better, but no new tests done; I am using capryl

(spelling) Lopacho tea (spelling) oregano, olive leaf. I went thru a

course of nystatin, expecting to feel ill from dead yeast organisms being

dumped, but didn't notice anything. I send this to you just on the off

chance that you hadn't tried one of the above. I am allergic to garlic, so

I leave it out. Also I have sporadically taken various forms of

concentrated acidophilis. Anxious to see yours and others suggestions.

According to Dr Stoll, yeast/leaky gut syndrome, and other aspects of yeast

infections can only be temporarily taken care of until the entire system is

balanced and de stressed, so keep up the skilled relaxation (I haven't

followed my own advice for a while on that subject, so if I still have yeast

after doing S.R. in addition to the above, then I will really get to work on

it, but for now the occasional sweet gets me off my plan)

Hi - A friend of a friend had that same problem. I know she solved it

entirely by reading up about it and how it has to do with her diet. For her

she had to keep away from a lot of food that had things like yeast, vinegar,

sugar, etc. If you want I can try to find out the book she read. I think

it was at and Noble in the female section. Good Luck! --- most

doctors don't have a clue about this sort of thing.. Although I would think

an allergist might. Elaine

Dear S,

Thanks! Your advice is great. I know about yeast, have read the book, etc.,

but what you said was very specific and helpful. I took that pill before

years ago, and it did work, but then the yeast came back. I even got the

Nystatin cream, which I used " down there, " but not suppositories, which would

be better. No one, however, knew where to order the suppositories, e.g., my

doctor, or my OB/GYN. I guess I'll try again to get them. Yogurt seems to

upset my stomach, but I do take acidopholis capsules--do you think they can

do the trick, or should I try to eat the yogurt?

Thanks again,

AntJoan

There is a book called the Yeast connection that I readI got it from the

allergist that said I had candida (chronic yeast infections)

Candida is a bacteria that feed on starches sugars preservitives artificial

sugars caffine bleached or processed anything. When we take antibiotics we

kill the natural good bacteria in our systems and the candida bacteria grows

much faster than the good and kills off the good because of it numbers, now

if you were to reverse the numbers and have the good bacteria kill of the

bad that would be the idea situation and it can be accomplished.

You would first take diflucan a one dose pill I am NOT sure of the spelling,

which would be prescribed by your OBGYn doctor, then if you can find a

allergist who would prescribe nystatin suppositories that you would place

down there would be the next step. This will promote the

good bacteria to kill of the candida. All while you do this stay off

sugar, artificial sugar all the things stated above. You would then eat if

you can as much yougart with LIVE ACTIVE cultures. Eat lots of fresh

vegetables on only fresh meat that has no preservitives for at least for two

weeks. You then can add fresh fruites to your diet (NO CANNED) if you must

eat some thing that is pre-prepared use frozen vegetables.

I had this problem and after about a month of strictly staying on the diet

and taking the nystatin pills and suppositories it completely cleared up and

I haven't had a down there infection now for a least 5 years.

Good Luck

AntJoan,

It would be good for you to do both acidopholis capsules and yogurt at the

same time. I only know of one doctor that prescribes the suppositories and

his name is Dr.Tipu Sultan He is in St.Louis Mo.

His address is: 11585 W. Florissant, Mo. I am not sure of the zip code Phone

number is: 314-921-5600

I have used bori acid mixed with a bit of water and swabbed that area

thoroughly. Worked beautifully. This advice from my naturopath.

Another thing to try is the Candida cleanse regimens to be purchased at

Dear Joyce,

How much boric acid did you use? Did you swab just the " outside, " or go

" inside " as well? What did you use to put in on you? How often did you use

it?

Thanks,

Just got my computer out of the repair shop.

I first want to thank you for your replies to me and everyone. I appreciate

you and enjoy your email .

Back to the problem. This may be too simple an answer but

You know there are some powerful oral meds for that.

The trick is getting the doctor to let you take it for about 2 weeks to get

it really cleared up.

