Dear Ant Joan,

Thanks for your speedy reply and answer. Did you take any other vitamins,

minerals, herbs, and if so and in what doses? Did you try copper or anything

else that recommends?

I have multiple severe health problems and mutiple allergies, but I am

taking copper and PABA and some of the B vitamins. They have helped but

only to a point. I think the problem with me is all the persistent viruses

I have and until I can get rid of them, I may not be able to push through to

any better level. I probably will have to bite the bullet and take the

antivirals to get rid of the creepy viruses.

Interestingly, I tried acupuncture many years ago and it made me worse. I

went to who was supposed to be the best in the city, so his knowledge wasnt

the problem, I guess. I have also tried doses of the beta blockers (many

different ones) but they dont really help me either. The only thing that

has truly helped was long term prednisone, but I really dont want to do that

again. I may also have to try the Tapezole.

Regards,

Sue

Dear Sue,

Nice to hear from you. The first thing I did when I discovered I was

hyperthyroid was to look at any new supplements I had recently added to my

regimen. I was using ProGest cream (which I found out stimulates the

thyroid), and stopped that for a while (I use it again now). I also was

taking some multivitamins I got for free when I bought some Nordic Track

equipment, which promised to " speed up the metabolism. " Needless to say, I

discontinued those as well. I got acupuncture, and ate more broccoli and

tofu, which the Chinese acupuncturist advised me to eat, as it slows the

thyroid. I also took very low doses of Atenol and Tapezol (5 or 10 mg. or

so). As soon as I started to feel heavier, I began cutting the doses of

Tapezol, eventually tapering off to nothing a few months later.

If there's anything else you'd like to know, please write back.

AntJoan

Dear Sue,

I basically take the vitamins/supplements I was taking before started

all this; they may support my health, but I don't think they were key in my

recovery. I started taking the copper, but I felt like I was gaining weight

so I stopped. If I ever start to get hyper again, however, I will take it

again. I take herbs from my acupuncturist, which I think help to balance my

system. I think with long-term Prednisone use your system might be out of

balance, and it might take time to rebalance yourself. I guess it might take

experimenting w/the various supplements and w/diet to find what's right for

you. has lots of good information--hopefully you will be able to arrive

at the right combination.

I know you asked me exactly what I take, and I am not trying to be evasive.

When I got sick, I thought long and hard about what I had been taking prior

to the onset of hyperT, and used that information, along w/an intuition about

what felt right for my body, to guide myself to recovery. I think that for

all of us it's an individual process, which involves being closely in tune

with our bodies. I can tell when something has changed with me by the way I

feel, and no doctor can know better than I do. When I started to feel that I

was heavier and wanted to cut back on the Tapezol, the doctor told me it

wasn't so. I insisted on a blood test, which revealed that my thyroid

hormones were almost in the hypo range. He then had to agree, and started

tapering me off the Tapezol, which brought the hormones into the normal

range. If your problems are more complex than just the hyperT (you mentioned

viruses, etc.), then the healing process also will be complex. Maybe the

acupuncture made you worse because you were detoxing, and had to feel worse

before you felt better (I don't know what actually happened, so this is just

speculation). Please let me know how you are doing.

AntJoan

Hello !

You said:

> Interestingly, I tried acupuncture many years ago and it made me worse. <

There is a theory amongst nutritionists, herbalists, those that practice

Iridology, and the alternative healing field in general, etc., that states: Once

healing begins, you actually go 'back in time' through your health history and

'suffer' mini versions of what you previously suffered. This embraces the

saying: You will get worse before you get better. I believe the theory is based

on the body cleansing itself of whatever it was that ailed you at a particular

time/event. They likely have a term for it, and if they do, I've forgotten the

term. This is also a poorly worded description of their theory. However, I

believe in it as I have witnessed myself with my own recoveries so can attest to

its validity.

I bring this to your attention in regards to your previous experience with

acupuncture. You may have simply been healing and may have gotten worse before

you got better.

That's my 2 cents worth for today.

Dear ,

I call myself AntJoan because my darling nephew was the one who set me up

when I went on AOL. When I told him I wanted a catchy name for on-line

purposes, he said, " You're Aunt Joan. " He told me to use " Ant " because I

would have a better chance of getting the name, but said even so I would have

to be " AntJoan125 " or something. However, when I asked for the name, I

didn't need a number, I seemed to be the only one.

When I got on this list, there was another Joan, who signed her posts " Joan, "

so I wanted to avoid confusion, so always used AntJoan. Now it's gotten to

be a habit--plus, I never know if she'll come back.

When anyone asks for my e-mail address and I tell them the story of how I got

the name, even if they forget to write it down, they don't forget it.

So now you know why I'm,

AntJoan