Deflucan is one of the medications. What did you take before?

Don't know if it has any effect on one's thyroid. It might.

Possibly your mate should be treated also.

It would probably take an alternative doctor.

That's my best guess. Tell me if you find an answer.

Good luck,

Dear Ann,

Thank you very much for your reply. I have tried Diflucin, but was

prescribed just one pill--it's supposed to be a one-shot cure. I've never

heard of taking it for 2 weeks, though that's an interesting idea. The pill

can damage the liver, however, so I don't know if it would be good to take

more than one in any 6-month period or so. As for what else I've tried--I

guess I've tried just about everything! I may have to do a real strict diet

thing for a while (no yeast products, sugar, coffee, etc.), and take

Probiotics to replenish the good bacteria--the one thing I haven't tried (and

don't want to--my diet is pretty healthy, but I do allow myself some coffee,

" healthy " desserts, etc.).

Take care,

I had horrible sinus infections and practically lived on antibiotics for 20

years.

An alternative doc had me take diflucin for 2 weeks and it absolutely cure

it. I haven't had a problem since and had no ill effects. That was at least

Just a thought that maybe

A tough case, wherever it is, might take a longer course to cure.

Also read that oregano oil is good but it is horrible stuff. Costs a lot and

smells and burns.

Good luck,

If you find patches on the body that are sort of reddish, but boric acid

diluted with water on them, and ALSO on any found on your spouse/partner.

Forgot to add that a few weeks ago when commenting on this topic.

Be careful with Diflucan, I took it for 4 days and went to the ER room with a

bad reaction to it. In the past, I had the same dose with no reaction to

it...I am so ultra sensitive, so I am afraid of most meds now because of

Graves and all my bad reactions. Take care, Sheri Lynn

Dear Ann,

I also had horrible sinus infections for years, and before that I had

bronchitis for years, and before that, I had urinary tract infections for

years (caused by the diaphragm, which I found out after using it for over 10

years)--so lots of antibiotics. I'm going to ask my dr. about the longer

course of Diflucan---intertesting idea. Also, about oil of oregano--my

husband puts it in capsules and swallows it for some other condition, so we

have it in the house. Are you suggesting using it " down there, " (in which

case, how do you do that?), or swallowing it, as my husband does?

Hi,

I'll look in the PDR

>>

Out of a 1993 PDR

" The daily dose of diflucan should be based on the infecting organism and the

patient's response to therapy. Treatment should be continued until clinical

parameters or laboratory tests indicate that active fungal infection has

subsided. An inadequate period of treatment may lead to recurrence of active

infection. The recommended dosage of diflucan for oropharyngeal candidiasis

is 200 mg on the first day, followed by 100 mg once daily. Clinical evidence

of oropharyngeal candidiasis generally resolves within several days, but

treatment should be continued for at least 2 weeks to decease the likelihood

of relapse.

The recommended dosage of diflucan for esophageal candidiasis is 200 mg on

the first day, followed by 100 mg once daily. Doses up to 400mg/day may be

used, based of medical judgment of the patient's response to therapy.

Patients with esophageal candidiasis should be treated for a minimum of three

weeks and for at least two weeks following resolution of symptoms.

For systemic candidiasis, the recommended dosage of diflucan is 400 mg on the

first day, followed by 200 mg once daily. These patients should be treated

for a minimum of 4 weeks and for at least 2 weeks following resolution of

symptoms. "

There is lots to read about it in the PDR. It makes you afraid to take it.

Glad I took it before I read about it.

As for the oregano, I know very little. It probably would be too strong to

use down there. I found it too strong to use orally even at a few drops in a

glass of water. That's a great idea putting it in a capsule. I'm curious

what he takes it for?

For " downthere " I used to use old vinegar douches till it cleared up.

A fever blister starter the other day and I put a tiny amount on my lip and

the blister stopped and didn't develop. I was impressed.

Good luck,

Ann

Dear Ann,

That's really interesting about the Diflucan; when they prescribe it to you

now, they only give you one pill. In fact, it's advertised on TV as the " one

dose yeast cure. " I took it a few times--one pill each time. Maybe they

found it too strong/dangerous to take more than that. Anyway, my infection

did come back, so what you say about taking it for 2 weeks make sense. I

wonder why they changed it? Does anyone have a more recent PDR to see what

dosage is recommended? Are there any physicians on the board who might have

experience w/this drug, and know if taking it for longer than one day is

dangerous?

As for the oil of oregano (which my husband also found vile--he puts it into

pill capsules that he either purchases empty, or else he empties out capsules

of stuff he no longer takes), my husband went to Dr. Atkins for

Crohn's disease, an inflammation of the small intestine. I don't know if the

oil of oregano was for candida, or for the inflammation--he takes about 30

different supplements each day, a few times a day.

Take care,

Hi,

It's Ann again.

I'll drag out my newest PDR, a 1998 version.

" Diflucan (fluconaazole) is the first of a new subclass of synthetic triazole

antifungal agents. "

Then there are 2 1/2 pages of information warning, studies, etc.

On page 2178 of the 1998 PDR

" Vaginal candidiasis...150 mg as a single oral dose. "

but that is just for vaginal candidiasis

it goes on

" Diflucan for oropharyngeal candidiasis is 200 mg on the first day, followed

by 100 mg once daily. Clinical evidence of oropharyngeal candidiasis

generally resolver within several days, but treatment should be continued for

at least 2 weeks to decrease the likelihood of relapse. "

The new PDR has more study and more details but the dosages are about the

same. I'll continue a ways to be sure:

" Esophageal candidiasis: The recommended dosage of diflucan for esophageal

candidiasis is 200 mg on the first day, followed by 100 mg once daily. Doses

up to 400 mg/day may be used etc. etc.

should be treated for a minimum of three weeks and for at least two weeks

following resolution of symptoms. "

They really haven't changed it...it's just being advertised as a once and

done thing for easy to cure vaginal candidiasis. It might not work for a

resistant or chronic problem.

Has it worked? What do you think of Dr. Atkins treatments?

There are so many places you could go

and you never know what would be best

and you can't afford to try them all.

It's good to hear from someone with first hand experiences with a big one

like the Atkins center.

The PDR could make a glass of water look lethal - take it with a grain of

salt. I was prescribed Diflucan after chronic yeast problems similar to those

you have described and it finally broke the cycle after I had been struggling

for months.

Dear Ann,

My husband, who did not want to go to a complementary physician, eventually

agreed to go when his Crohn's had progessed to the point where he was

disabled and the drs. were pushing surgery. After 2 weeks on the Atkins

program, he was off Prednisone (which usually is almost impossible to get off

of in these cases)--he soon regained his health, and was fine (and med-free)

for 8 years. After we went to Mexico about 3 years ago, however, we both

picked up a " bug. " I was fine after one day, but he still has not regained

the health he had for those 8 years. He's much better than he was before the

Atkins treatment, but, even w/all his supplements (he takes about 80/day), he

still has to take some Prednisone.

Tha Atkins Center is very large, expensive, and impersonal, and Atkins

himself is arrogant and difficult, but his protocol for Crohn's is very

successful. I just wish my husband could get back to where he was for those

8 years--I think now he should try acupuncture, herbs, meditation, etc., but

he's very resistant.

The reaction I had was a feeling of being just very ill. Like you would feel

on cortisone pills if taken in quanity...just sick. I guess you could say

like a chemical reaction. I learned there is a test that -Cline lab can

do, it is an anti-candida antibody blood test that will show an increase of

the anibody in the blood stream that fights candida to be high indicating

overgrowth. I am going to talk to the allergist about getting this test

done. I feel it makes sense to see if medication is necessary first. Many

women have hyper sensitivity to yeast in their body even if it is within

normal ranges; thus, the itching etc., but not an infection. Sheri Lynn
